Autopsy Round 16, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Collingwood

Solid effort tonight. This game was probably the first game all season where a better team playing better football beat us rather than beating ourselves through skill errors, effort and fatigue.

Hall was really good. Don’t really remember any turn over kicks & the ball he fumbled he followed up with the tackle that the umpire never paid the holding the ball for.

Also just on that play not only was that missed and then the HTB paid against Duggan. When the ball was in the goal square Allan tackled the Collingwood player who just dropped the ball that spilled the the guy who kicked the goal. We got robbed 3 times

As far as rucks go I thought we looked better with Flynn in the contest. He actually started to hit the body more. His best game .
Sorry but Brock is far to jittery for me.Can’t turn right and is too predictably left footed.Soft in the contest.
Maric probably played his best game but there were a couple of 50-50 contests he just didn’t go hard enough.
Getting better all the time but now need to seriously focus on skills execution

Hall looked great. Exactly what the eagles need at the moment. This is probably an unfair criticism because he didn't really do anything wrong but... I don't think I've ever seen Hutchinson do anything to the advantage of the eagles team? like what does he actually do? I didn't know Kelly's contract got extended as well. Hutch until 2029 and Kelly another two years. like why entertain mediocrity in such an exciting part of the eagles history.
Right about Hall. Wrong about Hutchinson.

Hall is looking more composed and capable at the level. Makes good decisions and is good with his hands. His tackling is pretty handy as well. Hutchinson is not a wingman but he's getting to places where he can get the ball and generally uses it well. Defensively, he has been fairly solid. He won't be a long term solution on the wing but he's doing OK.

Guaranteed 100 point loses under Simo have now become respectable, taking it up to the opponents loses.

That's a major improvement, and it's understandable why we are running out of legs.

It's a high intensity game plan which is physically taxing, especially for a young inexperienced squad.

But geez, once the team can sustain it for longer periods, we could start moving up eventually.

Hough and Baker are heart and soul players.

Duggan cops a lot of shit and started the game so bad but thought he was very influential after that. Tough with the defensive side and was involved a lot with our surges and transition forward

Mccarthy has played 2 games and for me i get the ease of mind when he gets the ball as did when Bunga/Gov/shep and etc did back

Baker has been massive since the start of the year. I wasn’t a huge fan of his acquisition but thats all gone now. Absolute star and it seems like he is having a personal best year.

Hedwarss was massive and he’s slowly gaining confidence in his game and after putting the intercept marking away for spoils he’s now going back to not only attempting them but also taking them.

Another one I have to give credit to is Maric. I’m quite harsh on him but today was his best game in a very long time. Was exact game you want from him. Got his hands around the footy a bit on a wing and used the ball really dangerously. Thats the standard he has to hit weekly.
Still some iffy kicks from Maric but McCarthy coming in has allowed Mini to use Maric's movement and kicking up the field. It's nice to see movement off the ball.

Agree on brock i think shirked at least one pivotal ground ball contest and got pushed out of a few marking contests by mihochek. I think brock maybe needs to spend some time in the gym over the pre-season to put on some size. Flynn will always be a stop gap until we can recruit someone better imho. Maric being a former forward is still learning his craft as a backman so I'd give him time. I still think their were moments where players were unsure what to do gameplan wise so I think we still need to spend time educating maybe next pre-season start focusing on skills and fitness but we'll have even more new faces having to learn the gameplan due to the draft so I dunno.

Had we of bloody kicked straight during periods of dominance in the 1st quarter and even the second we'd have put some serious scoreboard pressure on.

Love Jilliams but he was a big culprit tonight. Very unlike him. Made me look like a dickhead multiple times

"Watch this babe, he's a deadeye, check this out...... 👀"

Positives:
So many players, I’ll no doubt miss but so great to see how easy Jobe made that goal look kids going to be a star. Earlier in the week I was thinking drafting top tier mids would drop Hough back to defence. 27 at 100% is insane well done.

So good to feel competitive again and in large parts due to kids working hard.

Negatives:
TK burning an easy Maric goal, that’s not the leadership we’re after.

To the single ump who made the non-HTb call on a Collingwood player spun three times before instantly calling HTB on Duggan go **** right off. Quite possibly the most obvious cheating I have ever seen and it seems like it’s getting worse every week.

Honestly the glazing for Nick daicos is insane. Real good player with a high work rate but I have never seen a player so often waive off kicking options to ensure their option is the short kick they’ll get the handball back from or run behind players for easy hands off or run to ensure they’re end of chain. 34 possessions more realistically a fluffed up 25.

The only negative might have cost us the game.

Jack Williams coughing the ball up 11 second at the end of the third. Goal. And then missing from dead in front to take the first goal of the fourth, that went down the other end for a pies goal 20 seconds later. 18 point turn around

commentators curse...i'll blame you ;)

Duggan had less turnovers than:
  • Nick Daicos
  • Josh Daicos
  • Tom McCarthy
You'd think he's the worst player to ever pull on a jumper though reading the gameday threads.

