Autopsy Round 18, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Port

Jobe officially equals A.Reids goal contribution for the season (4)... In 3 games.

Archer played 11.

Carn they are playing different roles, 4 goal 1 to 4 goals 9 flatters Jobe but whats going on with Jobe's 0 hitouts to Archers 60 odd? Why is Jobe averaging less marks inside 50 and taking one third of the contested marks as Archer? Why is Jobe padding his stats with uncontested possessions instead of getting his hands dirty like Archer? etc etc.

Looking at the numbers the three young talls are relatively even with each doing better than the others in one area. Jobe is more mobile and getting more ball than the other 2, Jack is converting more of his possession into scores, Archer is getting the least ball but has the most impact when not in possession with his hitouts and 1%ers and stuff.

All 3 could play in the same team comfortably if Jack was at FF, Jobe at CHF and Archer as Ruck Forward. Only issue with that going forward is Waterman squeezes one out and Jobe is averaging same goals per game as Jack already and Archer is better in the ruck, but Bailey still has Archer covered there.

Whats impressive is if we were fully fit right now only 1 of them plays and you probably have Jobe in that spot.

Ok fair shake, let's just look at shots on goal then.

Not counting A.Reids OOB's, lord knows he's had plenty... Archer has kicked 9 behinds. Jobe 1.

So 4.1 from 3 games for an 80% conversion, to 4.9 from 11 games for 30%.

The point is one of them is an obvious forward, the other is an athletic project player. Jilliams is more like A.Reid, role wise. He's kicked 16 goals from 12 starts.

Ports midfield tonight consisted of

Butters
Wines
Rozee
Boak
Jason Horne Francis
Drew
Bergman
Liddy

our midfield consisted of

Dewar
Hewett
Maric
Brockman
Hough
Reid
Hall
Hutchison

Travis Boak alone has played 100 more games than our entire midfield combined.

That’s right, our entire midfield. All eight of them.

There are no negatives tonight. That type of effort and performance with a team so young & inexperienced is inspirational.

Proud of the team and just laughable how pathetic Ports players were grandstanding against a bunch of kids as if they just won the grand final.

Whatever floats their boat, I’d be more concerned that again they are going nowhere…….fast!
And with Harley we now have a dog in the fight - great to see

They're just different players.

Shanahan is a like for like replacement for Oscar Allen, he's 195, a natural mark on the lead and a pure kick of the football. Hard not to love what he's shown so far but I think he's actually slightly fortunate to have gotten his opportunity at a point where we have effectively no established key forwards available- in some ways its easier to show your promise when you've got 4 quarters of being a key target to kick to without needing to lurk behind someone like waterman or allen.

Archer Reid is 203, which means he can play ruck and second/third tall forward. Similar to someone like McKay at Carlton, his role when he plays forward is going to be as much about camping in packs at the top of the square and drawing defensive attention from the pure leading forwards as kicking goals, and he looks like he will be able to do that because he is already a good contested mark who will get much better when he fills out.The guys he will be most likely to squeeze out of our team are (thank ****) Flynn or Bailey. Tbh he's be well advised to get on the ruckman diet straight away because there is a huge hole in our list there and the first person who fills it will be a 200 game player.

Yep the fact that Port players were having a dig at our guys after they FINALLY got the game sealed up (after getting some Ump help) was pretty pathetic. Says a lot about their club.

Reminds me of the Dockers game a few years back with Fredericks backflip and all the chin wagging.

I don't have a problem with it but when the only time you chirp up and puff your chest out is when you are beating up on the team on the bottom of the ladder then you don't look tough, just desperate for attention and self validation.

The grubs in that part of the world have a short memory. They were the tin rattlers facing bankruptcy 15 years ago and had to cover half of of the stadium in tarps because the 'fans' walked out on them.

We've been historically poor for years, yet we continue to thrive off the field and pack out a stadium each week.

They're aging, have poor depth and are about to be basement dwellers for a number of years to come.

'Never tear up our tarps'

I was pissed off with Reid in the game thread when the game was on the line .. just frustrating from him at times ..but watching the reply he did have a crack

He needs support and I have never seen a player umpired liked him different rules for Harley compared to everyone else

Wonder why we never seem to capitalise on the unfortunate 😉 advantage of injured opposition.
Aliir 's mobility was hampered, yet a few times we kicked the ball high and on to his head where he barely has to move.

Have someone run him left, right, up & back. If he refuses to go with you, good.

Not condoning targeting obvious injuries like repeatedly bumping an injured shoulder, but taking advantage where we can with player movement.

The shot on goal where he was running into 50 and should've passed - he was dumped after disposing of it, if it was him doing the dumping it'd be a downfield shot on goal. Caught HTB and punched in the throat - same again, reversed if it was him doing it.

