The VFL season for 2023 gets underway with a trip up to Sydney to play the Swans as the curtain-raiser to the AFL game later in the day, albeit the game will be played at Tramway Oval in Moore Park rather than at the SCG.

The Hawks would love to have a win away from home to open the season, although the Swans will undoubtedly be tough to beat on their home deck. It will be the first time that new Box Hill coach Zane Littlejohn has taken charge of the Hawks in a game worth four points, so there will no doubt be some nerves from both the players and the coaching staff as the season gets underway.

The game will be broadcast live on the AFL website at www.afl.com.au, and through the AFL app.

Teams to come.

Box Hill have now named their squad to take on the Swans, as follows:

AFL listed: 1. Harry Morrison, 14. Jack Scrimshaw, 18. Max Lynch, 21. Cooper Stephens, 24. Denver Grainger-Barrass, 27. Ned Long, 29. Jai Serong, 30. Sam Butler, 33. Tyler Brockman, 37. Josh Weddle, 38. Max Ramsden, 40. Seamus Mitchell, 41. Joshua Bennetts, 42.Bailey Macdonald, 43. Jack O'Sullivan, 44. Henry Hustwaite.

VFL Listed: 55. C. Porter, 57. J. Thorpe, 60. E Phillips, 61. M Hall, 62. S Horner, 64. T Waack, 65. E Stanley, 66. C Brown, 74. L Coghlan, 78. K Agosta

Very young side.

Patrick Naish won't be playing for Box Hill after all, and Parsons, Cavarra and De Bolfo (a CHB) are out for the year injured. I think Trudgeon hurt his ankle last week. So Callum Brown the only mature age recruit. No Beasley or Mascitti, so VERY light on for experienced talls.

Scrim and Butler not playing… likely Sub / emergencies for the AFL. Serong also not out there.

Brockman gets the 1st goal, Sydney reply straight away.
H 1.0.6
S 1.1.7

Sydney get the next but the Hawks, after a period of sustained fwd pressure reply through Thorp.

2.2.15
2.1.13

20min mark
Swans get get a goal and the Hawks reply through a great pass from Bennetts to Jed Rule

H 3.4.22
S 3.2.20

A great pass from H.Morrison to Brockman on the siren for the Hawks 4th.

Quarter Time.
H 4.4.28
S 3.3.21

For a VFL game the skills from both sides are good. An even performance from the Hawks: they are getting more of the ball 79 disposals but the swans are moving it quickly (60 disposals) and look dangerous when they enter the fwd 50.

Brocky starting on fire so far- tune his radar up and he walks into the team next week.

Didn’t think Brocky had the leg to kick that one after the siren. Great return for him so far, get him into the team

How was the no call on Francis for holding the ball :tearsofjoy:
Yeah that one and then the front on tackle and dumping of DGB when he didn’t have the ball.

Just blantantly obvious frees, completely missed.
