Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Richmond R18, 2023

Weird game. The team had the balance of play for a lot of it aside from letting them score in very fast bursts here and there, but just couldn't connect up forward. Some of their defenders were on fire but we've got to be better than that. At the other end, we continue to bleed goals to small forwards at a ridiculous rate.

Positives:
  • Hough fantastic again.
  • Allen with a Kennedy-esque "quiet game" for a lazy 3.1
  • Nice to see Darling get to 500, pretty good game from him overall.
  • Won clearances and only just lost i50s

Meh:
  • Lots of good passages that just fell apart at the end. Promising in a way but polish seriously lacking
  • Credit to Gaff for cracking in and playing one of his better games in years, I guess.
  • Stemmed the bleeding better than we have in a while but couldn't capitalise when we had the chance.

Negatives:
  • Kids quietish compared to the last few weeks.
  • Ginbey injury disappointing though he has looked pretty tired lately.
  • Miserable defending against the smalls (especially Bolton)
  • Forward 50 delivery absolutely woeful

David King on first crack giving it to Liam Duggan with his efforts at defending today showing 3 worse the p*ss weak efforts at defending and one on Tim Kelly

Actually said blokes like Duggan who are 26-27 who aren’t in the best 6-8 players at the club should be moved on as they are just passing time am otherwise…

Also said it’s not the kids letting the eagles down.

+

  • Sponsorship aside, thought Cole was fantastic both defensively and even got involved around stoppages
  • Hough is an absolute gem, my favourite of the newer eagles along with Long
  • Kelly tried all day with minimal help in the middle
  • Could tell Gaff pushed a lot harder + looked forward a lot more (kick still not very penetrating)

meh

  • Allen was beaten but still got 3 goals with ordinary service
  • When Hewett can produce for a whole game he will be a star
  • Similarly with my boy Long - if he can a bit more output will be quite the weapon
  • Bailey started well but faded - stilll impressed with the turnaround
  • SPS did some nice things but still probably not enough that earns a spot in a best 22

-
  • Shuey looked very slow in the stoppages and as soon as the tigers spread, it was an easy I50
  • Sheed just straight up sucks. Slow and isn't damaging at all when he does get it
  • Long periods of struggling to move the ball which sums up our whole year
  • Giving away easy goals

On the plus side we make excellent egg fried rice.
It's because we didn't use chili jam in our recipe.

This is garbage. He swanned around again, turned it over at will and put in zero defensive effort.

He is the epitome of what is wrong with this club but people just dont want to admit it cos of the draft capital we gave up to get him I feel. He has to end his time as a midfielder. He isnt up to it. He is and should be a full time HFF. I see him in the same role Pickett plays for Richmond

I know Jack isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed but his reaction to the question at 1:02 about how our season has gone to date was bizarre. Big cheesy grin and a giggle? Not sure it’s a laughing matter that the club is in the midst of it’s nadir but whatever Jack.

Also at 0:45 he indicates that Oscar is playing with a number of niggles. If his arm is in ordinary shape then I’m happy for the club to put him in cotton wool for the rest of the year.

Na you are wrong. He was good today.

Result much as expected.

Kids continue to show promise.

Credits crew continue to be exposed for lack of both pace and defensive skills.

Destroyed on scores from stoppage again (like every game this season), but did well to beat Richmond in scores generated from turnover, a team that has long specialised in scoring through that means.

A game that would be very forgettable for any neutrals. Both teams executed poorly and made a lot of mistakes under little pressure.

Match was lost on the scoreboard in 5 minutes of play that conceded 6 goals immediately before and after half time.

Bad decision-making and disposal moving into attack prevented the team from making this a much closer result.

There remains no hard edge to this team. By the end I was infuriated that Balta was able to roam and mark with so much confidence. He should have been flattened in a contest during the first quarter - make him fear that another hit might be coming, rather than allowing front position every time.

After he almost put his knee through Chesser's throat (in a fair contest, without malice), still nobody came over to sit him down for lining up a young player.

