Definitely Hinge and Borlase out. Soligo touch and go, might survive if he's able to play given the other injuries.

Butts definitely in. Bond likely, Dowling possible if Soligo is not good to go. Personally I expect it'll just be Butts and Bond for Borlase and Hinge.

Should be some consideration of Draper, fitness permitting. I suspect he's a while off though. Edwards is the other option but not sure he's better than the other available choices.
This is the week to debut Edwards. At least his size can match NWM in bursts. Otherwise it's Dawson which is the best match up...but I don't want to do it. Nank and Edwards can match him.

Are you nicks?
Throwing a kid to the wolves?
Peatling is the match up.

Soligo isn't near his best but he's also no longer in the midfield rotation and doing about as much as others playing his role as a non key position forward in our forward line.

Those that want to drop him so he can get fit, how does that happen that wouldn't be the case at AFL level? Feel like he's just as likely to build his fitness in the AFL side as he would in the seconds. So the question becomes whether we'd get more from Edwards/Dowling in his role - not sure we would.

--------------

Butts in for Borlase (who is a fantastic 4th string KPD at present, unlucky in a way).

Hinge to go out, unsure of a direct replacement.

If Fogarty is fit, he should return.

Could those two swap and shuffle it around? If not, one of Dowling or Edwards.

And if not a shuffle around, Maley should go (1 goal and one smart assist is a solid return) but we're then back at who takes the ruck minutes when McAndrew is off. Almost need to have him rest during general play, use Thilthorpe for that and have McAndrew come on for every center bounce.

I think what Mitchell and Hawthorne have done with Gunston the last 18-24 months has been revelation. He generally stays in the F50 and uses his forward craft to lead expertly and get maximum shots at goal.

I think this is exactly how we can and should be using Tex if we’re going to pick him as the higher up the ground he plays (and not withstanding his generally excellent field kicking) the more he’s exposed as a defensive liability.

Can Nicks develop (or copy) in match tactics to utilise the unique skills of a player like Tex?

And ditto for Kossie at Melbourne as a mid-forward player as a template for Rankine.

Play half forward isn’t going to give him the fitness base to return to the midfield, playing games as an SANFL mid would

He has played 5 weeks now.
It has less to do with fitness and all to do with performance.
He just isn't performing, reward players who are.

I wish this criteria was held more strongly by the club.
Performance and accountability instead of gold passes for favourites

He isn't performing in the last 2 weeks as a forward? He only had 65% TOG Thursday night as he rolled his ankle and had 12 disposals, 1 goal and 2 GA.

Get Soligo back into the SANFL midfield, he'll be like a new recruit in the back half of the season. Dowling the perfect replacement, will find more of the footy as a high forward, can kick goals, and if we need him to go on ball/wing he can do that too.

Edwards for Hinge, can shuffle with Nank to organise who plays where. Personally, I'd love to see Dawson, Edwards and even Milera combine to fill a mid/back rotation.

I think we need to go past Laird but what's the point even hoping for it.

Pedlar, Draper, Soligo can all get 3 more SANFL games minimum before coming in (more injuries notwithstanding). Dowling and Edwards get a minimum of 3 to show what they've got.

He has barely done anything all year

Reward someone who is performing, how long do you keep carrying him for ?
He looks to be getting further off the pace each week, so what we're doing isn't working.

I wonder now after his ankle tweak, if we give him a week off to recover ?

Our does Nicks just keep doubling down on playing under done players again
We know he loathes giving a young guy an opportunity in case he impresses

We need him in the midfield and not forward, if his fitness hasn't started to improve to play in the midfield then we shouldn't be playing him anymore.

I would agree in principle. but Tex is not as fast on the lead as Gunston, so wouldn't be as effective. His opponents catch him too often.

Tex also does his best work by roaming all over the forward line.

I prefer a non-stagnant structure.

It’s also where TT is at his most dangerous, you want to be giving him as much room to work and lead as possible.

One advantage of our tall forwards are they are good both up the field and playing deep as well, so you don’t want to limit them.

Ok but you say that but if we truly do reward performance, there are still a handful of players behind Soligo most weeks. Last week certainly Jones, ROB, Pedlar and Bond were behind him. This week we lose a player with injury (Hinge) and already have a forecasted move of Butts in for Borlase. Taylor was certainly worse than Soligo on Thursday night so we have to pull the trigger with him first before we start dropping Soligo.

Taylor was on par with Soligo.
I'm talking about the year so far

They weren't on par really on par though. Soligo had a consistently okay game, no big mistakes, a solid 5/10. Taylor had quite a bit of a mare. Over the course of the whole year I would say they are right on par with each other. Taylor is definitely not league's ahead of Soligo and vice versa.

The difference for me lies in their best and what they are capable of. I can't see Taylor playing much better than he currently is right now, I'd argue we're getting his maximum. He makes coach killing decisions a few times each game. He is the king of deferring pressure to the next player. Soligo does that far less if at all, he's just struggling to get his hands near the ball, but he still gets it more than Taylor.
