RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Only have information for the first round of players. This is based on needs and where I think players will be drafted. The fourth round I didn't have much of an idea on players so I put in players that I new a bit about and what the teams needed. A bit different to other phantom drafts but hopefully not bad. Please comment.

#1 TOM SCULLY – Melbourne

Gifted onballer who has already drawn favourable comparisons with Blues' star Chris Judd. Scully enhanced his prospects of going No.1 at the next draft by averaging 25 possessions at the championships. His total of 26 clearances over the carnival more than doubled the next best tally on his team.

#2 JACK TRENGOVE – Melbourne

Skippered his side and averaged 23 possessions a game. Booted five goals and brought others into the game with 10 score assists. He was ranked third overall by Champion Data.

#3 KANE LUCAS – Richmond

Lucas’ game combines serious football class with terrific running power. He is an outside midfielder but he plays that role close to perfection. His biggest drawback is his very slight frame, but hopefully he can overcome this once in the AFL system. Has excellent kicking skills and always stands out.

#4 ANTHONY MORABITO – Fremantle

At 190 centimetres and 90 kilograms Morabito is tall and powerful for a midfielder but make no mistake he doesn’t look out of place on the ball at all. Often reading the play in contests beautifully Morabito possesses that ability to power out of a pack at full speed and then hit a forward with a long left foot pass, a trait that makes him stand out at his current level.

#5 DUSTIN MARTIN – North Melbourne

Dustin Martin is a good quality attacking midfielder who can kick well off both feet. He also has good balance and can keep his feet when in a contest. Martin averaged over 21 touches in the AFL under 18 championships, which is a decent effort for a midfielder. Martin is also an AFL under 18championships All-Australian player. He was named in the team as a centre.

#6 JOHN BUTCHER – Sydney

The clear standout key forward in the early part of 2009, Butcher is a shade under 200cm (and could keep growing). Outstanding performance for Vic Country in the 2008 U18 Championships. Has great contested marking ability and is excellent at ground level for a big man. With so much upside and ability it is hard to see him drafted outside the top three in 2009.

#7 GARY ROHAN – West Coast

A medium forward that has the versatility to play back or in the midfield, Rohan has allowed a lot of flexibility to his coaches thus far and seems likely to continue in that vein going forward. In his time forward Rohan has proven too quick and agile for players who can match him in the air and too athletic and strong for those who have proven capable of matching him at ground level. His forward pressure, a favorite attribute at AFL level, has been fantastic and this was highlighted in the Under 18 Championships where he earned All Australian honors and averaged four tackles a game.

#8 LUKE TAPSCOTT – Port Adelaide

A strong, medium-tall forward, Tapscott is not a high possession winner but he is one of those players who hurts the opposition with his disposals. Plays mainly close to goal and is an excellent finisher. Likes to bustle through in a straight line and has an outstanding goal sense.

#9 DANIEL TALIA – Hawthorn

Already key position height at 195cm, Talia is a fierce competitor and has the ability to play forward or back. He is quick for his size and strong overhead.

#10 KOBY STEVENS – Essendon

A hard working and powerful midfielder Koby Stevens has already carved out a good reputation in the right circles and looks very likely to go in the first round if not the top 10 picks of the draft.

#11 JACK FITZPATRICK – Carlton

Versatile for an athlete who stands at 201cm, and his flexibility makes him an attractive proposition. Can fill a key position at either end of the ground and should be a first-round pick at this point.

#12 BEN CUNNINGTON – Brisbane

One of Vic Country's best and an Under-18 All-Australian. The versatile prospect has been likened to Brad Sewell, and averaged 20 disposals per match during the U18 champs. His ferocious attack on the ball and hard-running attributes keeps him right in the mix for the first round of November’s NAB AFL Draft.

#13 LEWIS JETTA – Adelaide

Extremely quick player who provides great run and carry. Team-oriented with clean hands and great agility. Can play a variety of positions.

#14 MITCH DUNCAN – Collingwood

Lead-up forward who presents well and has already played senior footy at WAFL level. Averaged 20 possessions a game at the champs and booted eight goals.

#15 ANDREW MOORE – Western Bulldogs

The younger brother of Richmond defender Kelvin has been likened to Swan Ryan O'Keefe. Still a strong prospect and was particularly impressive early in the U18 champs.

#16 MATTHEW PANOS – Geelong

Matthew Panos is an athletic, sily-smooth 193cm, 18 year old key forward from Norwood. He has a great set of hands and a long precision kick, as demonstrated when he led SA in goal-kicking at the NAB AFL U/18 National Championships in 2009. He was selected All Australian Full Forward of the U/18 Championships.

#17 ALLEN CHRISTENSON – St Kilda

#18 JAKE CARLISLE – Melbourne
Can play a variety of roles effectively. Strong hands, nice foot skills and an ability to read the play well are highlights of his game. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009.

