Pro's vs Con's regarding Connolly

Ok, I am throwing this out to the wider Freo community to gauge the current mood.

I have my own views about cuddles but I have heard many differing ones also......SO.......

I would like anyone to post a thread regarding him stating his pro's and con's so I can get some kind of "bigger picture".

Given that these threads can run away from the original idea, I will stipulate the guidelines and HOPE's everyone adheres to it please.

Now let me state for the record that I am not muckracking or trolling but am very interested to hear the opinions of like minded supporters so I can be sure I'm not just firing from the hip regarding him.

It just seems like a pointless exercise that has been done to death on this and every other forum.

All it inevitably ends up being is a pissing contest between the people holding opposing views.

And at this stage of the season it causes nothing but disharmony.

Just my opinion.

It just seems like a pointless exercise that has been done to death on this and every other forum.

Actually it hasn't been done before, not in this format (not that I can find anyway).

I drew the idea from a similar critique on Sheedy in Fridays west and discovered some things I didn't know about him.

This exercise is designed for people who dislike CC to find positives about him and those who like him to perhaps to find some areas he needs work in.

Providing everyone sticks to the format i.e. a heading Pro's and heading Con's, then I think we can all learn a bit more about him.

If it does end up as a "Pissing contest" then I guess that is simply a sad reflection on freo supporters as a whole!

- Has given the club a large media profile, which has helped increase membership and sponsorship revenue.
- Supports his players publicly.
- Never blames injuries for a loss.
- Has improved on match day.
- Is always positive.

Con's
- Struggles to keep the players motivated.
- Sometimes comments on issues when it would be less controversial to keep his opoinions to himself.
- Has his favourite players who are sometimes selected when others are more deserving.
- Uses the word "look" at the start of a lot of sentences.

Pretty close to the mark, and i'll add a couple of my own

Pros:
- Seems to be good with building up committed players confidence.
- Can really chop up the mediocre coaches of the comp on his day.
Cons:
- Has about 15 assistant coaches
- Likes to pass the buck "You'll have to talk to mark harvey about that one" - your the coach mate, you should know this shit.
- Gets outcoached by the better coaches in the league
- Too soft on Players. He has the nickname cuddles for a reason.
- Slings too many cliches in interviews.

I have sorted some of the Cons into things that actually matter and things that don't, without saying I agree with them;

Cons:

Things that Matter;
- Gets outcoached by the better coaches in the league
- Too soft on Players. He has the nickname cuddles for a reason.
- Struggles to keep the players motivated.
- Has his favourite players who are sometimes selected when others are more deserving.

Things that Don't Matter, or are minor, or are just annoying.
- Has about 15 assistant coaches

- Sometimes comments on issues when it would be less controversial to keep his opoinions to himself.

Given the list of Cons, in my category of Things that Matter, if I had no idea who we were talking about I would be wondering why you would get rid of the coach. The only point on that list that would be difficult to remedy is getting outcoached by the better coaches, and it is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The others are much more easily fixed. I would be suggesting that you would only get rid of this coach if one who could out-Coach better coaches was going to replace him.

Connolly's record against Pagan and Malthouse is good, but has struggled against Matthews, Roos, and especially Sheedy.

And of course there is Worsfold. So from this top 6 list, he sits in the middle.

I'd dispute that, it may be more a function of home ground advantage.

Connolly has coached against Paul Roos 8 times, and only twice at Subiaco. Both those times we won. The other six times, five have been at the SCG, a ground so small it's laughable and once at Telstra Stadium (the only time we have ever played there).

Against Matthews, we have played three times at Subi for two wins (a massive ten goals thumping in 05 and a gritty 9 point win in their last premiership year) and three times at the Gabba for three losses. We have never won a game at the Gabba in six attempts.

I'd agree with you on Sheedy, he's a wily old fox.

Yeah I know but I really don't want it to deteriorate into a slanging match against Cuddles; I really would like it to be as objective as possible.

My comment wasn't actually serious. I was just joking. I think there is a little bit of frustration about a) the clubs performance this year and b) the supporters negativity on here directed at certain individuals. Your post targets one of those individuals. A little like that fabulous paper has by running a Poll about Connolly. Most people think we should wait till the end of the year, then decide the future of the coach. especially because it has been mad abundently clear that that is what is going to happen.
