ESSENDON BOMBERS

HahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAahahahaHAHAHA.
We started slow in the first quarter which probably raised the eyebrows of every Essendon fan, considering the youthful nature of the Hawthorn list, but eventually clicked and put the foot on the gas. Save for a small period of time in the fourth, we didn't let up, either.
An utterly wholesome Sunday afternoon at the G for those in red and black.
Zach Merrett had the clamps put on him by Hawks tagger Finn Maginness, but worked hard to lose him at the stoppages before Sam "Midget a-hole" Mitchell let him run free in the second half. Merrett finished with 29 touches in his first game as Dons skipper.
Darcy Parish was at his productive best, picking up 37 possessions and constantly providing a clearance at the contest.
Archie Perkins played his best game for the club, picking up 3 goals and constantly providing an attacking option through the forward line.
Will Setterfield drew ire from Carlton fans when he was at their club, but he dropped into our midfield straight away and performed brilliantly last week. He was also the first person to Alwyn Jr, Weids, and Walla when they kicked their goals, which is great to see. Dodo got his man.
Mason Redman just picked up where he left off last year. Dominant off half-back, providing so much run from the frankly pathetic Hawthorn forward line that it wasn't funny. Well, it was kind of funny. Left unchecked once again to pick up a handball from Zach and slotted his second completely unopposed.
Jordan Ridley looks to be back to his absolute best and somehow found himself scoring his first goal in his 69th game.
Weideman competed all day in his first outing in red and black, and found himself with an outstanding purple patch in the 2nd quarter, kicking 2 goals and one behind in about 5 minutes.
Alwyn Jr. Kid is going to be an absolute star, just like his brothers Jayden and Alijah. And they're all ours.
I love the father-son rule.

And, last but not least.
Welcome back Walla. What a genuine superstar.

GOLD COAST SUNS

This was over before it began.
The Suns go into 2023 with the footy world watching them, thinking that this will be the year that they break the duck and make their way into September footy, taking some huge scalps.
After conceding the first 5 goals of the game last week, however, it was evident they wouldn't be getting the chocolates against the rampaging Swans, looking to make amends for their dismal showing in last year's Grand Final.
The Suns were forced into constant turnovers by the immense Sydney pressure, and couldn't get any flow to their attack. They battled hard but the gap in class between a Grand Finalist and a potential Top 8 team had never been starker.
Skipper Jarrod Witts was the Suns best player on the field, finishing with 25 touches and 10 clearances from the ruck, whilst Matt Rowell finished with 28 touches and tried all night.
Save for a small moment early in the second where David Swallow scored to reduce the margin to 14 touches, the Suns never really got going after the first-quarter avalanche of Sydney goals.
After an 18-month absence from AFL level footy due to a knee reconstruction, Suns key forward Ben King returned and looked every bit as rusty as you'd think after such a long time away. He finished with 5 touches and a goal in a night that really wasn't made for tall key forwards.

Selection Table.jpg

You don't mess with a functioning formula, and the Bombers were certainly functioning nicely last week. With Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti succumbing to a minor quad strain after his last quarter showing (which isn't overly surprising), he has dropped out of the side to recover. One would imagine that Matt Guelfi would be the perfect replacement for him in the sub vest, whilst Massimo D'Ambrosio gets maximum minutes in the VFL.

The Suns have taken the axe to the team after a dismal showing last week, with Davies and Farrar dropping from the side, alongside the huge shock in seeing Mabior Chol dropped with them. A bizarre move from the Suns considering he was among their best players last year, but his showing last week was ordinary to say the least. Small forward Malcolm Rosas returns to the side to provide some spark to what was a stagnant forward line against the Swans, whilst Lachie Weller has made an outstanding recovery from an ACL rupture in June last year. He will play his first game back since his reconstruction today. Go well, Lachie.

The Rant.jpg

No real need to rant this week as all is well when the Dons win.

Just one small thing - the Footy media.

What is this obsession with doom and gloom? We have a great win against an old rival, and the only thing that these gargoyles on the footy shows can talk about is the backroom tensions in our staff. Does my head in.

And another thing; two new podcasts/shows officially endorsed by the AFL about TRADES?! IT IS MARCH. ROUND TWO.

No wonder people are turning these shows off.

Up the Planes.

The Tip.jpg

I suspect we're going to be in for a much tougher fight today, but we should be good enough to come away with the win.

Bombers by 31.

“Welcome back to ESSENDON. Versus. THE SUNS.”

“Who’s your tip for today Dermott?”

“I’m going to go with ESSENDON.”

“I’ll disagree with you there Derm, my tip is THE BOMBERS.”

I remember us kicking 15 goals against them in a quarter and Reimo kicking 8 that day. The only time I can recall a bombers crowd wanting the opposition to score. God damn they sucked. Now they suck a little less. Please win bombers.

Was Walla really out with an injury or more of a rest/continue to build type thing?
Pretty sure I read he was probably a 50/50 proposition this week, sounds like a very minor injury and we probably just don’t want to risk it.
