Review QF: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

Comprehensively and brutally outcoached.

Collingwood choked up our forward line and we just kept bombing it in, absolutely stupidity.

Milera flat track bully again.

Hinge didn't do anything.

Our defense battled well, again, but were hung out to dry by the midfield.

No Rankine hurt us severely.

Key moments went against us - ANB toe poke was clearly a goal, Houston blatant throw missed. Smith bombing it blindly into the forward line.

We played like shit, barely a winner on the field.

Need Rash back ASAP.

ROB was good to get his contract, been progressively worse every week, was absolute shit tonight.

Keays, know your ****ing limitations, you kill us when you don't.

Good: Let's pay tribute to Tex. He played about as good as we could've hoped.

Laird into the middle really really helped later on. I think that needs to go again next week.

Bad: Its never good to get outplayed all night. The momentum at the end showed what we could do but you sense some of that is also down to Collingwood soaking it all up.

Ugly: Coaching. I reckon Nicks needed to do more earlier. Bit too little too late.

Decision making - just baffling at times. Key moments and we couldn't get it done.

HOWEVER - the pile on already in this thread is a massive overreaction. A lot of young players playing their first final under the weight of expectations given the meteoric rise. We got to see whether they could handle it and they couldn't. But the odds were Stacked against them to do it.

Given our overall poor night and the fact that we will play a winning team I reckon no matter how deep we go we will always be the underdogs from here on. Maybe thats what they need to free themselves of that extra layer of pressure.

I hope Nicks doesn't overreact (and history says he wont) because he just needs them to go out and play footy like they have been but from now on with that ferocious pressure we saw all year.

Game was clearly won and lost between the ears. Thilthorpe couldn't judge a ball in flight and make 2 baffling decisions. Some players just totally went missing, played on under pressure and just dump handballed/kicked.

There is a chance we go out in straight sets, there is a chance we make a prelim.

Either way it's good experience and itll serve us well for 2026.

It's not the apocalypse.

On this forum, it's either wonderful or awful. This loss is not the end of the world, as they obviously found lack of finals football exoerience costly.

However, they have to learn from tonight. Nicks was outcoached and some players were really found out. The Michallaney move was kindergarten stuff and the defence suffered as a result.

Good: Walker, Pedlar, Thilthorpe and Laird in patches. Another chance, will win next week.

Bad: Thin midfield, no variety going inside 50,.

Ugly: Too many anonymous players - Peatling, Taylor, Milera, Fogarty, Bond. Soligo had an ordinary game.

First, this will serve as a major learning experience for the organization top to bottom.

You do NOT start doing things that you didn't do all season long, regardless of losing a player or not.

It tells your inexperienced squad that despite being minor premiers and beating the Pies a couple weeks ago--that you a) fear them and b) are scrambling around overthinking

Your team is who they are--win or lose by being who you are

Next, it was clear the moment was to big for certain players. That is to be expected when it is the first foray into championship football.

However, it is inexcusable to make mistakes like kicking a turn over in front of your 50 and eschewing a kick at goal to handball to another player.

I expect us to get back to who we have been. I expect us to win next week.

After that it is gravy

So they have had their beaks wetted now, time to move forward

Legitimately atrociously hideous: The fox commentary was some of the most insufferable I’ve ever heard
I didn’t get to see much but apparently Rankine snuck on for two disposals in the last?

Dawson was our best mid, and he was so far below what he’s capable of

Berry was our second best, and he had TWELVE TOUCHES

I thought Laird was the only player that looked like doing anything in the midfield.

Rory ****ing Laird. The guy we kicked out of there because he wasn't good enough.

Disaster

Ugly: Michalanney
Wasn’t given a clear role tonight.

Mind you our system was poor everywhere.

Bottom line is our midfield got another smashing & we just didn’t get enough quality ball into our forward line.

Only Tex & Pedlar looked likely up forward.

Geez, we had some dumb moments, particularly 2 from Filthy.

Not to say I told you so but anyone who knows footy could see that win a few weeks ago was a Pyrrhic victory that was going to cost us a finals win against them.

We played all our cards that night, the only ones we had.
Phyrrus died when an old lady lobbed a roof tile at his head.

Jenny how is your throwing arm?

Dawson was our best mid, and he was so far below what he’s capable of

Berry was our second best, and he had TWELVE TOUCHES
Which is a huge indictment given that was probably Mawson's worst game for the club.

We waited 8 long years for this...?

Well that was a tad disappointing. A carbon copy of almost every final we've played since 2005
2017 they played well in both finals leading up to GF

Good:
Really struggling to find a good.

Bad:
So many players had poor games, maybe 3 or 4 had a 'good' game.

Ugly:
Nicks team selection.
Nicks gameplan/tactics or lack thereof.
Nicks deciding to mix up our midfield and went with Laird and Keays instead of Curtin and Taylor - moronic.
Nicks moving players out of their best positions after winning 9 games in a row Max forward, Laird in the middle.

Confirmation that Nicks takes after his mentor in Hinkley, when the whips are cracking in September the bad coaches get found out.

Started with midfield ended with dumb arse entries to the forward 50, that's it.

Need Curtin or someone different in the midfield, GWS will carve us up, so will Hawks.

Constantly kicking long to Moore was plainly stupid, yet we kept doing it. Shitting the bed, not looking for the short sideways kicks. Daicos showed us how to do it, our players aren't good enough

When you go to the MCG for Collingwood v Richmond, the Tigers fans don't boo the Collingwood chant.
They weren’t booing because it was Collingwood they were booing for the snitching

Retaining Bond was a shocking call. For all the moaning about Murphy that selection call was the worst of the year. Could easily have picked someone else and played Michalanney in defence.

A few good performances but honestly was a comprehensive loss. Hopefully some of it is down to a lack of finals experience.

I think next year we obviously need to get rankine back in the midfield, develop rachele as a midfielder, keep developing draper and Curtin as mids and we will get better. I would also stop wasting time developing edwards in the backlines and start developing him as a midfielder. I don't think soligo and berry are the future (even Laird looked better in the midfield tonight rather than those two.

Peatling and Cumming deserve extra criticism from us...

They played 2 finals last year with GWS and were paid to be 'ready made' players... NOT sh*t the bed fumbly frauds like they were tonight...

Not trusting Curtin, Milera or ANB or even Pedlar etc with one CBA from Nicks was criminal coaching...

Not even trying a proper lock down job on Naicos was criminal coaching.

Our forwards not even trying to play in front all night was absolutely dumb and again, poor coaching.

Really, you just saw 0 tactics from us, like absolutely nothing you could say 'we tried this'.... :drunk:
