Re: Bye Bye Priority Pick

Firstly, well done Freo....towled us in the first which set you up nicely for the win. (without Pav too ).

It's a hard situation where yes you want to win the games to show any detractors your teams true worth and piss off a few op supporters but at the same time I'm hoping to have pick 3 or at worst pick 4 which may be the case. Different again for yourselves as you have the opportunity for a priority pick which I'd love for the Power also.

The way I see it is that you / us need to set ourselves up for the future not just next year... therefore any benefit we can get out of this years draft should be taken. Just my opinion but it's hard as you don't want to be seen as losing a winning culture but really that hasn't been there much this year for either club so strengthen the teams we have now (which aren't really that far off - both teams lost many close games this year) and build for strong futures over the next 5 or so years. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Yep, It will provide excitement if we can knock

WC to the spoon
Saints , Tigers , out of the eight
Swans , Pies out of the top 4.

We should aim to end the year with an unbeaten run so that next year teams will be actually not looking forward to playing us.

Absolutely Rip. I agree with this. We'll still get a top 5 pick so theres no need for people to get their knickers in a knot...

Good post, great to see a Port supporter making a positive post on our board for a change. :thumbsu:

Some deluded people here. Gibbs has been played way out of position so that he learns the defensive aspect of his game. Carlton knew he could rack up possessions straight away but as he stood he was a Dal Santo in the making with no accountability, the blues needed more so they constantly sent him to back pockets or to tag opposition stars.

On the subject of the priority pick and draft etc. It is great to get a run on at the end of the year yes... However, of all the teams to stuff up a golden chance to get young talent we are the favourites.

Now before the your not a true fan morons chime in, I'm merely pointing out that i dont want us to be copping more crap in two years time from moron eagles fans etc. that we blew it when we had the chance to pull off some good solid youthful recruiting. Also, with these new teams coming in, we could be in for some very dark years if we don't get our trading and drafting right at the end of this year.

Just dont want to see the same old mistakes. It's good to get a win yes, but i hope its more important to build a future because short term has been our biggest downfall in the clubs recent history

Why do you care so much what moron weagle fans think...as you said, they`re morons:)

I don`t see how you can think that we`ll be critised for winning games and not being so shyte that we miss out on a PP.

I`ll admit that before the bouncedown of last weeks game against the Dees I was secretly hoping for a gallant defeat to keep us on track for a PP... but as soon as the game starts I can only support Freo, scream abuse at the umps and opposition players and hope and expect that we are good enough to fight it out and get over the line.

I know it was only Melbourne but we are good enough to beat any team on our day. I honestly believe that...we`ve shown that sporadically over the last couple of years. We have the cattle, albeit without a lot of depth.

The problem has always been between the ears with the players which IMO relates to no confidence in game plans and lack of responsibility given to individuals, and a lack of unity/teamwork on the field.

This all comes down to coaching and culture within the club.

We now have a coaching group who won`t accept anything less than 100% effort.

We have a match committee who between them have fairly recent playing and coaching experience from several footy clubs aswell as experienced individuals who have been around a bit.

Noone at the club would put instilling belief, pride, work ethic and a will to win above securing a PP (which has been mentioned is a gamble anyway)!!

I would much rather Mark Harvey and Co. get the CURRENT playing group playing for eachother(shepharding, blocking), create some cohesion with our ruckman and midfielders which equates to a better clearance rate, improve our forward setups which will help the scoring efficiency and to try players in different positions (as they have been) to see if they deserve a spot on our list next year...

AND TO WIN - I`m sure any player would go into the preseason a bit more excited and enthusiastic with a few more wins and excitement around the club.

Also, I believe guys like Warnock, Mundy etc will have a better chance of staying if they think we`re heading in the right direction rather than playing like crabs to get an 18 yo who may or may not be a handy player next year:thumbsu:

Totally agree I have felt the same way for the last month.
I will probably spend the week leading up to each game for the rest of the year slightly hoping that we loose, then spend every game day angry that we didn't or happy that we did.
Isn't footy strange.

In the end it isn't going to matter if we finish 15th 14th or 13th, get a PP or not. We will still get quality mid even at 13th (hopefully Hartlett), but most important is that we play as a team.

Teams win Premierships not players.
Look at Geelong, we all carry-on about how good their players are, but I personally believe it has more to do with them playing as a powerful unit.

Agree 100%! What good is having the talent if they don`t play for eachother..

Both WA clubs had first round priority picks in 2001. In effect they netted Ashley Sampi & Graham Polak. Hardly 2 superstars.

We'll get one this year (we are crap), but if we manage to somehow win 3 more games and lose pick 19 or 20 in the process I certainly won't be getting upset. I'd much rather have a team capable of winning than one which isn't and adding a player drafted at pick 20 to it in the hope that player turns out to be a superstar.

You only need 2 more wins to lose the PP.

I was feeling very meh after the win against Melbourne, it meant nothing and we didnt play that well...would have gladly taken the loss.

The win against Port was very satisfying since there was no Pav and players like Scham, Peake, Scotty, Head etc really stepped up, add the fact it was a way from home and we beat Port in the clearances...very very nice.

As for the PP, will gladly take it if we get it but will be very happy with the wins if we dont.

I really despise the power, fully expect them to tank the rest of the season and finish below us.

For a club that made the grand final last year and put in the most disgraceful match day celebrations I have ever seen (Prelim final) it would be heartening to see them finish down the bottom the following season if it wasn't for the fact they are screwing us over to do it.

Melbourne and West Coast are rubbish, we lack the cattle...The bloody power are likely to be up in the 8 next year.

Dont believe the Power are gonna climb so quickly. Their key ingredients are coming to an end. You can't win matches without decent key position players.

They have little to no good tall forwards, tall backs or rucks. Westoff is good against us. But thats about it. Most Power supporters are unsure about him, Alipate Carlisle is also on the fence whether he'll make it or not.

Toby Thurstans, Damon White are playing key posts and Tredrea is coming close to the end. Brogan is old as is Lade.

The talls department is sadly lacking down at the Power.

I'm not so sure about that.

They've only used 30 players this year so they've had the 3rd most settled side of the year. Obviously they can't blame injuries and if you're doing that badly and still can't find anyone past your top 30 worthy of a game I'd say your list is not in great shape.

Hopefully 2007 was just an aberration and they'll be spending a few years down the bottom. Couldn't happen to a nicer club.

Always believed Port were not that good a team in 07 and got lucky to just scrape into the finals and make it to the grand final.

Looks like we will end up with natinui now :(
Melbourne will take the vic guy who dominated the carnival (cant remember name )
Eagles will take Rich

I still think Natinui is overrated great athleticism but lacks football skills
pretty much the same type of player as gilmore.

I certainly won't be disappointed if we take Naitanui, especially if Warnock goes home. Naitanui and Gilmore would be on par at present, but NN is just a kid with truckloads of upside.

He's ready to contribute next season, 5 minutes a quarter in the ruck to give Sandi a break then 15 minutes a quarter at half forward would be a good introduction.

Really want the PP, as Rosich has said we need to re-generate through the draft. An extra (almost) first round pick would be great for us, people say we are not guaranteed a good player with the pick but I look at what we did with our last draft and it gives me faith in Smart, also looking at the eagles last draft, they have three players from it that will be more than handy.

Is this right? we win the derby and we lose the PP?

If so that sucks, short term i want us to thump the weagles, long term it could be detrimental to us. Most of us are in agreement that we (if it was possible in one year) need to delist or trade up to 12 players including retirees. Our best chance of replacing these with good to great players is with higher draft picks.

A smart Frep supporter :thumbsu:
A bonus draft pick far outweighs a couple of meaningless last season wins over bottom teams.

Late season wins don't guarantee momentum into next year.
