As compared to being a stand-alone (or near-stand alone) team somewhere in Victoria.

If the AFL 'pursuaded' us to base our reserves in Hobart it would only add further evidence to back the theory that they want us down there as a club permanently.

As for our current Ballarat/Werribee split, I reckon you'll find most North officials and supporters to be rather happy with the arrangement.

Playing lists are not going to increase as a result of this. For starters, not all AFL clubs would be involved.

Clubs would use their current senior and rookie lists. If additional players are required, they'll either be employed by the club as a VFL player (not on club list, can't play seniors), or top up players from lower level clubs will be used on temporary permits (as happens in the VFL currently).

The question with Port is if there is a reserves comp what happens to the Magpies side? Will it still have to be in the SANFL or will it leave and be the Power reserve side in a reserves competition. What there wont be is a PAFC AFL, PAFC AFL Reserves and PAFC SANFL Magpies team. This will be a massive shit sandwich for the SANFL and potentially for PAFC.

If we only have the AFL side and a reserve side that is essentially the SANFL Magpies we are pretty much already good to go, all we need to do is move our players at the other SANFL clubs over to the Magpies.

That 9 million dollar cash injection the AFL gave the SANFL to pass on tells us you cant afford it. SANFL will never let the magpies leave either so you'd become a 3 team club. try that on for size.

Thats not the part that greatly concerns me. Its the dividend that MUST be shared with the SANFL clubs. They wont want to part with the cash required to fund the reserves teams trips interstate.

And I dont hate Port Adelaide. Well no more than anyone else in Adelaide does, but Id go for them over the Crows any day.

PAFC reserves wouldn't be the Magpies, and wouldn't play in prison bars. How would that go down with the 'old time'/traditionalist fans?

As for affording it...Remember, if you played in the reserves *instead of* the SANFL, your revenue would probably be cut significantly. ( I doubt an AFL reserves team would make the kind of money an SANFL team would ).

The problem is they know the current system in Vic is broken. So teams want to win, some teams only care about developing their kids, and the rest are in an uneasy balance between those two goals.

They can't continue to allow Geelong and Collingwood to field stand alone teams and not allow other teams to do so.

So they have 3 choices.

Drag Geelong and Collingwood back to the 'norm' and force them into arrangements with VFL teams.

Accept the current plans of Richmond & Essendon (and doubtless more clubs will follow) which will further damage the integrity of the competition.

Allow a seperate reserves comp for those Vic clubs that want it (and can pay their own way), which would essentially be a season of practice matches.


As for the non-Vic clubs....If they want to fly teams here to play, good luck to them, but I can't see why we'd want the reserves to travel so much we'd pay for it.

I really, really hope the reserves can come back, and at least some games I wouldn't mind seeing an entire AFL reserves (I live in SA) but even just the Victorian clubs would be great (possibly even Fitzroy? Though extremely unlikely). I don't like what the AFL has become and have been losing a little interest after viewing replays in the years gone by, so hopefully a reserves comp would bring back the real game we used to know at least in some form. Playing at the old grounds would be a bonus but would also help that cause. I really hope this can happen and soon if the main game continues in the direction its heading. Not only that, it would be more competition to follow, at least for me.

On the same note what does this mean for the VFL? I don't really follow it but wouldn't want to see it die. It always got through in the 80's and earlier though right?

Whatever happens, keep us updated. I'm actually half excited at this without getting my hopes too high.

A national reserves league would be great.. and a lot more interesting that watching the VFL.

Having collingwood v carlton reserves as a curtain raiser to saturday night carlton v collingwood would be great and bring in early crowds for a great watch. Each national reserves team could be alligned with a few VFL/TSL/NEAFL ect teams to get their top up players from, the rest would be their senior list and rookies playing how they want to play with their own structures.

It may cost a little extra, but i believe it will bring in extra ratings as people more people would watch the national reserves league as it has more relevance than sandringham v the northern blues.

Edit* Adding in a Tasmanian team and potentially a NT thunder team would be great to see as well.. not sure how possible that is however. Then if we want to say add tasmania into the AFL, they would already have a structure and culture.

Grounds shouldn't be too much of a problem. The grounds where still played in the 90's, there's no reason why they can't still play there, unless they've torn down the stands or their too run down etc. Windy Hill, Whitten Oval, Vic Park, surely Princess Park. Not sure about Moorabin, heard the stand there's run down or something. Melbourne could possibly be able to use the MCG and prehaps the other few clubs could feed off a couple of the other grounds i.e North off Princess Park or Whitten, Richmond prehaps the G too, not sure about the hawks. If only they kept Waverley.
