I think I'm going to get slammed for this, but I'm prepared to cop it to generate some discussion.

This year we are headed to September, and depending on how the cards fall with the draw, Essendon etc. we may get lucky and end up going relatively deep (semi or even a prelim is not beyond the realms of possibility). I know we rested Maric once against the GC and it seemed to bite us, but GWS are a lot weaker, finals are secure, and we are a much better side these days.

Good sides sometimes do this, we have seen the cats and pies do it in the past. What would be people's thoughts on giving certain players the week off against GWS?

Obviously we couldn't rest all of these guys, but some names who could maybe do with a week off include:

Maric
Newman
Riewoldt
Vlastuin
Morris
Rance
Chaplin
Jackson
Foley
Grigg

Thoughts?

If Sydney beats Geelong at skilled the day before, I would be happy to rest a few players as we would be destined to finish 5th or 6th IMO which would mean playing port or essendon which I am happy to play either.
If however Sydney had lost the day before I would still be going flat out at GWS leaving nothing to chance, as it would still be quite possible top 4 would be on the cards the following week.

Newman, Maric, Vlastuin would be the three I wouldn't be unhappy to see 'rested'.
As for Grigg/Foley they can be managed as the sub.
The others should be fine.

I don't like the idea of bringing in Mcbean for one game. This is not the time for that. We need to be prepared for the finals and the GWS are no pushover at Skoda either

juss, I think it makes sense to rest a couple in that game.

Maric is the obvious one who's been having ongoing trouble, so I think he should get week to freshen up before the finals. I think Vlaustin could probably do with a rest to freshen up a bit as well.

Aside from those two, I think maybe one other who is battling a niggle or two who hasn't missed a game in a while. Any more than 2-3 would be a bit of a worry though.

Play our best team unless someone is injured. Different if you're on top of the ladder going into the last round and clear by a game.

Would seriously hate to see a loss to someone like GWS now after we've started beating teams we should beat and some who we aren't expected to beat.

Rest maric. Vickery is in good form and orro is very serviceable. The big man is vital to our finals chances and has been carrying a massive load for 18 months. He was shot by september last year and hasnt really got back to his best form since. One week off then a couple of weeks to get him cherry ripe for finals.

Don't play around with form. Unless there is an injury that is going to keep a player out then I'd be playing everyone all the way through.

Maric the only one i would consider. Otherwise consistency is the key for us. All guns a blazing

2 BIG guys against GWS if they are feeling the pinch may need a rest for a tune up for finals - mullet and chappy, BIG O can have another crack and perhaps a farewell game and this also slots grimes back in as big Dave Astbury can hold down CHB/FB coz we know Rance will take Cameron.

Don't flirt with form.

Exactly. This gets thrown around in footy circles a lot, for good reason.

How many times have we seen a team rest players only to get knocked off cos of the message it sends (that the opponent is a gimme) or lose the following week cos everyone is a bit off?

Someone carrying an injury is different, but resting players just to freshen them up? Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

rest big Ivan for big O
wrap newman in cotton wool for a week and bring in McDonough, deserves a run.
McBean should just keep dominating at coburg, dont want to bring him in and lose all confidence (griffiths)
