Review Rewatched Matches Thread

Well last night I re-watched our famous finals win over Geelong at Simmonds Stadium this year.

No Michael Johnson and an underdone Luke McPharlin meant that Zac Dawson and Lee Spurr had to step up, and boy did they.

Unfortunately though, Zac Dawson will be remembered for the 3 stupid things that he did that day, such as being reported before the ball was even bounced, choosing to double fist a ball into the path of an opposition player rather than taking an uncontested mark, and making front on contact to Joel Selwood thus giving away a silly free kick in the process.

Lee Spurr on the other hand had 10 marks with 29 possessions and a goal as a rebounding half back flanker, which goes to show how much pressure we were under from Geelong's ball carriers.

BOG for mine was Michael Barlow with 32 possessions and 3 goals, followed by Nat Fyfe with 25 touches and then David Mundy.

I also liked Tendai Mzungu's and Stephen Hill's games, whilst Danyle Pearce played his second great game in a row.

Our forwards struggled all night, as Pav's radar was off, plus he had to contend with Harry Taylor. Son-Son, Chris Mayne and Ballas worked hard for not a lot of result as Geelong's backline was excellent.

The best of the young brigade were Lachie Neale with 21 possies and Cam Sutcliffe with 18.

Sandi destroyed Vardy and Blicavs in the ruck with 31 hit outs to 13, whilst Zac Clarke had 19 hit outs of his own.

Ryan Crowley was yet again superb. After starting on Stokes he took Joel Selwood out of the game, and then took care of Stevie Johnson after he had a 22 possession quarter.

Lastly, why does umpire Shane McInerney have it in for us?

A game for the ages that one. If you were to put our top 20 victories in order, I believe 4-5 of them would be games against Geelong.
Always games of the highest standard.

Loved Sandi in the skid-lid tapping the pill down Hilly's and Micky B's throat for them to goal;power-precision-poetry!!
The prelim against Sydney is on Foxfooty at 11:30 this morning.

Being lucky enough to be at the game, this was only the second time I've watched the game. Such a great come back, they were really throwing everything at us and our young boys really stood up, infact they were the difference IMO. Such a great game.

Two matches in particular gnaw at my gut. Both losses.

Home game v Essendon - How we let them back in after half time and secondly, how much we had the ball deep forward in the last quarter but couldn't finish them. Hate the Bummers more than any other team and even knowing the result, I still wanted to kick my TV in after watching that replay last week.

Other match (the obvious) 2013 GF. Never felt like we were gonna win that after about 20 minutes watching live at the MCG. But after watching the replay a few times now, I can't believe how much we had the footy after the first quarter. If there was a butcher's medal - our boys would have taken it out easily. Gives real hope for 2014 though I reckon. We could never perform that poorly at the big dance again surely?

I worry that we may not make there again - such an even competition, and whist we've improved our list, so have others. A lot of our games were close results and hard-fought wins we grit through, and all year towards the end there was just a feeling of destiny and joy about it all.

I hope we can go round again next year - but if we don't make it, it won't be for lack of trying.

I still think we're on the way up now GB. Our best in 2013 was sublime. No team would've got much closer than Sydney did in the PF. So logically, if we have not yet peaked and also added a couple of extra cogs during trade time........ anything less than another GF could be seen as sub-par IMO. I think we're up to the challenge!

To be fair, Sydney were decimated by injury against us in the PF... They have Tippett, Tom Mitchell, Goodes, LRT, Shaw, a half-fit Rohan and that Buddy guy to come in from that game!

Just think how the Norf Melb supporters feel with all their close losses last season.

The Essendon game gets to me more than the grand final loss. The sum of our winning position we were in, the Essendon Saga and how McPharlin got taken out by Ryder. Really grinds my gears.

Okay, well now it's time to talk about the elephant in the room.

I watched the GF again yesterday.

I had no choice, as I just so happened to be watching Fox Footy at 2.30pm yesterday.

Anyway, there is no point going over old ground because we have analysed this one to death.

However, I do wish to add a couple of things that I haven't seen mentioned before.

1) Did we anticipate the subbing of Max Bailey half way through the 3rd quarter like the commentators did?

It looked like we subbed first, so was Zac Clarke subbed purely because Max Bailey was going to be?

