If one relies on stats Logue was After Pearce Suban Ryan Cox Dumin in Disposals so how was he BOG ?

If one relies on stats Lachie Won the Brownlow last year and Kennedy won the normsmith.

Maybe not bog but he was in the top 3-4 hence "arguably"

I am not anti Spurr but I want all our players to be held accountable and to put the best 22 on the field we can. He only had 3 intercepts for the game. The lowest of all our defenders I think, so it's not like he was some intercept marking God like some are making out. Can someone point me to a few passages of play where he did good things? I have honestly struggled to find some and that did surprise me.

Maybe you're spot on and Spurr had a bad game - you've gone into detail to back up an opinion of a player that you've likely had for some time i.e. that it wasn't a one off bad performance.

In the post-match the coach mentioned some issues in defence in the 3rd quarter. Something about dominating - except that Essendon scored a goal nearly every time they entered their forward 50 in that term - so I imagine they're looking to address what went wrong defensively.

Overall though he said he was happy with the performance of the defenders on Essendon's 3 smalls. It looked to me that Spurr for the most part looked after Fantasia who got away a bit in the first quarter but had little impact afterwards.

They coaches have already identified some areas of concern and when they look back on the game they have better video options to make judgements than the ones we see on the televised coverage.

Can't see Crozier going back to the backline as he won't take the place of IBBO or the developing Hughes.

Hughes is coming along ok - similar to Ibbotson in that he's tall enough to take a 3rd defender.

Ball movement out of defence has been our major problem since the middle of 2015. There are midfields that will match ours and better ours and put the ball into our defensive 50m and we've got to have a better method of getting it out.

I think it will take time - maybe till this time next season to go through the process of finding the right mix with the players on our list, and with that will come some instability. Maybe in time Weller will progress to the midfield and I think because of a lack of run, Stephen Hill keeps getting dropped back there to give us some drive.

I'm in two minds about where Crozier can play his best football - always thought he could be an attacking/defending winger - but the issue at AFL level is he can't find enough of the ball - except for that patch last year when he was tried off half-back. He's an option there because at the moment we haven't got it right. Overall, we seem a bit slow down back.

Who is going to give us more drive out of defence, Crozier, Ibbo, Sutcliffe or Sherro?

Hi Guys, sorry for asking an out of topic question, Any one have an idea what is the best time to go and watch players training? It is written 9.30 am tomorrow at VGK Oval.. what time we will be able to interact with players--- is it before training(9.30) or after training(11.30)?
Thank you

There's got to be more options than those 4. Crozier if he was free to read the play and back his judgement in marking he both has the pace and kicking skills and could play the spare role better than Ibbotson does when we're attacking, although Ibbotson looks great when we're lining up across the centre and we've got the ball locked in our forward 50m. Maybe we have to recruit someone like JJ. We definitely have to give games to Ryan sooner than later if he can string another month of good WAFL games together.

Long term there's too many unknowns on the preferred mix. When does A Pearce come back, when does MJ call it a day, will Sheridan ever be able to match if physically in one on one's to be a running defender, and it depends on how tall or small the opposition set up.

Like most, I'm of the opinion there has to be change, but that it doesn't happen next week - because there's already a fair bit of inexperience in the current combo with Weller, Hamling and Hughes being relatively new.

Spurr and Ibbotson have age against them but they're are experienced.

As to next week vs Richmond, which is where this thread is - I'm not sure who plays against Martin when he is up forward (likely alternating with Caddy) - and who plays on the other 3 smalls/mediums in the Richmond line up. (I've read that Richmond could make some minor changes. Lloyd, Lennon and possibly Bolton all under consideration from their VFL form if they're to make a change up forward - or they might play an extra tall with their ruckman Nankervis returning).

Last time we beat Richmond was at the MCG 2015, Spurr took Martin out of the game (the infamous water squirt incident that cost them a 50m) and the game before that = Richmond broke our 9 game winning streak at home with Martin best on ground - and Spurr didn't play.

Lots moved on since then, but I suspect Spurr would be high in consideration for that role again.

