Culley is great overhead and has a very good kick, not sure if you've seen him play?
Are you telling me you think he will be a better forward than one of Allen, Waterman or Maric? We will have a resting ruckman in that same forward line so we probably dont want to be adding Culley to that to make it 5 talls

Assuming they all stay fit for the next two years which is the timeframe you’ve offered and Darling is still playing at the level at 34.

Could be a better inclusion than Maric, sure - we just don’t know the ceiling of either yet. Both top mid-season picks so could be a coin toss who will end up having the better career this early on

Jack Williams too, hes shown a lot more promise long term as a KPF than Culley has. We have too many KPFs as it is, it wouldnt be prudent for the club to treat Culley as one too

I would take Maric over Culley by far, more athletic and has an elite kick on him. With Allen, Waterman and a ruckman we dont need Culleys size in the forward line, itll have to be on the back of other traits

We need to get rid of some young players, if we could get a Baker deal for example over the line by trading Culley then we shouldnt be against exploring it
That may be true. But even considering 'getting rid' of one of our three(?) recent Rising Star nominees, with SFA games under his belt, who seems to be pretty fair dinkum both in terms of endeavour and playing style ... well that's premature at least. Very premature. :(

Culley isn't a KPF, he's a HFF or pocket or mid. He's not competing with Waterman or Allen or JWilliams.
So would you say hes competing with Maric for a fwd spot and then Yeo/Ginbey/Reid for a mid spot as a big bodied mid?

Sheeds already been sort of moved out, and can assume we have earmarked that spot for Hewett, then LEdwards spot for a real winger

Sure its early, but we need list spots!!
Something has to give, unless we start getting rid of contracted players we have very little room to move this offseason. If we get Buss, Baker and 3 draft picks, plus upgrade Culley, thats minimum 6 spots
Gaff, JJ are the only 2 locks.
Witho and Rotham look locked in our best 23 right now, LEdwards is doing his role, HEdwards is our best KPD depth, Barnett is our only developing ruckman, JWilliams looks like a very good prospect as a KPF, Burgiel id much rather over Culley as a prospect in a role of higher need, Yeo I think stays.
We have to delist or remove 4 of those guys I just mentioned.

He's currently depth for our midfield, which doesn't bat that deep. Might as well get rid of Hall by the logic that he might struggle to get into a fully fit midfield. As a bonus, he can also be depth for Maric/Ryan up forward.

We need list spots! read my other comment just before. Assume we get in Baker, add Hewett, Sheed was ok on the weekend, Petch. Thats at least 8 guys plus Hall who can take up 3 spots in the middle at any time. Add a 2024 high draft pick

Are we starting to see a trend here? First we had someone obsessing over Cripps. Then another obsessing over Chesser. I hope we're not seeing it a third time with Culley.

Just need someone to obsess over Cole, and then we’ll have covered all the Cs.

Culley's on the rookie list. As we don't have a third rounder, might be wrong but I believe we could just upgrade him in lieu of the third round pick we currently don't have, then we can take our first/second.

Gaff is surely gone, ditto Trew. Barring any other surprises, I can see HEdwards being let go, simpy due to Jamo having a contract. That's the 3 senior spots we need to fill, with potentially HEdwards being re-rookied.

We don't have a plethora of draft picks, so it makes no sense to clean house like we have the past 2 seasons, simply to fill them with 4th+ rounders.

Agreed.

I'd add Burgiel and Baker to the list of players potentially getting culled. Leaves 3-4 picks in the national draft which is more than sufficient.

We have on our list -

• 37 main listed players
• 5 rookie listed players which could be 6 next week
• 2 Cat B rookie listed players

At a minimum we have to add 3 players to the main list via the draft or upgrading players off the rookie list.

To do that we need to reduce our main list from 37 to 35 which could be achieved by Gaff retiring and delisting one other. That would enable us to add 2 players via the draft and promote Culley off the rookie list

Delisting Trew would enable us to retain our MSD pick

If we want to use more than our first two draft picks then we need to delist someone else

If we want to trade in a player or add a FA then we need to delist someone else for each player added

I'm not obsessing at all. I suggested somebody who might struggle to get a game, and people assume is a lock to get a spot on the main list next year.

To not even consider trading him is silly

I've said multiple times I'm happy to keep him, but with Witho and rothams form we will struggle to find list spots

My understanding is we need to upgrade Culley this year if we want to keep him, and we need 3 picks in the draft.

That makes 4 list spots needed.
If we get Baker and Buss thats 2 more for 6 spots

Alright this makes it easier to keep culley around, still going to be a squeeze for spots.
If a club was interested in Culley I still think it should be considered

You need to turn over 3 senior list spots, that doesn't mean you fill them via the draft.

2 years ago, I think it was, Melbourne/Richmond only took 2 ND picks, for instance.

Remember Culley taking a bounce down the left flank and looking infield like so many of our players do ( NOT ) and hitting JK on the tit. Plus surprisingly strong overhead!
I agree there is a problem where to fit him in but for a start he will keep Maric honest.
He will keep Ginbey honest as a mid tackling machine.
To be fair he hasn’t really had a prolonged run at showing us everything! A RS nomination says he’s got a bit to offer.

Hoping for minimal changes this week.

Yeo for JJ or Sheed.

Think that'll be about it unless we have forced changes.
