Re: PSD Pick Poll

So we should pick the druggy?

Yep, the AFL has let him down, we know he can play footy. Live away from Perth, great support network at Essendon, worth the risk I think.

Re: PSD Pick Poll

Would love to see Cousins in red & black.

If not him, then DeBoer or Sharlpes.

Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

DELISTED AFL players have little hope of resurrecting their careers in the AFL pre-season draft, with at least three of the six clubs with selections firmly committed to youth.
Recruiting managers at Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Essendon, Carlton, the Brisbane Lions and Richmond have identified the spectre of the new AFL team on the Gold Coast and, further down the track, western Sydney, as the basis for their decisions.
Essendon is keen to snare Port Melbourne's pint-sized speedster Robin Nahas in either the AFL pre-season or rookie drafts on December 16.
The Bombers, who are holding their cards close to their chest in the lead-up to the draft, are aiming to replenish their midfield and ruck stocks, according to list manager Adrian Dodoro.
Nahas, 20, is one of the most explosive midfielders in the VFL and played all 22 games this year with the Borough.
The scintillating ball-winner was Port's second-best goalkicker with 49 and was Victoria's best in the state game against South Australia in May, culminating in him being named the league's best young player.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

pint sized sounds a bit worrying. need some biggerbodied blokes in there. speed always sounds number 1 at dons at the moment.

agree with getting another ruck at some point.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Seen him play a bit in the VFL this year, and is more of a small forward, but a very impressive one at that. Having said that, yes he is very small and skinny, but it's only taking up our last primary list spot, definately worth the shot if we don't believe there is anyone better out there.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Better be for a rookie spot. He can play but he is way too small and gets knocked of the ball very easily. At 20 i doubt he will get a whole lot bigger.
IMO would be a waste of a pick .

What is the minimal size for a footy player? I would love to see smaller guys dominating on the footy field. One of the best aspects of our game is the fact that people of many different sizes are able to play. This is why league is shite because all the players are the same size (giant).

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

He was dominating in the VFL, but I doubt he could have the same impact at AFL level, purely because of his small frame. If he could bulk up a little more and ask to play FP, he could be very handy. But with Alwyn, Leroy, Monfries, etc he might find it hard to get a spot as that small forward.

Youth was the original plan so lets stick with it. We won't be able to get our hands on some young guys come next year, so I don't see any problem with picking all youngsters.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Don't we have enough of these chihuahua-sized players? Williams, Magin? I'd put Davey in there but he's semi-proven himself and is arguably the "larger" of that trio. Surely we can't add another to the list?

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

hes 176cm and 67kgs.. from what i have seen he can play but obviously he hasnt been proven at the highest level and only time will tell... the kid plays for portmelbourne on a tiny ground where he has no space and his speed is less of an advantage so i think given the larger grounds in the afl he still may
be able to have an impact...

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

I remember people having questions about Alwyn's height in the lead up to the draft. He turned out alright;)

He was more physically developed & faster than Nahas even at that stage when we first drafted Alwyn. May not have read it on the scales, but you could just see it by the way they dealt with different kinds of physical pressure.

Re: PSD Pick Poll

No respect if we pick up that hack

Yet you have no dramas picking up a bloke with a history of drug related offences, lets also remember that the Saints conducted a 5 month investigation and thought he was too big a risk. There is obviously something still wrong with Cousins. I'd be happy with Skipworth imo.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Being a victim of height all throughout juniors i would love to see a small fella prove the doubters wrong. I wish recruiters (at all levels) were not as narrow sighted when it comes to picking skillful players from beam poles. I guess i am a little bit bitter but it would be nice for someone to buck the trend given it's virtually impossible.

agree with alwyn being quicker then nahas but alwyn is the fastest player on the field in the afl.. so nahas might be slower but still not that big of a deal... nahas max benches over 100kgs as stated in an interview with sade ghazi (port melbourne ex coach) a couple of years ago.. weighing only 67kgs and benching that much has to tell you the kid has some strength even if its not visible

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

I may be incorrect but wasn't Tony Libratore only 163cm

If he is really quick with good disposal skills I'm not concerned by his small sizes, actually it adds variety to the midfield mix.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Jarryd Blair, Dylan Joyce, Xavier Gotch and Andrew Hooper are all TAC cup short people who I prefer over Nahas. Once Nahas was paid closer attention to he struggled noticably.
Surely we would look at Gaertner, Klemke, Francis, Hayes, Allwright, Weadon, Cockie, Schmidt, Carroll, Deboer, Chris Johnson, Zac Dawson, Purves, Van Unen, Sengstock, McGarry, Milne, Stanton, Renton, Healy etc over this bloke?

I played indoor footy with his little brother and also with him for a few games. They are tiny. It would definitely be a struggle to get him to pack the weight on but time will tell.

Re: Bombers set sights on speedy VFL midfielder

Anyone who saw the VFL GF this year will know where i was coming from. The bigger bodied Nth Ballarat players smashed him all night and took him out of the game. If he is going to out bodied at VFL level then there is no chance he is going to be effective at AFL level.

He is a massive 3Kg heavier than Nahas. I don't know if you have seen Alwyn up close but if you did you would say that there is no way he could play AFL football.

How has the AFL let him down ?
He got himself into the mess he is in so he has to accept the results of his actions. Sure the AFL put up some serious testing for him to go through if he returns (no worse than athletics though ) but it was not the AFL who made the decison for Ben to go down the road he went.
At the end of the day you have to answer for your own stuff ups.

And on another note i don't think we will be picking up Rockliff. From what i hear our recruiting staff don't rate him.