Small improvements, but a hell of a long way still to go.
Reckon last tine we played em Oscar got on top of Balta early on and he had a pretty average outing. Tgis time around Balta just got better with confidence

Na you are wrong. He was good today.
59% DE, 8 turnovers, 4 clangers and atleast half a dozen 5 step chases I counted. He also manged to burn teammates in better positions a few times and had a few handballs knocked down when players were free and waiting in better positions

This is the type of football we should be getting away from, not clapping.

Not suprised with this, we have a soft underbelly.

Really frustrating game, in some ways one of the most disappointing results of the year because we were even/slightly ahead in the contest but trailed all day and lost by 6 goals. It was incredibly hard to watch us grind the ball into our forward 50 pinball it around for multiple repeat stoppages for no return, and then see the Tigers run the length of the ground, easily overlap our defence and score uncontested.

Richmond did a very good job of opening up our defence and avoiding letting Gov, Barrass and Hurn have any real influence. I think we made a major blunder by playing SPS at half forward when we needed some dash off half back to set up play and keep the Richmond forwards honest.

A lot of games this year you can say well we didn't have the cattle, we had the players and the effort level today, our coaching staff just got their asses handed to them by the opposition.

Usually when we've had this sort of semi respectable loss this season its been followed by an absolute obliteration when the players drop their heads after getting no return for effort and half a dozen veterans wake up tomorrow unable to walk. I'm low key dreading the carlton game.

Pos:
-Loving Houghy's work
-TK did well to extract
-Darling 500
-Had a crack and and dug in, and could have caused some nerves if we kicked straight after going down by +40
-Gaff responded alright

Negs:
-That patch either side of half time. Completely asleep.
-Hurn struggled
-Can we please trade Sheed. Happy to remember the good times, but he might go better in a better team.
-Injuries

I thought we played harder at the ball and the opposition than we have in years.

Basement expectations ofc, but I was pretty happy with that performance.

I don't think it was bizarre. I saw his reaction as he was probably thinking "season is shithouse" but he knew not to say that, so he gave a bit of a frustrated laugh.

Kelly pretty much epitomised how the day went for us really. Summed up in one player.

Got to the ball a bit, had a lot of chances, did a lot of good things.... aaaaaand undid so much hard work time and time again with poor disposal or a fumble at a critical moment just when you think we're out.

Frustrating. Indeed. Wasn't awful, just like the team wasn't awful, however it wasn't good either. I'm certainly not thrilled or happy with the performance.

It's only the fact we've been such a basket case for so long and we're getting used to it now that a day like today doesn't hurt as much as it once would've

Negatives - seat resale gave us some obnoxious Richmond supporters behind us - motor mouths lubricated with alcohol who had no bloody idea of what was going on - cleared most seats around them before the end of the 1st 1/4.
Positives….. I sat them out - kept my mouth and fists in check- when they watched a father take his 5 year old to the park at the last 5 minutes of a game and say “sore loser” can’t stay til the end I was close to pushing the drunkards down the stairs.

For the game - negative…..Ginbey injury, basic skill errors, not converting some of the goals
Positive JD - 500 goals - well done, Maric put heart and soul into it, Long…..I love the 2nd and 3rd effort

Sounds exactly like the blokes we had behind us, had my old man and 11 year old daughter with me. We moved down three rows to get away from it, pretty average. Good looking bunch of blokes too....

Honestly dont know what to make of SPS.
None of his posessions were clean, often 2 to 3 takes to gain posession...fumbly...worse than captain fumbles.

Delist pile for me.
He was particularly poor at times in creating a contest up the ground when we were exiting defence. I think 3 of our exits in the first several minutes of the game went to SPS and he was simply really poor.
Watching him live I’d question his work rate and defensive efforts but then he’s not alone there.

Some people have canned SPS.I thought he was our best player with ball in hand.Very composed and got some candy.Tackles ferociously. I think the club needs to take him aside and say “ mate your better than you and a lot of other people think”. Get his confidence up. He has first rate decision making and disposal.
Our forward line gets s**t delivery but don’t help themselves by standing still or not working for each other.
OS is probably injured but he doesn’t help himself by not changing his modus operandi. If you’re getting mugged in the air then go low.Lead hard, get blocks, get mids to scrubber the ball low and kick to space .
I can’t believe the amount of long useless kicks to nobody. Like length is more important than quality! Flying Ryan would be tearing his hair out
