I’ve been pretty critical of Nicks over the last couple of years

But I think it’s probably okay to acknowledge what we’re doing well, as well as what we’re not doing well as a team. Yeah going defensive was shit, but our defence did damn well to restrict them to what they scored from so many I50s

Yeah our mids couldn’t get their hands on the ball, but I think that was just Dawson and Soligo having shockers (and Rankine not really impacting in the middle), rather than any tactical problems

Record against top 8 teams is 1-2, not great so far but there’s green shoots + room to improve. Whether we do improve (mainly tactically) is another question, admittedly
One of those top 8 results was the Rankine free kick game as well. We also put 161 on against Essendon who since then are conceding 70ish points a game and are the only team to put on 100+ against the best defense in the league so far, Carlton.

The Crows are a good team this season and the last people coming to terms with that seem to exist in a bubble on this board.

TBF Nicks couldn't do much about the Milera kick into the corridor - which would've likely been against all instructions at that point, and then Laird's idiotic scoop.
The Crows entire gameplan revolves around moving the ball across the ground to open up options ahead of the ball, so that Milera kick would've been to instruction (see the First Crack analysis on previous page). Port just defended it well and teased Milera enough to go for the kick and unfortunately it was a fraction of a second too late.

Depends how you classify "good". I think we're an okay team. We look good when it's on our terms but go to water when it's not. Probably going to play a final but still a chance to miss. I don't classify that as "good" with the current list.

He could stop picking guys that consistently shit the bed in big games…

And yet Nicks worried about the points Essendon scored against us and has modified our gameplan.

What do you think of the change of tactics against Port in the last 13 mins?

We are beyond an 'okay' team this season and given we just won a game without winning any key stats, that would refute your 2nd sentence. It's fine to praise a team playing well after 9 rounds, sitting 5th and top 2 or 3 in all key stats for the modern game. If our fortunes change by later in the season then so be it, but I don't live in the future and can only go on what's in front of me now.

There is not one stat you could look at this year and go 'yep, just an okay team' and we haven't played any of West Coast, Richmond or Melbourne.

Oh cmon. No one is saying our defence sucked, what we are saying is Nicks stupid change almost cost us the game.

Had Port took their chances we lose pure and simple. Had Rioli played we lose.

Our midfield was getting flogged, how many variations did we run through there? Try anything different? How about running a tag?

And if Rankine had got the free and goaled against the Suns we’d have won. To quote Rowe, “ifs, buts and candy nuts”

‘Had Port taken their chances’ you know why they couldn’t? Because of our defence being great. So why is no-one saying our defence won us the game (admittedly in spite of Nicks)?

Running Peatling with Butters is the only positive midfield change I think we could’ve made for the whole game, which we didn’t do

Is anyone actually criticising our defence so not sure what point you are making?

Port missed set shots, they missed shots in the corridor. We didn’t, the stats show that.

They had a lot more chances than us, because of our coaching and our midfield. That’s why some posters aren’t excited about holding on against a shit team missing forwards who got flogged by 90 points the week before.

Point is, much easier to be negative than positive on here. We definitely have a lot of areas in our game that imo will put us in good stead for good results, just because they aren’t talked about doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be

Nicks could well continue to stand in the way, though, but there’s stuff to be excited about

I think people forget that Port inflated a heap of those stats after we had largely controlled the ball for a few minutes until the Milera kick with about 4min left. Before that they barely had a sniff.

If either of Dawson or Rankine play well during those first 3 quarters the game was over anyway, that’s what kept Port in the game.

Agree with this, whilst there was a lot of areas I was not happy with on the weekend - a lot of the stats became heavily skewed in the last 10-15 minutes of the game when we appeared to shut down.

I think Collingwood and Brisbane are great. Hawthorn and Bulldogs are good. Us, Geelong, GWS and Gold Coast are okay. Essendon, St Kilda and Fremantle are average. The rest are crap with some pure trash right at the bottom.
