Why do people want Dickson dropped? Took a few marks inside 50 but kicking for once let him down. If he’d kicked 2-3 nobody would want him dropped, let the rustiness get shaken off first
Exactly.

It's like those who think Carlton are no good. They kick a few goals from time to time but getting the four points after the final siren continually lets them down. If they'd win two or three premierships, no body would think they're no good.

for me with Naughton playing up forward and Moz doing his acl we need to play a key back.
so for me its
Pick 1
Trengove
Roberts
Young

Drop 1
Williams
Dickson
Smith

any combination I'm happy with

Thought young had some real potential a couple years back. Can anyone tell me where he's at? Has he bulked up much since then?

I don’t get why a few a calling for Lippy to come straight back in, hasn’t done much in a while. Gone backwards like Bailey Dale, I would wait for him to show some consistency in form then call him up.

Why another key defender can I ask? Our defenders get broken down by the highball when the midfield breaks down. We need to continue pressing in the midfield to protect our back half. We cannot play negatively/reactively. We do not have the personnel to win that position especially with Naughton up front. I thought the personnel attending the centre bounce was all wrong during Sydney's run in the 4th with at stages all of Mclean, Williams and Dickson attending the centre bounce instead of our out and out contested ball winners. That's how Sydney got on top of us and go their momentum going.
No. Sydney got all the momentum from Cordy’s turnover kick that led to a Sydney goal, that started their run.

You can’t get momentum if you don’t have the ball. One turnover costs us a goal but does not sustain momentum. If Royal is right and we had our 2nds midfield rotation in there that is absolutely the bigger problem. We mandhandled their midfield for three quarters of the game.

The concern should be the pressure drop off in the fourth. But who knows maybe Bevo instructed the mid rotations to preserve a bit. One criticism of our most dangerous footy “men of mayhem” is that it is not sustainable for a whole season. I have no doubt that he is looking for ways to dominate the contested stuff without depleting our troops.

Having a few more hard nut rotations in Jong and West might prove important across the season.

First time I've been looking forward to footy during the season for a while. Being at the game on the weekend was a pleasure - not just because of the win, but because of the fun style of football we played.

On a low note, no way in hell Williams can play this week. Worst game I've seen him play at any level and it was a continuation of his shocking form in pre-season. He needs to work through it at VFL level. I'd play one of the Youngs, Lipinski or Hayes over him, depending on VFL form. Greene a chance too.

Smith's not ready but we may as well give him another week if we've committed to giving him a go. He worked into the game so he can have another run around.

We should be playing Trengove over English if we're seriously trying to put our best side on the field, but it sounds as though we'll persist with him for now.

FB: Crozier - Cordy - Duryea
HB: Daniel - Wood - Richards
C: Hunter - Bontempelli - Smith
HF: McLean - Schache - Lloyd
FF: Wallis - Naughton - Gowers
R: English - Macrae - Liberatore
I: Dunkley - Suckling - Dickson - Young/Young/Hayes/Lipinski/Greene

Smith hasn’t really been given just one game, he played a half and a full jlt game and looked off the pace there as well. Having someone only get 8 possessions spending a lot time on the wing really hurts the team. There’s no need this year to be bringing in youth for the sake of youth.

I hope there’s more height brought into the backline at some stage but this wouldn’t be the week to do it, Hawthorn don’t have the big forwards to worry about.

The midfield should be far to strong for Hawthorns, but can the side actually convert that dominance onto the scoreboard?

Its all very well to develop English but nor do we want to destroy him. Playing the giant stick insect solo against two seasoned rucks like McEvoy and Ceglar is a recipe for destruction IMO.

Also English being gassed was a factor in the Swans comeback IMO.

Trengove in and Williams out.

Hayes in for Smith is the only change I'd make. Hayes is a ball magnet, doesn't always use it the best but that's fine if he's getting 25+ disposals.

Keep the midget backline. Cordy to Roughy, Wood to Gunston and Crozier/Williams on the resting ruck. You absolutely do not bring in someone like Roberts to nullify bloody Jonathon Ceglar. We'll need all the speed we can get under the roof.

