There are 8 rounds to go, he is currently on 292 games so add 8 and he gets to 300. If we qualify for finals, the finals game becomes his 300th if the club decides he misses the West Coast game.

Not sure what you are going on about - it is now a 23 game season, not 22.

I’m saying he needs a 2 week rest, which requires either a top 4 finish or finals win. The list I originally responded to mentioned a multi-week rest and my response said he won’t even get 2 weeks. You then went on a different tangent.

Nicks when Murphy shows nothing for the 118th game in a row:

Hopefully Taylor gets a full game.

Any coach that isn't a moron would sub Smith but who knows what Nixxy will do...
More like the selection panel tied and gagged Nicks so he couldn’t pick him.

Wow, did not think there was the slightest hope of that happening. But again, Murphy delivered exactly what everyone would expect of him, why do we keep selecting him instead of giving a kid a crack.
If the coaches are to have any credibility they had to pull the trigger on bringing Taylor in.

I can only hope last week was "He does well in the SANFL, let's see how he does in the AFL in the midfield" move with Murphy and they saw that the results do not translate at all.

We have potentially self sabotaged our season by giving Murphy those two games against Gold Coast and Hawthorn where we lost by a goal.
Let's not get too hyperbolic.

Our main forwards kicking 0.9 against Hawthorn and bigger issue.

And the fix was in against the Sunnyboys...

I hope he is not sub and gets a chance at a decent role

Look at Curtin with a defined role.

Yeah don’t get too excited.

A couple of single digit possession games from Taylor and he’ll probably be back

We limped Ricciuto to break Ben Hart's (then ) games record tally and arguably cost ourselves an elimination final win (Massie on Franklin not withstanding)

Roo was a complete liability in that final game - ended up with half dozen possessions? If that?

Every era gets more professional, the standards now are completely different compared to the 90s and early 2000s. You would hope that those standards also make it into selection meetings.

Please tell me Murphy is out of contract end of this season

Surely that's done for him

Congrats on getting 100+ AFL games but time is over

He is, but we have a first and then about 3 third round picks. We’ve got Murphy, Tex, Crouch, Schoey, Burgess, Smith and Bond all out of contract. You’d think at least 2 are retained.

I was sure someone told me Murph has a contract for next year.

Of that group I'd retain Burgess and Bond.

It’s insanity bringing him in and then dropping him when he delivers exactly as expected. We know he’s seasoned and we can bring him in at any time and he’s going to deliver what he always has. Same with Smith, was horrible when it mattered against Lions and Hawks. We know what he can do, just wasting opportunities to get games into kids.

Let’s ignore our coaches depth chart for a moment (which has IMO had enough questionable-in-retrospect calls in past years to suggest it’s not perfect). Do you personally think Murphy plays the seventh fiddle forward role better than Taylor would? I’d argue that, at worst, their output is about equal. As you said before, there is such little difference between outputs for this role that it is essentially swapping deck chairs on the titanic.

Then why not give the role to a player with an even slightly better chance of improving and locking down a long-term career? There’s four years and 102 games difference between Taylor and Murphy. When their output is similarly low, you can’t ignore such glaring difference in potential and ceiling. Mind you, this also applies to Draper and (to a lesser extent) Pedlar. To reward SANFL form though I think Taylor deserves another crack.

It's hard to ignore the depth chart because the depth chart is what determines if you have a career or not. Equally, if a player is capable of living up to their precieved talent, they would have blown past the stuck in the depth chart phase once an opportunity presents itself. Effectively, it's an audit if the talent is legitimate and the prospect is made of the right stuff, and it is a glaring demerit on Taylor's career.

Game count and years served make stuff all difference here, once you've had 3 presessons, as by that point a prospect should be able to hold a best 22 spot without issues (and beat out the solid citizens of the AFL world). They're important for the next step, and going from a guy who's a role player in a best 22 to someone who's a pivotal part of the team system. We had an example of this play out two years ago with a prospect that was stuck, when Worrell got an opportunity due to an ACL and effectively shipped Doedee off to Brisbane in his 10 game stint. The game's and additional preseasons Doedee has pushed through didn't matter because they don't matter when against realised talent at this stage.

Now, you do hit one point on the head why I predicted Taylor's inclusion a week ago, which is rewarding SANFL form. This is a shuffle the deck chairs selection and we gain nothing out of this in the short or long term, so this became the one rare instance where it matters. Taylor has shown us who he is as a footballer in our system.

PS: added in our system as we can't rule out a come to Jesus moment like Ben Keays/Tyson Stengle.
