Priority Picks fair?

To use your analogy, if you asked people about paying tax, a large majority would say they are happy to do so, as long as everyone is treated the same, with some concessions for the more needy. I will happily support someone in need of help.

However, most people will object to having to pay more than someone who 'unfairly' pays less or who gets more.

Show me someone who happily pays tax while Kerry Packer doesn't and while 3 generations of a family live off handouts down the beach.

The priority picks are too concessional.

The question was directed at Deej and his proclimations of never taking a handout.

Even if he went to the most prestigeous school in Australia it still gets govt grants and therefore he got handouts.

Tax Cuts are handouts. $7,000 to get a new home is a handout.

A new classroom for my kids school is a handout.

Reopening the rail link to Bairnsdale is a handout.

The list goes on. And the analogy is flawed.

If that is Deej's politics, well thats cool, but it isn't appropriate for a competition that wants to maximise revenue, and thats what the AFL's first priority is. And they are suceeding brilliantly in that respect.

Deej, I'm sure I could find countless posts where you're going on about your 'achievements'.

Hey good luck to you, but don’t get precious when people take the mickey for doing it. Your mum should have told you that self praise is no praise at all.

BTW, I don’t think Fred thinks StKilda is a crappy club.
Self praise ha who has heaped any self praise? I certainly didn't. Money does not equate to success. I just stated facts to explain my mindset (which was having it's integrity questioned). I don't like handouts that's all i was saying, and it's not just internet bull**** talk the talk, i walk it too.

Who cares if i do or don't, the issue is handouts. Why can't a person make a statement about principles without someone questioning the integrity of said statement? Which is what happened to me in this thread, well BEFORE i mentioned anything about my personal situation.

Nope, I came from absolutely nothing and I'm fast on my way to being a self made millionaire (in fact i think my business is already worth more than that) and never got a single handout along the way and i haven't changed a bit still a down to earth person who loves a beer and i'm no better or worse than anyone else apart from those who want handouts to further themselves. I would always have this attitude mate it got nought to do with carlton.

I wonder what you think of those that went in the opposite direction to you.

If you want to look at the impact of priority picks, you need to not so much look at the teams that got them, but at the teams who got bumped down the draft because of them.

For example Kangaroos finished 13th and had their first pick at #7 in 2001 when it should've been #4.

Thats Hale instead of Polak.
Geelong with Bartel instead of Xavier Clarke.
Melbourne with Luke Molan instead of Ashley Sampi.

Its not like the AFL just magically create extra players to give away as priority picks, you're taking them from somewhere and it is felt the most by teams that only just missed out on the threshold for priority picks by winning instead of losing.

Very concise and hard to argue with. Not only do clubs with priority picks benefit from the picks they get, they disadvantage every other club.

Are you saying that i should pay tax on my gross margin before expenses? Should work-related expenses not be construed as a tax deduction? That is ridiculousand fanciful rubbish and not relevent in the slightest. You are making up ridiculous scenarios to attack me personally and my integrity on this issue.

you're right, telling complete strangers how much you are worth when they haven't even asked does speak volumes for your mindset...

so who will play you in the movie of your rags to riches tale?

What's wrong with them, as long as they're honest people what's the difference between having money and not having money. Money is overrated, challenges and exploration and contentment are what is important.

Deej, don't bother with them.

The StKilda football club will never acknowledge hard work as being honest work. They would rather take the "handouts" every time. You’re wasting your time.

Most spend their time unemployed looking for the “dole” cheque for a living. ;)

An enormous difference.

All right Deej, let's look at this from our perspective.

Firstly, I run, and have done since I was 19, my own business. What's it worth, couldn't tell you, wouldn't if I knew. But hey, that's me. Over the years I have given literally tens of thousands of dollars supporting my football team, changed business travel plans to attend games and supported my club through thick and mostly thin. And I’m not alone; tens of thousands of Saints fans have done likewise.

Take a look at the current St Kilda admin, and in particular the two key members running the show. Self made people, and I hazard a guess more successful than you. Both these men were prepared to cop the scorn of the football would in rebuilding their football club. It is in large part why historically we have been unable to attract successful business people into the fold. But these guys did it and despite all the knockers have started to reap the benefits.

Now for you to suggest that all the work put in by them over the last three years is solely due to handouts given by the AFL, I find completely ludicrous given your spiel about hard work and rewards.

Yeah and they attack my integrity for having my opinion and when i try to defend myself the entire thread gets railroaded into a lets make fun of deej thread. Can't we stick to discussing the difference in the principles of hard work and determination over being spoonfed and supported?

I never said it was SOLELY due to handouts, I said it was aided greatly by handouts and thus very much cheapened compared to any success achieved in an open system.

Yeah and your mob are weaklings that had to be helped to get anywhere. A truly pathetic excuse for a club. Any success you achieve is thanks to being a bunch of welfare recipient handout draft bunnies.
So you didn't post this?

Did you go to school Deej, did you go to University? If you went to school, you got handouts, if you went to Uni, you got handouts.

Dont get all precious. I am attacking your statement you never received handouts, not you personally.
Dont get a victims mentality, after all your rugged individualism ,power of one philosophy relies on blaming the victim.
You must hate me Deej. I got a handout by the govt. I actually went to Uni and only paid HECS. I got a handout to better myself.
ou must believe I, and the vast majority of Uni graduates are worthless parasites....BUT.... at the same time you see nothing wrong with minimising your tax because the current tax law (akin to AFL rules) allow work related expenses to be educted from assessable income.
Need to be a little more lateral in ones think i believe Deej. not a critisism, mind you, just a different way of looking at the situation, as opposed to the limited orthodox view of the haves v have nots.

It's great to reach the summit. It's also very easy to fall down the other side right to the bottom.

Is that all you've got to say for yourself now? Attack the man? I also think you're a complete dip**** and guess what your club is still nothing but one great big welfare recipient.

well you presented the man. Nobody ever asked you how much money you make, yet you thought it important enough to tell us. Someone calls you on it and out comes the ugly Deej lurking just below the surface.

pathetic, really. oh, and if you can provide stats on how many single mothers with 7 children own a mercedes, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You are sending mixed signals Deej. JeffDunne has shown who has put the Saints back on an even keel, you then say that you never said that it was soley due to priority picks, Jee then posts your post, and now you are just getting hysterical and making a fool of yourself.

Funny how you didn't answer any of my questions Deej.

Ever go to school Deej?

Ever go to Uni Deej?

Ever cheat on your taxes Deej?

Silence is deafening..........

Hey everyone, you know what? I wouldn't have anywhere near as much a problem with this saints situation right now if you'd only be honest with yourselves and just say yep we admit it we're not a strong enough club to compete with most of the other clubs and we need these handouts to compete and ok it might not be a stkilda team dominating on their own merits in an open competition but it's all we're capable of doing so we'll take it. I wouldn't agree with that stance but i'd respect it just a fraction more than this living in denial thing most of you seem to have.

Cheat, no.

Mabye if GT has a heart attack Mrs Thomas could buy a Merc with the insurance, and she has eight children. But wait thats a form of handout isn't it? :D :D

Give it up kahuna - Deej's argument has been blown to bits. All you will get is the poor victim, you lot are welfare recipients rant, with, may I add, absolutely no proof to back up his wild claims.

Straws are being clutched.

I'm getting out of this thread, i been down the road with this poster again and it is a skewed and deluded path to oblivion.

Good luck.
