The Mock drafts for the Pre-season Draft and the Rookie Drafts Normal and NSW) are now appearing. Perhaps we could now make our predictions for the Swans.

On another thread I've made 'a best guesstimate' that if Sam Rowe is re-rookied as a NSW zone; then we will go for a mature KPP type with the last of our 'normal' draft picks.

For the three NSW Zone picks I thought maybe:

Sam Rowe;

Either Aaron Bruce (188 cm, Eastlake) or Dean Terlich (186 cm, Murray Bushrangers) for a utility type; and

Either Jay Koehler (192 cm, Murray Bushrangers) or Michell Colvin (192 cm, Wagga) for a developing KPP type.

Those who have regularly watched our reserves and the ‘top up’s we have tried might have a better informed opinion of the possibilities.

I've heard of the name Koehler somewhere, anybody have any information on how these guys play? I'll try looking it up..

Found some post-match assessments from 28th June 2007.

NSW/ACT V NT

Mitchell Colvin
Recruiter 1: Mitchell shows a bit at times, although he tends to drift in and out of games. He does have good hand skills.

Tim McIntyre
Recruiter 1: Tim is a good player, but he is small and he's going to have to get a lot of the footy to be recognised. He kicked three goals in the first 35 minutes of the game, but then he didn't do a lot after that.

Dean Terlich
Recruiter 1: Terlich certainly has good skills, although his pace needs to improve.

Recruiter 2: Dean Turlich is a player that I really like. He didn't do much today and in the last month he's been down on form, but he lives in country New South Wales in Osborne – where Adam Schneider is from. He's got a burst of pace, so I'll watch him closely for the rest of the carnival.

Jay Koehler
Recruiter 1: Koehler is a Murray Bushrangers kid with nice size and speed, but his kicking isn't good enough at the moment.

Loccy McGregor
Recruiter 2: Loccy McGregor was really good today. He's only 174cm but he shows plenty of dash.

Ryan Davis
Recruiter 2: Davis was good against the Northern Territory today, although he lacks some pace.

Aaron Bruce
Recruiter 2: Bruce was good at centre half-back. He's strong and has got good hands, but he's not going to play a key position (in the AFL) at 188cm. He's been playing senior footy for a couple of years in the Canberra competition for Eastlake and has been good.

DOB: 14/12/89

Previous Clubs: Eastlake Junior

Height: 189cm

Weight: 85kg

Position: Utility

Eastlake Games: 33 (30 seniors)

Achievements:
U/16 State team 2005
Senior Debut for Eastlake 2005
Best first year player Eastlake 2006

More tomorrow :D

Rowe and O'Dwyer will probably be retained. Some likely NSW rookies might be Dean Terlich (186, 83) and Aaron Bruce (188, 86). Breust is too young and most of the others are scholarship holders. Mitch Colvin (192 85) showed a bit at the Nationals and has some size. The KPP we are looking for will probably not come from NSW.

I think we'll take Terlich (Bushies)- clever forward and a good football brain so could develop the ability to play midfield. Not sure about Aaron Bruce, as I still think they'll take Troy Wright (Eastern Ranges) who is your 189cm athletic versatile player.

Clubs looking for a key position defender down the list are going to struggle. Hawks would like one but don't think there is any quality there.

Thanks for the profiles.

FWIW, the Bushrangers coach said this about Terlich; " Terls is a wingman/hf/RR who has terrific skills on both sides of his body and while he's not super quick, he does have a good burst of speed. Plays a physical brand of and has a very good football head on his shoulders."

Sounds good to me.

sounds a little like Veszpremi, except he's more of a winger.

Thanks for that.

Sydney used their top 3 picks (10, 26 and 41) and picked up Matty O'Dwyer, Brendan Murphy and Jake Orreal respectively.

Got this off RWO:

Aaron Bruce 188cm. Defender.
Dean Terlich 186cm. Utility.
Beckmans - 188cm 80kg

Fair bit of versatility there, with medium height. Looks like we are going forward with the versatile midfielders team plan.

Very surprised that Rowe wasn't picked up.

I can only assume that he wasn't 'NSW eligible' and therefore the one live pick was a shootout between he & O"Dwyer.

For not the first time I am bemused about our lack of talls.
In the ruck we have Jolly & Everitt (who will be 34 in May next year), a guy coming from schools football in Currie and......well that's about it.

Playfair has a career total of 57 hitouts and LRT a total 79. Indeed Barry Hall with 249 hitouts is more 'credentialled' than both of the afore mentioned players. But using any of those in the ruck will potentially upset team balance.

White, Murphy & Orreal are all still learning the game.

Of course we also have Goodes, but hopefully his centre bounce days are behind him and he has 'fined down' to play a running role and I would consider it an indictment on our football staff if we had to revert back to him.

Our success has been built on the 2 ruckmen principle and our gameplan developed around that strategy. Either we are now following the Grant Thomas 'ruckmen are a waste of space' view or our football staff are assuming that injuries will never hit our team.

I wouldn't have thought that Sam Rowe would have made it as a ruckman, but I concur with you that our ruck stocks are tremendously shallow. An injury or two to Jolly and Everitt and we would have Ted Richards running around like a headless chook in the ruck.

Rowe was quite a handy junior ruckman, and whilst I agree he was more likely to be a prospective KPP in the AFL he had least knew how to play the position.

And I forgot all about Richards.

Please, please let that not be our back up strategy.

Rowe will probably not make it as a ruckman at AFL level but I thought he might be able to become a handy KPP and cover for LRT at CHB if there's a long-term injury. KPP takes a long time to develop and I really don't see why we can't give him another year.

We picked both Verszprimi and Meredith which sounds as though will compete with O'Dwyer for the same position - why are we giving O'Dwyer another run over Rowe when we have much, more depth in O'Dwyer's position? What is the chance of a delisted rookie like him getting a senior game over the class of 05', Daniel O'Keefe and even Versprimi and Meredith? The fact he was delisted means he's even behind Smith in the pecking order.

I can't understand the reason behind picking O'Dwyer over Rowe at all.

The last thing we want is for Goodes and LRT to enter the centre circle again. My gut feeling is that we actually got Playfair over as a potential third ruckman rather than as a KP forward (which there are few signs that he is capable of being one), but that's just my gut feeling.

I'm surprised and disappointed too that O'Dwyer got the nod over Rowe. I don't see anything in O'Dwyer that makes me think he'll ever play AFL footy - I see him as a poor man's Jon Simpkin - while Rowe I think could have made a handy fill-in key backman.

While I'll be honest and say that I haven't seen a lot of O'Dwyer, I am extremely disappointed that he was chosen over Rowe - someone that seemed to have showed a bit and a young KP prospect that knows our system.

Given that we've drafted also exclusively of small/mediums in the earlier rounds of the National Draft in the past 4/5 years and with all these prospects are all waiting for a spot to open in the senior side, why do we given another opportunity to someone we deemed to be on the lower pecking order than all of our young small/mediums (Jack, Moore, Brabazon, Thornton, Smith to name a few) over a KP prospect that we really don't have much of?

I really can't think of a logical reason other than the fact that Roos just don't want young talls in the side at all. I'm still a tad frustrated about the decision even after all these days to calm down.

Rowe is still listed on the official website. None of the other rookies that were delisted (e.g. Phillips, Shaw, M.Davis) from last year are. Does that mean he is still on the list somehow?!

No he's definitely gone.
