It's not that hard mate.

Prioritise talented youth over fading seniors; both in selection and positioning.

Its still a balancing act. You cant **** off a 20 disposal a game player for a 6 possession first gamer because of talent. Not if you are desperate to win this week to keep your finals chances alive. Got to remember we were playing two young players for the first 7 games who struggled to reach 10 disposals when we would could have easily selected other players who would have easily got those numbers and contributed more to those particular games.

Nothing wrong with selecting for the future but you simply cant expect to win every game if thats going to be what you want to do. At some point you end up facing teams with their least experienced player on the field having 40 games. Cant compete and beat those teams with 6 or 7 players with 30 or under games. Just the reality of AFL. Yes we have to get them there but again at some point we have to play players who we have gotten there to give us a better shot of winning.

We know which players it WONT be - and we'll never know which players it MIGHT be if we don't actually give them the opportunity.

yes we have a clue, and im 100% certain we wont make the gf this year. But the club has always indicated it was a finals or bust year. The club selected Curtin and Draper while pursuing this. At some point they were going to bring in experienced players due to injury. We all knew it was going to happen. Being mad about it finally happening is overlooking the fact that this voids all of Nicks excuses and he either sinks or swims. Selecting Berry, Butts and Fogarty removes injuries as an excuse and the dropping of Draper removes the inexperienced teenagers trope.

Stop talking bullshit. The club has DEFINITIVELY said one game at a time. No one has said "Finals or bust" except supporters.

But experience wins flags, guys - just ask 1997 premiership Crows Andrew Jarman, Chris McDermott, and Tony McGuinness.
Well, it does, just look at Collingwood, Brisbane and Geelong in the last three years. It's just that theirs still perform or performed at a high level whereas Smith is the complete opposite.

With respect, in a rebuild I pick let's-develop-youth into AFL players to win games, especially by playing them where they have performed so well to be recruited by the Club in the first place.

After that, win enough games, we play Finals knowing who is up to AFL standard and who not.
Nicks has had 5 years and 7 games to do this, but still does not know right now that Smith is not going to be a part of a team that wins enough games to play Finals.
Nicks needs, he has needed, desperately to find out which of Draper, Curtin, Dowling, Jones, Ryan, Edwards and others will make it. The only way to know is to play them.

We know what Berry brings. Draper will be a part of our midfield future, hopefully well after Nicks is a bad memory.
I loved the bloke, but Smith is cooked. Over his hill.
It's ridiculous Selection.

I think Im starting to get what hes saying. At this point of a failed rebuild, Nicks has no need or reason to think of the future. He needs to think of his next paycheck. Make finals and the gravy keeps flowing.

If only he understood, after 5 years of this exact same philosophy, his selections arent even close to assuring him a finals birth.

But we dont win games doing it the way hes always done it. Whats to lose?

I’m normally fine with the vast majority of our selections (but picking Murphy for GC was terrible) and find that a lot of our board melt at the drop of a hat.

But those changes for this week are horrible. I’d have dropped Taylor or Nankervis before Draper and bringing in Smith over blooding someone like an Edwards is just terrible.

Milera has always been way over rated for some reason
Not sure he is overrated he is just played on the potential he has. Sunk cost fallacy perhaps but he is the player that we've decided to invest games into independent of short term output. His injuries are the only thing that has made this policy unrewarding.

The clubs made it known since 2023 its now got finals as an objective. Nicks openly has admitted this several times, so has Roo. What makes you think this year its...

'well we are going to develop our shiny new toys all year and if we finish 9th its no problem because next year we will be better for it.'

The lack of games for younger players was always on the agenda with minimal injuries and an objective of chasing finals. Im actually surprised we selected both Draper and Curtin considering we know what Nicks is like. A leopard doesnt change his spots. Nicks did the same selection shit in 2023. Tried to do the same last year until he couldnt with injuries. Why is this bullshit to you.

Anyways I think everyone has missed my point. Im not actually defending Nicks. Im actually highlighting how all these selection decisions only voids every excuse the club throws out in its defense of Nicks. While its disappointing because we all know its throwing development out the window we now know Nicks has no where to go excuse wise, he has to live and die purely on his coaching ability, and we all know that ****ing sucks.

Matthew's desperation selections lead to losses and then eventually he starts picking the team better after the season is done
And then forgets everything at the start of the next season

Have you heard ONE person from the club ever say "Finals or bust"?