He wasn't any better in the 2nd and 4th but I can't be bothered writing up a long analysis if people just rebut it with "but he had 100% DE rubbish". Dawson used to get 100% DE - enough said. I need to watch the first quarter again because I think that must be where people have seen him do some good things.

Would love to hear a semi decent argument from you if you have it in you :)
Do you really think anyone on here really wants your long analysis. As I said in an earlier post Analysis Paralysis.

9.30am is an Ok time but Don't expect to interact with the players as much as happened at Freo unless it is an open day at the new set up at Cockburn. If any come over to the roped off area at the end of training that is a bonus in my experience as one of the semi regular attendees. Go into the main reception area at the middle of the complex and straight ahead is where the Dockers Shop and Team store are located and the Dockers reception staff will direct you to the stairs down (then a right turn) to the viewing area.

Do you really think anyone on here wants to read your drivel. How about you do us all a favour and bugger off.

FWIW I like reading other peoples opinions on how the game went and WTG's posts are always a good read.

We still have a few too many old boys in defence and need to start cycling through some youngsters. Next year will be here soon and I don't want to be left with old and slow Ibbo, Spurr and MJ with little experienced backup.

Collins should come in for Ibbo and release MJ for the loose/3rd man up role. He is undersized as a KPD anyway. This year is the perfect year to keep mixing it up, get some experience in the youngsters. Collins for Ibbo will not be the difference between winning and losing.

From what is written on here, it does make perfect sense that this week against the Tigers a smaller,
faster back line is on the cards.
But in the future I can honestly see Hamling getting towelled up like against WC. I really don't see
why we would want Hamling to take the power forwards, when he could be running off his opponent,
creating more.

Agree, as much as I like peel to win back to back, I take the feedback here that I should prioritise freo ahead of my beloved thunder. Smooth transition is needed in a rebuilding year. Freo actually got nothing to lose playing Collins in rebuilding year , as last year he only get the chance to play due to injuries to a.pearce and MJ , with a.pearce on LTI I think this is the best time for Collins to learn from MJ when he is still around ( retirement) plus building some chemistry with hamling , even if freo trade somebody better in , freo still need to wait until end of the season.

I want to see Logue put in a solid block of forn with Peel first. Has plenty of potential. At this stage no change. Good blend of players at the moment.

Hamling is our FB, that's it. He's not a rebound defender.

Ibbo, Spurr, need to be kept on their toes, the new shiny toys are starting to look good. Also I think
it is finally sinking in with Ross, that talent wins the close games over system.
If JJ is available who honestly thinks there's a place for these two?

JJ would be a tremendous help to our backline (but at what cost? and I am not keen on giving up on another relatively low draft pick - that's not rebuilding). Keep developing Weller, JJ has had plenty of stinker games as well on his way to being a decent player. Weller just might end up better.

So friendly as per usual. Use the ignore button please Danny rather than respond like this to a post that wasn't even directed at you.

I think we need to persist with Logue, but I don't like the idea of trying to develop a player by making him a switch man right from the start.
Defence is our weakest point, he needs to go there and stay there until he has it locked down.

Probably Logue for Ibbotson is all I'd consider at this point.

I'm personally starting to have a slight change in the drop Ibbo call.

If I may make a cricketing connection. He's basically the Mark Waugh of our side.

I'm by no means saying he's a freak, just that some people give off this 'laid back nature' and when they stuff up it reflects poorly. Now again don't get me wrong, he's made a couple of genuine howlers, but for the main part he does actually do his job adequately. So I guess it's about how much do we put up with the howler if everything else being equal he is doing his job?

I think we have a reasonable balance of youth and youngsters. This balance is equally important. The onfield leadership and direction can't be underestimated.

I don't actually see A NEED to make changes. Perhaps Pearce comes in for someone, but for that someone to work on some aspect of their game at WAFL level. At the same time Pearce was dropped and should show 2 games of substance before being in the recall books. Just my opinion, but only one game at WAFL level isn't exactly enough to warrant instant inclusion.