Watching the game again I believe we should have kept Zac Clarke on because he was giving us a lot more than what Hayden Ballantyne was. Whilst it wasn't Zac's best game, and he did seem to struggle against Hale at times, Zac was at least giving us a much needed target up forward.

We got back to a 3 point deficit with Zac on the ground and once he went off the game was gone.

2) Our kick ins from them scoring a behind. They had Luke Hodge roaming loosely just forward of centre picking off our kick ins.

And we countered that strategy with what?

Clarkson and Co certainly did their homework on us that week. They left David Mundy alone to win the clearances and shut down Michael Barlow and Stephen Hill instead.

They tried to shut Nat Fyfe down but couldn't, but they at least made him work hard for his possessions.

Hawthorn also put physical pressure on our players, especially Crowley when they had the chance. I don't recall any of our players trying to be intimidating physically. The grand final is the game it's for, no tomorrow and next year's suspensions will look after themselves.

Suban was physical and Crowley did his job well. It's guys like Sutcliffe, Duffield and Clarke that needs more agro.

I was actually hoping for more from Pav and Sandilands in particular. We all know that Pav doesn't do it particularly well, but Sandi could have run amok.

Full compliment of midfielders though (and throughout the year the consensus amongst BF and the media at large seemed to be that they had one of if not the strongest and deepest midfield group in the comp) bar Mitchell who as a first year player wouldn't reasonably have been expected to play a big role anyway.

It's the main reason I'm not shitting myself just yet at the prospect of a Franklin led Swans, we comprehensively dismantled their midfield that night and I'm confident of similar dominance when we face them later this year :thumbsu:

I agree that on Prelim night no team in the league would have gotten closer, keeping in mind junk time goals and unbelievable inaccuracy (even by Freo standards) grossly flattered them in terms of the final margin.

Easy to argue that Zac shouldn't have been subbed, but it would not have been a good move to sub Ballantyne. It's not like he wasn't getting near it, and he's the sort of player that could have kicked 2-3 goals in the last quarter. Pearce was in the same boat.

I've long put the game behind me as a wasted chance. Or more appropriately, lots and lots of wasted chances.

Ballantyne's easy shot on goal, which somehow became an out on the full in the 3rd quarter did it for me. We had Hawthorn starting to doubt themselves at the time as well.

Pearce was very fumbley and arguably our second worse player out there, however he did score a very much needed goal when no one else seemed to be capable of kicking one.

Fyfe, Pav and Ballantyne just couldn't seem to kick goals for some reason that day.

Mind you, Buddy, Roughy and Delicious didn't seem to be able kick them either, whilst Gunston and Bruest couldn't miss.

Harry, Ballantyne put in his usual 120% and didnt stop trying and he is capable of turning a game ala the Richmond game.To sub him just didnt make any sense,if he kicks goals instead of points he is a hero.Clark gave nothing including a head ducking moment at a crucial part of the game.Just re that incident he deserved to be subbed

I watched the GF again a couple of weeks ago too.

I was pretty happy with our intensity for most of the match (skills were another story obviously) but that limp effort from Duffield on the goal line allowing Gunston to swivel and kick a goal was infuriating.

First he casually jogged back like he expected the ball to go over the goal line, then he half-heartedly stuck out one hand in a token attempt to spoil. Left me fuming, both live (right! in! front! of! me!) and after watching the replay. Completely unacceptable in the biggest game of your career where you should be attacking every contest like your life depends on it.

God I wish it had been Spurr in that contest, Gunston would still be trying to dislodge the goal post from his spine.

You guys are made of sterner stuff than I, will never be able to stomach watching a replay of that game.

I was regretting it during the first half. The two completely different interpretations of HTB depending on which jumper you were wearing made my blood boil all over again.

The umpiring was a bit more even in the 2nd half though and I was feeling much better after our 3rd qtr comeback... until Nicholls gave them that goal to kill our momentum right before the siren from their first forward entry in 15 minutes. Even after watching the replay I still can't figure out what that was for.

It took him 7 years, but he finally got his revenge for us embarrassing him after Sirengate.

Perfectly encapsulated the reason why I can't watch it, watching Nicholls willfully violate us again is way too masochistic. I'm still recovering from the 50 and goal he gifted Franklin, that sort of thing should never, ever be seen in a GF again.
