So surely Smith, Burgess, Laird (inj) are three of the outs, who’s the 4th?

Ned? Schoenberg? We know it’s not Dowling
Ned was sub wasn't he?

Hopefully Schoenberg at least gets some midfield time before we make the decision to jettison him

I’m talking the 23, so Ned would be included in that

Boggles the mind that we haven’t yet given Schoenberg much of a midfield chance, even though I’m not the most bullish on his prospects currently

No-one's mentioned Himmelberg. Is he any chance of playing? Surely he can put on the Neville 'Rocky' Roberts headgear and inspire the team to greatness.
Himmelberg is the sort of player who opponents can get slack on and he'll pop up with a couple of goals.
He also gives us better structure & assists Fog getting a worse matchup.

Nicks must surely be feeling the pressure at this point to start playing the youg guys, and playing them in the position they were recruited for. The 'external' noise around this is getting louder and louder.

Jimmy Bartel on AA last night was the latest on this - reckons the Tiges right before their premiership year did a recalibration between the recruiters and the coaches, to identify and refocus on the roles the players were brought in to play. Exactly what we need at this point, regardless of what our mathematical final chances are.

Imagine there needing to be outside pressure to force a coach sitting 4-8-1 whose team hasn't made the finals for 7 seasons to play young players in the positions they were drafted for

Maybe that's why he's been so aggro about being dropped? Worried he won't hit it and then it's likely career over.
It sucks to see it as he's been such a good player for us. The cliff has come though.

We're terrible at seeing it coming too. Or maybe we do and just ignore it, but we very rarely seem to have anyone retire with a bit left in the tank.

David Mackay may have been one of the few over the last few years who called time on his own career before he completely went over the edge.

We're already starting to see it with Laird now too. Has lost that little burst he used to have.

Can we call up Jason Torney for Smith? Amazing the difference in how each has been handled over the years. Says a lot about where our club is right now.

When did we start doing smart things like training at night at the ground we're playing on? And did we still slip over every 5 seconds?
We've done at least one session on AO before a home game for a while now. MCG even allows us on there for a training session before games there these days too.

I was the opposite, Kick and throw left handed but write and bat right handed.

Could never work out which hand to hold the tennis racket in :p
I had two forehands I would swap hands depending on where the ball was - I was atrocious- the school partnered me up with Mark Woodforde so he wouldn’t wipe the doubles comp.

How many players actually retire on their own terms though? It's the best salary they will ever earn, most are not giving it up easily unless they absolutely have to.

I've heard people like Dale Thomas talk about it, the club usually tap you on the shoulder and hint that either you retire or we are delisting you. So even when a player 'retires', it's rarely on their terms.

Laird is not over the edge though, if he retired this year it would be with something left in the tank. North could do worse than Laird if they wanted an experienced head for a couple of seasons (far better than what they currently have with Shiels).

my wife does everything right handed but throw, when she plays tennis, she uses both hands so you never what is coming

Retiring on your own terms is for elite stars that have brought success to the club

So not Brodie Smith

Well that's fairly harsh. Are you saying someone like Nick Riewoldt didn't deserve to go out on his own terms because they never won a flag?

One is a 5x AA, one is not.

Nah. Let's move Jones to defense for starters. No point destroying a kid's confidence when he's miles off being ready.

Nw - Zac Taylor? This I can get behind.
I'm happy with changes. The precise players don't matter greatly. My post has a major theme of change and the peril of not doing so. I want the club and coaches to really interrogate their overarching strategy of building a better team.

With our season over in a premiership sense, we can utilise 10 games towards that objective. 10 competitive AFL games!! What an amazing coaching opportunity!! Let's no waste this by looking at week to week results. Exploring the list more deeply must be part of this.

P.s in a contrarian view of this week only, negating Heeney and Co in the midfield would be helpful. I think Taylor as a mid could have a harder time than a half back flanker like Ryan. But that's just my opinion.😁