I still don't understand how so many people are convinced English played well against Sydney. Only 8 disposals, 1 mark and 19 tapouts. Yes he did some good things, but he also tapped it to Sydney players a lot, particularly in the 4th quarter. This is a case of warped perceptions if I've ever seen one.

Trengove got 28 disposals and 3 goals in the VFL, and that's on top of strong late season form last year. If we want to beat Hawthorn, he should be in the team, be it for English or maybe Smith/Schache. If English solo rucks, McEvoy will destroy him.

Is that a typo? Omitting Schache means Hawks would focus primarily on Naughton, as Trengove would be unlikely to rest forward when off the ball, particularly as he has consistently shown he is inept in the forward line, and English resting forward would still keep the focus on Naughton. Naughton and Schache compliment each other well, and Schache showed in the second half of 2018 and, admittedly in patches, on Saturday that he is a more than competent forward.

Schache was mostly poor against Sydney. Not strong enough in the air, and kicked only one goal from a free kick, which was a dumb error from Melican.

That being said, I'll admit we desperately need him playing well this season because we lack goalscorers. For that reason alone, I'd keep him in the team.

Trengove coming in is still a no-brainer. People also forget he was recruited here to play in defence, another area we're currently undersized in. Considering Sam Reid gave us problems on Saturday, chances are one or more of Roughead, Gunston or McEvoy could give us bigger problems.

Don't disagree with Trengove coming in, would be flabbergasted if Schache was even considered as an omission though. However, if Trengove comes in to partner English in the ruck, unlikely he would be expected to rest in defence if they split ruck 50/50, unless English rucks 70-80%, and Trengove chops out for the remainder. Will be an interesting selection outcome Thursday night. I expect a straightforward swap Trengove for Williams, but with Bevo who knows?

Disagree with this. Mathew Boyd constantly getting 25+ disposals as midfielder was no good for us IMO. As a backman (a stunning piece of initiative/intuition by Bevo) it turned out to be a different story.
Would prefer better users than Hayes if they're available.

Trengove is a liability as a defender. Bevo said in his presser that he is competing for the ruck spot only.

I liked Smith's last quarter but he just looked overawed for the first three.

He's in the side for his speed so I'm not sure Lippi or Hayes is purely like for like. Hayes isn't slow but his kicking looked way off in the JLT. Lippi is more attacking than pure wingman for mine, just wish he had a little more legspeed.

I wasn't at the game, only saw it on TV. From what i saw Smith didn't look quick (he didn't look slow either just not a speedster). Is the concensus that he is a quick player?

One of his best qualities is his burst speed - his highlights footage reminds me a lot of someone like Dangerfield. His kicking was also elite in U18s.

Hopefully these traits still carry over, and we will see it once he's had some time to catch up to the standards of AFL

Maybe you have to align with the perceptions of the coach. He did not rate TC or Rough and both are gone. We won the clearances comfortably 41-32, stoppages 30-22 and the centre bounces 11-10. So how important are hit outs in Bevo's overall game plan? McEvoy will no doubt win the hit outs but who will get the ball out? Libba was an absolute dynamo and his presence alters the clearance dynamics unbelievably.

English was excellent in following up the ruck contests and will become more competitive, just give him time.

Some young guys have confidence from the start Bailey Smith strikes me as not that sort of guy. He will be fine he is just a baby give him one more in the in the ones and if he has an average game put in the twos until he kicking the door down. Then he comes back with confidence.

Couldn't hurt to give him two more. He gets another tough one against the Hawks, then a much easier game against the Suns to hopefully bring him some confidence and keep the hunger alive, then if Lipinski is still performing in the VFL we swap them out (or reshuffle positions and bring JJ back by that point)

I couldnt believe the set-ups we had at the centre bounces when Sydney got their run on. Had Gowers in there was well at times.
Ideally we need 1 of Bont, Libba and Dunkley at all centre bounces

What do people want to do with Trengove or English when theyre not in the ruck? Clog up a forward line that for the first time in years was mobile and dangerous with plenty of space? No thanks.

Clog up a mobile defence who provided plenty of run and clean skills all game? Nope

Sit on the bench and waste a much needed small rotation? Nope.
