HonestLy, the way it's run, if I wasn't a Port fan (rather than an AFL fan ) I'd give it the flick. The lack of integrity that becomes public puts a huge question mark on everything. The biased umpiring, the ridiculous fixture, the Easendon and Melbourne bullshit cover ups, the way that players are protected from the press and the police, the whole lot stinks to high heaven.

Thankfully come the bounce I am able to pretend that none of that stuff matters and can enjoy watching my club play, but looking at it from the outside in I'm an idiot for spending so much time and money on something so corrupt.
The "look after the homies" policy just sh**s me..

Luke Hodge ....slamming wingards head was just about my tipping point...but alas I love the game and more importantly the club too much...

Watching the footy shows ...footy commentators...ex players and current players in the media....that dumb f*** robbo ...gillion ...rompingwins....its a cult to rival the illuminati....

All the while gerrad whately seems always on the outter when the cult get together.....funny that

Yeah the AFL has very few good qualities.

Shit rule changes, shitty umpiring, shitty fixtures, the chook-lotto tribunal, appallingly bad coverage. Hell their most prestigious award is the brownlow medal which is incredibly useless.

I think watching footy live is still fantastic, but when its on TV its not nearly as good. Also note that Port Adelaide's home games are ridiculously better than other clubs'.

I used to back in the 90's watch 2 or 3 games every round that didn't involve Port. That tapered off to it being at least 4 or 5 years since I've been able to put myself through a non-Port game. That includes finals and the Grand Final. For all the reasons above, plus my real dislike of non-Port games corresponding with the rise of Paul Roos and his 'we'll win, but you'd rather stick forks in your eyes, whilst someone squeezes your genitals in a vice then watch, as it's less painful' style of play, that spawned too many disciples/attempts to copy.

AFL coverage is utter garbage compared to other sports. The awfulness of commentary and Seven's penchant for SD has been done to death, but for mine, our tolerance of the actual direction of camerawork is bonkers.

You watch NBA, NFL, EPL, whatever. You get a nice field of vision that shows you all the relevant action. Be it a player on the ball, be it a player passing the ball, be it the ballhandler's options, you see everything you need to see to give you a full visual sit-rep in a given moment.

Once the play is over, time is stopped, a goal is scored, or it's quarter/half-time, then we get the super-slomo replays, zoom-ins and multiple angles required to show something notable from a closer perspective. Be a dunk, catch, goal, injury or foul, we see it in forensic detail before returning to the nice wideview action that keeps us abreast of everything.

With AFL coverage, for as long as I can remember, we've been treated to jarring zoom-ins and angle changes for literally no ****ing reason.

Ball gets kicked long, pack forms, oh it's a zoom-in where the only thing filling the screen is the 3 or 4 players contesting in the air. Then when it's a mark/spoil/other, we're given a zoom-out where we're fleetingly given a long shot of some more of the field, before being given another zoom-in of whoever's got the ball as he's surveying options we're not allowed to see until just as he's about to kick it.

Another favourite is when a player is running with the ball. Why are we treated to a zoom-in - often from a bizarre angle - that denies us the chance of seeing would-be tacklers or leading forwards?

I've always just assumed it's because they're trying to give guernsey sponsors and kit suppliers as much advertising time as possible, but isn't there enough of that when the ball goes out, or play is dead, when marks and goals can be replayed in all their slo-mo zoomy glory?

It's as if the techniques for filming footy were set in stone some time in the 90's and no-one has had the balls to stray from that template ever since.

This is done because of the toilet quality of SD that you have to zoom in so far to even recognise 90% of the players on the field and the number they wear.

From the AFL;

The leading individual award in the game is the Brownlow Medal, which has been awarded since 1924 to the Fairest and Best player in the AFL competition each season. ....

So why did the AFL not immediately strip Jobe Watson of the 2012 Brownlow after he was banned for doping in 2012?

Is the AFL saying that it is not sure if doping is fair or not? o_O

I am so glad they showed plenty of mongrel in those last few games and I'm glad we have now added a mongrel in Big Dixon. Plus Butch has shown plenty of mongrel in the SANFL. Never thought I would enjoy melees as I did at the end of last year. It was like opening the floodgates after a year sprinkled with insipidness and frustration.
Happened at both maggies and power games at the end of last year, like their was a direction from Ken to fire up.. Hopefully from round 1 this year we bring out the fists...

The AFL believes he is innocent right?

Its a really crazy situation.

We've clearly been misled as to the true meaning of the acronym AFL. It actually means Absolute F****** Lunatics, referring to the brilliant minds inside AFL House.

I assume everyone here that feels Jobe Watson should be stripped of his Brownlow has either written to AFL House expressing their views or at the very least signed the change.org petition?

I assume you're being sanctimonious because it feels good?

This thread has turned into a giant whinge fest. Footy is the greatest sport of all imo even with its imperfections.

If you honestly believe that will make a difference go right ahead. Maybe you could also start a Facebook page.

If you do nothing, nothing will get done.

Change.org has had very good success with their petitions.

If you have a better suggestion, I'm listening.
I assume you're being sanctimonious because it feels good?

No, because I believe that whingeing is pointless and I don't have any other option available to express my feelings on the matter. As I responded to wharfie though, if you have a better suggestion, I'm open to it.

If only the coverage was actually set in stone from the 90s. I was watching the 1999 Carlton v Essendon prelim on Fox Football the other day (as an aside, Kouta was even better than you remember if that is even possible) and it struck me how much better the coverage was than the rubbish we get served today. No in play close ups, no ant cam from somewhere up in the sky, no replays causing us to miss 15 seconds of play. Plus commentators who actually talk about the game rather than themselves. Bliss.

Like this one?

Gilligan will do what Gilligan believes best suits his KPI's.

Maybe so. I just get sick of people, not just on here but generally speaking, who complain about issues of many a kind but never do a thing to change it. My personal feeling is if a person has an issue with something, bloody do something. Whingeing pom may well have been a catch cry in times but frankly I think Australians are absolute shockers when it comes to bitching and whingeing about things they never lift a finger to change.
Twenty thousand signatures on that petition I can assure, will make people sit up and take notice and I have signed a number of change.org petitions with fifty thousand, a hundred thousand signatures and you know what, they were successful.
I think there's a hell of a lot more chance of forcing Gill in to action if we got 20,000 signatures than if we just sit on our hands and do nothing.
I'm still waiting for a better suggestion. Shit can my signature on the petition all you will, but do nothing, give me no suggestion as to a better solution and continue to complain about the state of affairs and one falls right into the category of whingeing Aussie.
That's all I have time for now and really, all I want to say on the matter.

Re Essendon's top ups

Won't they struggle big time with no preseason? +age
I'd imagine a fair few would still be in decent shape, some probably even contacted by the Dons to keep fit in case this situation eventuated.
But yes, they'll still struggle.
Reckon a few draft prospects will be tanking the champs this year in order to avoid being the number one pick.
