Richmond

Claremont Tigers, Glenelg Tigers
Still four weeks to go including a practice match and a Community Round but I thought it might be entertaining to look as possible R1 Matchups with the old foe:

Carlton fans are up and about if their board is anything to go by. Here's a recent R1 lineup from their board:

Plowman McDonald/Young McGov
Williams Weitering Saad
Docherty Cripps O’Brien
Pittonet/TDK Hewett Cerra
Fisher Curnow Martin
Silvagni McKay Durdin/Honey

Ed Curnow Kemp Dow Kennedy

Docherty might be struggling to make R1 but he's a tough campaigner after what he's been though. McDonald is Oscar McDonald ex Melb. They have kids like Kemp, Honey and Stocker pushing for spots. Interesting to see if they go with two rucks, Pittonet and De Koning.

Here's a "probables" team for us including some possibles:

Rioli Tarrant Miller/Gibcus
Broad Grimes Vlaustin
Macca Cotchin Pickett
Bolton Lynch Edwards
Baker JackR Caddy/Balta
Nank Dusty Prestia

Soldo RCD Ralph Stack

Edit: Short instead of Ralph as the 7th defender (?) and possibly George instead of Stacky.

Sub: Mansell/Ross/Sonsie and a bunch of others pressing claims...

Lambo and Graham won't play R1 it seems so a couple will get their chance. Geez our half backline looks hard to beat. Then again we will have to be awake to their half backline trying to slingshot forward with Williams and Saad.

Some of the interesting possible match-ups:

McKay - Tarrant
Curnow - Grimes/Broad
Dusty - Hewitt/Ed Curnow
Lynch - Weitering
JackR - McDonald/Young
Balta - McGov
Prestia - Cerra

Thoughts ?

Bloody hell their 22 is pitiful.

How on earth will Plowman, Young, Saad, Weitering and McGovern hold our forward line to under 100 points?

Their midfield is Cripps (cooked) and Cerra (meh), then a bunch of C grade hacks.

Outside of McKay, they have no firepower whatsoever. Curnow (see: Cripps), Martin (dud), Silvagni (dud), Honey (who?), Fisher (actually goes alright tbf). Will McKay and Fisher kick 12 between em? Because they will need to.

How have these campaigners been so shit for so long, yet half that 22 isn’t AFL quality. McGovern, Young, Dow, Kemp, Kennedy, O’Brien, Honey, E. Curnow, Silvagni, Plowman, Pittonet, etc. Jeepers… We will roll them by five goals with the gear in reverse and the hand break still on.

george is the first magnet on the board and it's disrespectful to see him not even listed here

If George continues to play at the level he did on the weekend I'm sure he will fight his way back into the team. I am never disrespectful to anyone wearing the yellow and black. As far as I'm concerned even pulling on the jumper is a mighty achievement.

yeah i wasn't being serious about it being disrespectful but i don't think there's much chance of stack starting round1 over george/aarts just yet, he has the talent to do it but george is just seasoned at this point and it'll be up to stack to push him out of the side. would have to be a couple of insane practice matches after like you mentioned seeing george's performance and then compared to stacks (albeit they were on diff teams with one being more dominant)

You have omitted Short on purpose?

I think Caddy is a smokey to make the round one side as a defensive mid/forward given the question marks around both Lambert and Graham.

The biggest question for me is Soldo vs Balta. Do one or both play? Does Balta have to return to the back line in order to make the team?

I think the club is doing the right thing. Playing safe will not win us a flag this year. I think we would need players like Balta, Bolton and of course Martin causing big headaches for opposition teams with their attacking play.

I am now thiinking Soldo won’t make the round 1 team and it might be along these lines:

Back 7

Grimes Tarrant Broad Short Rioli Vlastuin Mansell

Rucks/mids

Nankervis(Balta 2nd ruck) Cotchin Martin Prestia Edwards McIntosh Pickett RCD

Forward 7

Bolton Stack Castagna Baker Balta Riewoldt Lynch

The spot that looks most doubtful to me is the RCD position, it could be something like Bolton in there and RCD out and a different player forward.

Listening to the coaches it sounds unlikely we will see any debuts rd 1 at this stage and I think that is sensible.

If Caddy continues to play well they might reward his form as you suggest. I can also see Soldo building form and match fitness in the VFL. He is coming off a full knee reco and a second operation after a setback, after all.