He's exasperated coz he's getting called for something, being the victim of an identical situation later in the same game, then getting nothing for it. It's a joke.

You only had to glance at Butters last night and he was given a free. Harley scragged, held too long etc? Play on.

Archer has had 15 shots on goal, 13 scores so that would be 2 ootf. Going at 27.5%. Jack has had 27 shots on goal [also 2 ootf] going at 59% this season, though as we all remember for a little while there a year or two back he was rated as the most accurate kick at goal in the comp for a tall forward due to small sample size. Jobe's sample size is small enough that if he has an off day and let's say kicks 0.3 next week he's going to go from 80% conversion to 50% in the space of a week.

Anyway the argument I made was that none of them are playing the exact same role, though they are arguably competing for one of two positions. Jobe is currently the side as a key forward over Archer and Jack- which I agree with btw. Bailey Williams is currently in the side as a forward/ruck over Jack and Archer- which I also agree with. Yesterday Jack came into the side to as an emergency to replace a mid so he played as a key forward after the coaching group had first decided we were better off going with 1 less key forward if that key forward was going to be him.

if you want to compare him to Archer Reid then compare their second seasons. Archer is going at 0.4 goals a game to Jack Williams 0.5, though Archer offers approximately 2x what Jack offered in all of the following: hitouts, contested marks, marks inside 50.

Its all in good fun and we all have our favourite players, but to those of you who want to constantly chip on Archer Reid for needing to work on his ball drop, keep in mind that even going at 27% accuracy he's still arguably a more valuable player than Jack Williams was at the same age when you were all fapping over him as a 19 year old in 2023.

I don't know how anyone (hello McQualter and Bell) could watch his games and think "yep, Harley is the one at fault here". Would it kill them to go in to bat for him publicly?

Makes me miss that Ask Simmo segment. Even though questions were heavily vetted, it would be good to have some fan engagement with Mini to ask him stuff like that.

Harley is being umpired differently to other players. I’d say that’s indisputable.

The question is why?

The answer seems very bloody obvious to me; he argues with the umpires in every single contest, he plays for free kicks and he dishes out cheap shots.

Umpires don’t like it.

Now you could strongly argue that makes them petty weasels of people, but the fact is, nothing is going to change until Harley does.

Remember when we used to dominate the free kick differential?

We had Priddis in every contest smiling with umpires, having a joke with them… making them feel like they were one of boys. Heck he even won a Brownlow with less than 1 quarter of Reid’s talent and ability.

Reid needs to change and the sooner he does the more likely we are to increase the our number of wins, which despite all the good news stories, currently stands at 1 with 16 losses. A shameful record by any measure.

To be fair, Alir was playing on an 18 year old KPF in his 3rd game.

A better opponent exploits that matchup and makes Alir pay, Port dodged a bullet with it.

A prime Oscar Allen gets off the chain a bit in Jobe's place.

Yeh, but then it's a coaching staff issue. (Instruction)
Jobe has legs, he gets on his bike, or we make a positional swap.
Very happy with Jobes game.
Bailey Williams well under par up fwd, as were Cripps/Owies.
Port went in with 1 key back less than they usually play.

It wouldn't have changed the results but we rarely seem to get the upper hand when we're at a rotation advantage or playing wounded opposition.
One day..

Pretty much agree with this.

As already posted I have no issues at all with how Reid is playing. If he's made a decision that he will not wait to get scragged and will deliberately go after opposition midfielders, good luck to him. Like McQualter says, if how whole team had a similar level of competitive fire we'd be much better off.

But AFL umpires are a ridiculously petty bunch, and the rules are so subjective that they can and do shaft people. And conversely they are often just as enthralled by stars as your average fan.

If Harley were to make one concrete change it would be to never ever argue with the umpires, never moan when a decision goes against him and honestly, use the star power he's got to build good relationships with them- bluntly he can be as dirty as he likes with the opposition and carry on like a pork chop to the crowd as much as he wants, but it's absolutely worth his while to suck up to the umps. You look at the way someone like Daicos, Paddy Cripps, Petracca or Gawn gets umpired, that's what you want to aspire to.

I thought it was a bit embarrassing and said as much on the main board

Well done JHF and Butters on besting Jack Hutchinson, must have been really hard for you

If JHF punched Daicos in the throat like he did to harley, his corpse would be hanging at AFL house right now to set an example

Oh, sorry. Carry on.

Just in time for their date with the kissed on the dick Hawks, **** me.

Serously, that's really disappointing and not what I hoped for at all, I was quite specific about facial fractures. Anyway just happy he got to celebrate such a big time win against a hardened opponent before his season finished and Port's window slammed shut tighter than rioli's guernsey.

Not much on their injury list either compared to ours. Not sure Ratugolea is the star the commentators tried to make sound.
