They changed it because the Crows won the flag from Fifth after losing their first final away by 50 odd points.

Either you play a finals series like playoffs in NBA (in a 3 match series) or you play elimination matches where the top seed plays the lowest seed and whoever loses is eliminated.

With the pre-finals bye now in force there is no excuses for players being tired or needing a break.

There was also an upset in 1992 with Bulldogs beating pies, which gave Eagles entry into the GF qualifying match against Geelong in wk 2. We won an got a week off, instead of having to play each week.

Like most major changes to the system of V/AFL it's all come off the back of an interstate side dominating or potentially getting an unfair benefit (available to all but only changed afterwards)

Big problem with the older system was that you can win in the 1st week then in the 2nd week you can end up playing a lower placed team that lost in the 1st week, and sometimes the VFL gives the other team home ground advantage.

Im talking about no second chances. The huge problem we have with the current system is you can be the highest ranked team, win your qualifying final at home and then still have to play the grand final against the same opponent you have already beaten at their home ground.

The old system was shit as well because it was shifty in regards to 5-6 on the ladder purely because the AFL wanted to keep the double chance. The only fair finals are knockout finals.

If the AFL are worried about reduced revenue due to less games then play a series between 9-16 (bottom two teams still get first two picks) for their first round draft order.