Stop looking at stats and watch the game, he bloody kills us.

  • Hall has been good every opportunity he has been given this year. Feel like he's been made to earn every game. Hopefully he stays in the team a while longer. His disposal looks far less an issue at AFL level to me.

Indeed. I've watched almost every WAFL game this year and his kicking tonight was far better than the majority of what he's produced in the Beagles for the year.

I'm somewhere in the middle of a being an unrelentingly rabid Hall hater like HoneyBadger35 and an obsessed Tate-like fanboi like Dark Sharks and I'd love for him to come on and be our Redden replacement. I will confess each time he had it tonight I was waiting for him to kick an absolute flower... bag of flour but he flushed most of them. Really happy for the kid.

Dropping young players back to the WAFL to work on their game is not the negative some posters believe it is

Gifting young players games is also not the positive either
I agree but the same standard must be set for senior players that aren't performing. EDIT: Also some guys just perform better at a higher level. When they are in the two's for whatever reason they don't look as good as when they are in the afl squad.

He showed a turn of pace in some moments too that I didn't think he had in him.

Just finished watching, stoked with that game.

+ HoneyBadger35 whipping boy Hall put in a shift. WAFL form carried over, but it was his uncontested ball which was the big win, showed he could get it outside the contest. 22D, 4T and 3 clearances from only 10 cba's is solid.

+ Jobe is undeniably a class player, nice moment watching him dob it from 50m on an angle post high. Has now kicked more AFL goals from 1 game than A.Reid has at any level in almost 12 weeks, hehe.

+ Baker is a king. Just an absolute vacuum whenever the ball is on the deck, how can you not love him? He still can't kick but everything else he does makes up for it, heart and soul. Hope he wins our B&F.

+ Good Segway into Graham who I hope gets the runner up in the B&F. Not perfect but has but shows up each week like we need him to and has put in another full shift.

+ Hedwards was enormous. Potentially the best game I've seen him play. For all the carry on about Darcy, Harry was the best defender on the ground by a country mile. Glad we've got him.

+ Hough is out to prove me wrong about him being a midfielder. Exquisite game tonight, can't knock anything he did or any area he didn't meet expectations.

+ McCarthy was awesome again. Uncovering blokes like him who instantly make out team better is why I'd like us to keep turning our list over and getting rid of the deadwood that's been average for too long.

+ Timothy Kelly contributing is a big tick. Best game I've seen him play for a while.

+ Brockman was good, despite fading in/out of the game. Jilliams could've had a huge night as well but was surprisingly frustrating to watch.

+ Ginbey keeping Elliot quiet is a massive effort, especially considering he ran off him so much and impacted so many aerial contests.

- Duggan's first quarter was comically bad, but he lifted and did some very important things for the remainder of the game. Arguably could/should be in the positives.

- Went too late on the sub yet again, not that Hunt was much chop anyway. The selection of Hunt as sub and giving Bo and Clay a full game each was also a big tick.

Not that many negatives to be honest, hard to knock a team that tried hard all game against the ladder leaders and made their fans proud 👏🏽 💙 💛
You were doing so great until you mentioned Kelly contributing

12 disposals 1 goal from Tim is seriously poor for a player of his calibre and the expectations of him.

Great game, was very exciting to be at.

+
Loved McCarthy again, basically plug and play for 25+ clean touches from now on it seems.
Very exciting to see shanahan's debut, he competed well and got a beautiful first goal right infront of me.
Baker, Hough and Edwards were great.
Our fight back in the second and third were pretty inspiring, if we keep playing with that kinda effort we should snag some very big scalps.

-
Pies fans near me when the siren went were acting like they'd won the flag

I noticed his kicking was actually really good tonight. A few times we fed the ball back inside D50 and it ended up in his hands and I wondered for a minute what was about to happen, but he hit his target perfectly.

I don't understand badges issue, something about him not running hard enough defensively. But that same thing can be said of literally every 19-20 year old player.

I think he can kick fine when he takes a second to compose himself. When he played against Brisbane, I was actually a bit surprised at how much of the ball he got. Hall isn't a stat pig like Gaff, but he seems a more natural accumulator which is something neither Hewett or Harley have shown an ability to do consistently.

I’ll direct you to Suma and his comments later in the week.

Negative

The Ashley and Martin turning point on Fox Super Saturday wasn’t Clay Hall for lols
Goal kicking
I know you can’t have all kids but gee our vets are putrid

Positives

Not grumpy as we get ready to head out to Freo for dinner.
People need to give it a rest about Clay Hall's hair.
don't see why its relevant & the bloke doesn't need his own supporters piling on about it.

I'm a kelly hater but I think his first half was very good. I think he would have hit his kpi's as a half forward with those stats. Cripps got 0.1 from 7 possessions is in trouble might be sub next week or sent to the wafl.

Not forgetting he missed a shot st the start of the third quarter he should have kicked whilst burning someone in a better space then failing to score from 45 metres dead
Infront in the last
