In 1993, in the days before going viral was a thing, Kevin Sheedy managed to ‘go viral’, so to speak with his iconic jacket wave. The Eagles were in front by 4 points with 40 seconds and had just kicked behind. Essendon managed to swiftly transition the ball from the defensive 50 into the forward. Salmon who has been held goalless up until that point, was pushed in the back by Glen Jackovich, and given a free kick.

Salmon kicked the goal to get Essendon over the line by just two points, prompting coach Kevin Sheedy to emotionally wave his jacket over his head, starting the 'jacket waving' tradition.

This was also the beginning of a sort of mini-rivalry with West Coast full of interesting moments such as Hird hugging the fan, and Scott Lucas’ 7 Goals in the final quarter of Hird and Sheedy’s last game… a game we almost stole.

The Round that was

How good was that? Finally, we beat the damn Tigers. It was a great testament to the improved mental fortitude of this team, especially with Shiel joining Parish, Wright and Kelly on the injury list. I’ve no doubt many of foresaw another ‘honourable loss’ coming when we were down by 3 goals in the last.

Ridley was amazing on his return; a reminder that had he not copped that cheap shot we would have beaten Port. McGrath is proving he belongs down-back; Weids is proving to have been an excellent recruit this year, and Durham made the moment his! Captain Merret was rightfully awarded best afield is probably his best game of the season so far.

Last time we Met

Last year was a grim year for Essendon, and one of the worst losses for the year was the round 15 loss to the West Coast Eagles. West Coast Eagles won 2 games for the year, and one of them was against us… Essendon losing to bottom 2 sides is not uncommon, but it still hurt at the time.

My Tip

We should beat them, and comfortably, but let’s not pretend we haven’t been prone to shitting the bed over the past 20 years.

We would not want to spud it up after this win!

Kelly and maybe Shiel fit...Bryan MUST get a look in.

My early tip riding on adrenaline after knocking Richmond off: Essendon by 56 points.

Phillips in scintillating form the last 5 weeks, back the young man in - we have one eye to the future.
I stand by my statement that he is not bankable. It pissed me off Nankervis was far more intimidating. I would love to know the real reason why he can’t back up his good performances. Been poor for a month now.

Kelly should be back in. 2 weeks for concussion is already longer than average. Someone is going to be unlucky to make way for Kelly.

Guelfi didn't play a full game maybe only a half. Did look good in a small forward role though

Bryan has great VFL form and Flippa is now well down on where he started.

I think the changes are about what Eth had.

This is a perfect opportunity to rest Heppell imho, has been good but with Kelly hopefully returning, Durham can go to half back or even Langford possibly.
Pls no langford back. Or duz.

In: bryan, shiel, kelly
Out: phillips, hepp (rest), tippa (rest)

Ridley - zerk - kelly
Mcgrath - baldwin - redman
Martin - Caldwell - langford
Durham - weid - perkins
Menzie - Draper - Stringer
Bryan - merrett - hobbs
Shiel - hind - snelling - davey
Guelfi

Give merrett, caldwell and hobbs unit a chance to back that pressure game up.

Exactly my changes and team

Hepp or Guelf as sub

I think it’s a good week for a rest for Hep - I don’t like the idea of him as the sub. Prefer a game changer-style like Hind, Guelfi, etc. Hopefully we don’t need it, but still.
