I mentioned this 6 weeks ago. We are good at general stoppages but poor at centre clearances. The stats are even worse when you compare centre clearances that result in a subsequent possession outside the centre square. Our centre clearances are often quick kicks to the opposition's loose man.

IMHO the first step is to get Dougie out of the centre square and use THE MIGHTY THOR at the start of every quarter.

We just don't have an efficient extraction game to link to positioned outside runners. We just don't have it at the AFC !

we'll never win a premiership with douglas and dmac in our 22, so its pointless playing them.
but it wont change as long as campo is still there

Dougie's better games this season have come surprisingly when he's been playing a lot more at HB. I've really liked some work he has done back there. i think we should be playing Dougy there more often, and either giving some more midfield minutes to Greenwood, or pushing someone like Laird, Smith or Seedsman into the midfield/HFF more often.

He's looked at his best this year when playing as an unaccountable half back crossed with a loose checking small defender. So he's following the Reilly/Van Berlo path.

To be fair though, he has been good at it. I know it's not a h ard role to play, but he has given up some good run and drive at times and taken on some dangerous kicks into the corridor that have paid off.

As I said, allow him to do that and get Laird and Smith up the ground and involved more.

How about Brad Crouch??????

Infact how are you rating Sloane over the last 6 weeks
Crouch getting just under 30 touches and tackling like a demon...doing way more than Douglas. That said, he's butchering the ball and showing zero composure so he's maybe a 6.5/10 atm. Defensive running must also improve.

Sloane terrible. It's no longer 'events' but a trend and the heat should be on him. The team give him zero help but he should be doing better. I'd give Sloane and Smith an equal mid/HBF split and if they still stink it up try the wing. Both are A graders who must lift.

100% correct. Get him back there this week. Kelly out.

Maybe Wigg into the 22, they can rotate a bit and we see which one of them performs the role better.

How about we swap him with Smith then.

Or we could drop Douglas for Seedsman and have both Smith and Seedsman distributing off half back; a very effective strategy from 2016.

Shoehorning a player into half back because they're no good in the middle is straight out of the Brent Reilly playbook. How about we play guys on half back who are specialists in that role, traded in and developed to play there

TBH the only consistent mid we have had is Matt

Brad has had good and bad gmes so has Douglass and Sloane was elite in the first half of the year, we have no one to replace this talent

Here's how I'd like to see the back 7:

- Talia
- Brown
- Lever
- Hartigan OR Cheney OR Doedee (depending on form and match ups but Hartigan ranked 1 atm)

Back/Mids

- Laird rotating with Douglas OR Wigg
- Smith rotating with Sloane

Back/wing

- Seedsman rotating with Atkins.

At any one time we have a good mix of height, run, defence/offence, and at least 4 guys who can make the play rather than only be useful to crab kick.

Impossible to compare, Keath is playing OK against a bunch of amatuers and Harto has had good and bad games against superstars, he beat Robbie Gray earlier this year, how do you rate Gray

We never know how untried players will perform when they move to a higher level. What we do know is that Keath performed much better as a key defender than Andy Otten in the SANFL last year and according to "some" Andy has been the second coming.

We also know that Doedee performed better than Kelly in the SANFL last year in a similar role and Kelly has been "solid" in the AFL this year.

Then there's Greenwood, who you insisted before he was selected, needed another full year in the SANFL .

I wouldn't make too many changes at one time (three at the most this week) but if Hartigan doesn't improve and Keath continues to play well then I think it would be crazy not to give him a go.

Pretty sure I wrote he needed to have a crack on the back of his performances at SANFL level. As for Keath and Doedee, Doedee is a lock down defender averages 17 posessions at SANFL level and some numpties are saying he is going to provide rebound. Keath hasnt set the world on fire also

Players I have said I wanted to give a go have been all based on form

CEY, Wigg, Greenwood

If you havent worked it out I like to see form and lots of it

I wouldnt be saying bring in the emergency break glass option of Thommo if he hadnt performed, Seeds looked OK and if we werent in the position we are I would make him perform like that another occasion or two, Gov is also lucky he played like a hack against the amatuers on the weekend but we need something to get us out of this rut. If Gov comes in and fails like he did on the weekend against teh weekend warriors it would be a risk that wasnt worth taking

So would you say you like to see guys in form or guys who rack up disposal numbers ?

