Autopsy Round 10, 2025: Hawks get Demonized

Agree - in what world would you play Huswaite over either of them; one of the least effective 15 possessions I’ve ever seen in my life

Reckon Butler was dropped for pulling out of a contest last week at a critical moment. Would say it was amusing to see Hustwaite hear footsteps himself late in today’s game but just really disappointing.

I think there are a lot of people on this board who have crazy expectations of this team.

When healthy We have the best backline and forward line. We have A Grade wingers. We have a pretty good ruck who is out of form. And then outside of Newcombe our mids are collectively C Grade.

And that’s why I said it all year last year - we were never a chance of winning it because of our shit midfield. No chance we were going to beat Brisbane or Geelong.

This year I went with full expectations that we make a prelim and I gave us 10% chance of winning it all - the 10% optimism re: premiership was just because I thought Ward and Mackenzie will improve (which they have) and give Newc some help. With Day being the wild card.

Nothing about what happened today, and I mean absolutely nothing, has changed my point of view about where I think we are as a team. It’s very hard to beat good teams without your second best back, missing your top 2 forwards ( we look 2000x better with Chol - anyone on this board who says otherwise is severely impaired) in addition to some injuries to our already shit midfield. Like come on Morrison, Maginness and ****ing Henry Huswaithe all played today lol! Seriously Melbourne are a good team - there is not one team in the completion who would be able to beat them without their best 2 tall forwards, second best backline and Huswaite, Magginess and Morrison playing in their midfield.

Everyone calm down - we had a great start to the year despite a tough draw and banked some wins - as long as we win one game of the next 3 whilst getting back to better health - we will be fine.

Nothing you have said is wrong. I think most people's issue is effort and skill.

Lose, but put in. There are a lot of players that just don't seem to be giving 100%
Maybe theyre tired as we have consistently had very tough games up to this point. Even essendon brought the heat.

And skill. Very frustrating to see basic skill errors, particularly when everything else has fallen apart in a game

Pretty funny that we were trying to sell him as untapped potential to essendon last season though.
Gee 1 game and he makes a few errors. He's barely had any go at the top level. I'd like to see him get a run at it, but with Mitchell, wholesale changes again will ruin any chance he has.

Hugely disappointed but...
Hear me out
Who's gonna likely finish higher on the ladder by the end of the year? They still have some real solid premiership players playing at a very good level so, it was never gonna be easy with all our oust.
Gunston - our best option as FF
Chol - our best option as CHF who competes when ball hits the ground .
Barras - AA level FB
Nash - top 20 clearance player ( out of 75 midfielders)
Scrimshaw - direct inclusion for TB but unavailable
Day - obviously the one we missing the most.
Now, people can bang on about me been too optimistic and all but let's see when we have these guys back whether the likes of we had today are even close to the mark.!!! Honestly, dees wouldn't get anywhere near with our full compliment.
Also, Sicily, who's been solid this year was awful today
Petty smacked three on him in 40 minutes FFS!!
Not all injured players return and produce their best quickly.

Nor do they come in for players who are simply dropped. We may well get more injuries.

Melbourne had roughly 7 or 8 of the best 26 players unavailable as well. They covered them better than we did.

People seem to overlook that.

Look, I want him to do well, but he just can’t compete at the AFL level. It’s just so obvious sorry.

I would not like to see him get a run at it. It would not be good for us.

Thought he competed well. Better than other "senior" players.

I guess I'm an optimist in this case, and probably on my own

He looks completely out of his depth - I reckon all 10 of his handballs today were to players in immediate pressure. He just is not good enough to play at this level and it just demonstrates how bad our midfield depth is that he is getting selected

Edit: I’m not proud of saying this but was at a cafe this morning after my son’s basketball. Anyway one of the parents is a mad hawk and has become a great mate of mine over the couple of seasons probably attended about 30 Hawks & BHH games together now - when he told me that Huswaithe was getting a game today, not a word of a lie - I spat out my coffee and said there is a <1% chance we win today. I have nothing against him personally - seen him play a heap of BHH games - he is just absolutely not good enough. If he plays more than one more game we won’t get out of the wild card game

Morrison Finn and HH have had so many opportunities and they’re vanilla and don’t improve the team. At least give Nairn or someone a run of games and see what happens.
I thought Finn and especially HH - who was great on the inside - did well today.

Set up a couple of good forays forward with quick, powerful handballs. He wasn't alone with shit handballs

I’m not sure the several times he short stepped it or one armed it can be counted as competing well.

Unfortunately for him we are already carrying some mids that aren’t super quick, and he’s well behind them.

He really fails to have AFL intensity, even once he has the ball he just takes way too long to either move or give it off. He just can’t take that next step, doesn’t even look close.

First game in ages. Against a better opp. I can forgive that. Others, I can not

Wow for those at the ground watching I ask you to challenge me on these observations.

Keep Ryan in the team. Like the way he attacks it. Straight lines.

Calsh Dear missed two sitters in the first qtr and then completely disappears. Not up to AFL standard at the moment re fitness. Slow and second efforts when the ball hits the ground are poor. He has clearly put on size but seems lost and needs a spell.

Ramsden- my gawd. It’s like watching a semi trailer trying to move on a suburban street between cars on both sides of the street. Have we ever had a slower key forward…Randall Bone perhaps?

Hustler- fumbled and mumbled and then when he had a touch inside murdered it by hand.

Reeves and Meek were toyed with by Gawn. He pushed them, shoved them, took the ball away from them at times, out manoeuvred them in marking contests ran off them and basically destroyed them. We need extra run asap in this team. Two slow rucks in Llloyd and Ned are done. Time for Mitch to adapt and change tact as that is two weeks in a row 1 player Jackson and Gawn have beaten two.

Sicily is moving like a very slow old man.
He pushes in the back on every play as the ball is coming in and when the ball hits the deck he is cooked. Not sure what you can do with him but the cliff is coming really fast for Sic.

Finn and Harry, yeesh. Cmon Hawthorn…..Give us a couple of kids with some spark for us to look forward too as these two are not the now or the future.

In Nash, Gunston Day Dalton Chol
Out Ramsden Dear Maginness Morrison Reeves

In the end lucky to lose by only 40. Should have been 70 with the dominance they had.

He’s not up to it. It happens.

It’s nothing personal GG, he just isn’t good enough for the level.

With injured players to come back, he would have known he had 2 hours to make a mark for himself, and he couldn’t get out of first gear in intensity, that’s enough for me.

Yeah sadly HH's not going to make the grade. Was terrible below the knees and doesn't have the pace. Just no stand out qualities.
He hit several 1 metre hand passes today which sadly stood out compared to his teammates. He’s got the reflexes and the skills but not the ability to make a physical contest at AFL level.

I mean we played so badly I didn't even notice the umpiring at all lol and that's rare lol
I actually thought the umpires were great today, no major shockers, they paid what they saw and let the game flow quite well.

If only we could see that standard every week.

Day playing VFL.

Could be a chance v Saints.

It's the same problems we have had from the start of the season. To many tall/slow players. Can we please go back to 2 tall backs, 2 tall forwards and 1 ruck.
I thought we were a 2nd tier team with a good chance but we might be a 3rd tier team with less chance. Thats ok as we Will still have some good wins for the year.