Obviously the club is deciding on who is in form, you can read football writers articles to see who they rate, thommo is getting both disposals and rating but being in teh mid that happens. I watched Adelaide against the bays and on teh box. Against the bays both Keath and doedee were ordinary so much so Doedee got pantsed by a 19 year old SANFL rookie, not really a good recomendation to play AFL

Its an interesting stat. Champion Data hit outs to advantage has Sauce ranked at 4th in the AFL averaging 11.5 per game but as you said we are ranked 16th in centre clearance differential, could have something to do with us being ranked dead last for kicking efficiency, and a struggling midfield.

I doubt that many of Sauces HOTA, or even just hitouts, come from the centre bounce. He gets jumped over in there but he goes about making it up with strong body work around the ground. We get molested in the centre square because Sauce can't jump.

I never want to see atkins playing in the backlines or even rotating through there. he turns it over too much.. can hit a target.

I sometimes wonder whether you watch Glenelg matches from the Bay Bar and Bistro.

Earlier this season when you were mocking me for suggesting that we play THE MIGHTY THOR, you said that you had seen him play against the Bays last year and he didn't do much.

The following quote is from the AFC website
"Hugh Greenwood claimed his first Magarey Medal votes with three for his standout 22-possession and three-goal game against Glenelg."

Alex Keath also had a great game that day (I think it might have been his first SANFL match). I haven't seen Alex play live since he was moved forward but I note that he was moved back to defence against Centrals.

You jumped on board THE MIGHTY THOR Train after he played his first AFL match. It's not too late to save some pride and jump on board the Keath Train now :D.

FB: Brown Talia Lever
HB: Seed Hartigan Laird
C: Sloane Greenwood Smith
HF: Cameron Walker Lynch
FF: Betts Jenkins McGovern
Foll: Jacobs M Crouch B Crouch

Int: Cheney, Douglas, Atkins, Milera

In: Seedsman, Cheney, McGovern
Out: Beech, Kelly, Otten

There will be loud voices at the selection table clamoring for Dmac's return this week off a 26 disposal game in the SANFL. Resign yourselves to it.

However, in a parallel universe where people at our club have a capacity to learn from past mistakes, I would make him earn it for at least another few months.

On to less depressing business, how good is Greenwood? Refreshingly for an Adelaide mid he kicks more than handballs and went at 95%.

Its time to get back to a winning, balanced structure. We have allowed ourselves to become too slow and too tall. Incrementally, through a series of well-intentioned bouts of weakness we have accumulated a number of players who don't belong at the level (Beech, Kelly) or outright damage our structure (Otten).

Beech, Kelly and Otten all make way. These are tough calls. Three good blokes. Not based on the last game, rather on the good of the team as a whole going forward. Good triers, but all depth if we are honest. We have three AFL quality players waiting to come back that considerably improve our dynamic in terms of speed, pressure and hardness in Seedsman, McGovern and Cheney.

Sloane and Smith to the wings. No point continuing to let them be tagged out of games in their present positions, its just foolish. Sloane has a better chance of burning off his man on the freedom of a wing. Seedsman can take Smith's HBF and Smith can deliver I50. Smith was better this week playing mostly up the wing

Douglas, Atkins and Milera on notice. Douglas just has so little hurt factor and Knight should be eyeing his spot.

Atkins' kicking lately has been atrocious. 57% DE and 12 turnovers is piss poor. Most of his meters gained come straight back with interest. If Dmac does come in I hope it is for Atkins, like for like, so we don't have two flakey spuds burning the ball that can't impact a contest to save themselves.

Milera needs to find it more but might be suffering from the general collapse of our midfield since teams ramped up the pressure; supply to our outside receivers has been poor. At least he doesn't burn the ball, going at 86%, but needs to kick it more and use his main weapon more than last week.

Is it Thursday 5:55pm yet?
No, we're only at Orange Level on the Meltdown Metre

Back 7? By doing this we are leaving Luke Hodge, Corey Enright, Heath Shaw, Shannon Hurn types all by themselves...it's a back 6 FFS

If Thompson comes in, I can be found bashing my head against a wall outside the Railway Station.

I will actually understand the selectors thought process if we see David Mackay back this week. I'll disagree with their choice, but I'll understand the rationale behind it. Bringing Thommo back in makes absolutely no sense whatsoever given where our side is falling down at present. The last type we need is a slow and unaccountable midfielder who can't spread offensively or defensively. If an insider was out due to injury or suspension or just in horrific form, then bringing Thommo back would make sense. Again, I'd disagree with the choice, I'd give Wigg or Poholke a taste first, but I'd understand the reasoning behind the decision.