#22 RYAN BASTINAC – Sydney

Rebounding defender with terrific ball winning ability. Strong performer for WA at NAB AFL U18 Championships receiving All-Australian honours. Good user by both hand and foot.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Looks very good from a Swans perspective and would be ecstatic with Butcher... could you possibly justify for me why Kane Lucas is at #3???

Ryan Bastinac is a tall too so why would we draft two talls with the first two picks after Johnston last year.

Bastinac is 183cm so not tall. Lucas is at 3 because I believe he may drop from what i've seen of him, very clean, smart, good awareness, etc. from what i've seen of morabito he's been a bit selfish, and doesn't look for players he just bombs the ball in.

I think he may be meaning why is he at 3 he should be at 7 not why is he at 3 he should be at 1 or 2;) Anyway would be stoked if the draft worked out this way for Brisbane. A great midfielder than a super fast outside midfielder than a utility and than Simon Potts who I rate very highly!

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Good effort and it's good to see you mixed it up abit.

I don't see us taking Fitzpatrick, at this stage his performances do not warrant a selection that high and he is far too inconsisten. Even though the blues are after a KPF I don't think we will reach for one, we won't pass up Cunnington if he slides that far (which I doubt), he would provide us with another hard nut midfielder which we are in need of. As a bonus he can go forward and kick goals.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Can't see us taking Lucas if he is small framed. I hope our recruiters would have learnt that by now.

If Black and Griffiths are available for our second rounder we'll take one of them.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Great read mate.
But I don't think we will be taking Lucas at 3.
Are you gunna do more write-ups later?

Or find more information to copy and paste from? :p

As much as I love Mitch Taylor (Darryl White-esque), I can't imagine him being anything more than a rookie pick.

He wont stay that way. It's because hes tall. I dont know many 180year old kids 189cm and 80 kilos, far more healthy weight than those kids getting picked up at 184cm and 83-85 kilos.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Great work mate did you do your own explanations?
no. grabbed info from different websites so thats why i origanlly stopped at the 17 because some of the players onwards had little info on them

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Have added some more write ups just trying to find some info on Ah Chee, Hartigan, Luff, Houghton, Ledin, Sewell, Temel, Barlow and Daw.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Max Gawn with our 3rd rounder would be stupendous. Doubt he'll slide that far even with the knee concern though.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Troy Taylor sounds exciting... hope the Bombers do draft him, could be the x-factor we need to replace Lovett.

Majak Daw hey!!!! I hope he gets drafted so why not the Bombers :)

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

You obviously have no idea what the bulldogs need.

Why would we take Moore over Panos? We need a tall forward not another mid sized one, have 30 of those.

Were also in need of quick, outside mids, not more insiders.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

well when i looked at your list I thought there were quite a few outside mids and inside mids so i gave you best availabe. plus you obviously don't know what you need because you have a few kp players and you don't need panos. many other doggies posters are saying that you don't need ruckmen or kpf because of grant, roughead, cordy, and possibly hall

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Have searched a few phantom drafts looking for one name that hasn't appeared yet- Josh Thomas.

This kid will be drafted by Collingwood in the 2nd round IMO (provided he is still there). It will be very similar to Dayne Beams scenario. Pies may even opt to use their first pick on him (although unlikely-stranger things have happened though).

He rejected an offer to join the GC17 after meeting Derek Hine who convinced him to enter the draft. There is certainly an "in-principle" agreement that if he is available at one of Collingwood's selected picks (2nd round is my gut feel), they will take him.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

if he rejected an offer to go to the gc17 then wouldn't he not be old enough for the draft. (just unsure). Haven't heard about him before so thats why i haven't put him in the draft

See Byron Sumner. Although I think NM could take him with their last pick.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Not bad...Here's some of my thoughts for better or worse.

Uh, I think Dustin Martin could go at Richmond's pick 3, but pick 5 is a fair call.

Kane Lucas at 3 is a big call. I wouldn't have him in my top 8 players tbh...

West Coast are very keen on Lewis Jetta and will have to part with pick 7 if they want him as he will not last till their 2nd pick.

Jack Fitzpatrick isn't a 1st round prospect i'm led to believe. His field kicking and decision making need massive improvement, so he's a bit more of a project player at this stage.

Cunnington is a top 6 prospect and I doubt he'd slide past Port's 1st pick as he's exactly the type of player they should be looking for..

Mitch Duncan isn't a 1st round prospect imo.

Aaron Black will probably go higher than pick 20, may even be around the cusp of the top 10.

Bastinac is another who will probably go higher than what you have him as. His kicking skills are rated by recruiters, and as we know, kicking skills are 'king' these days. I'd say 10-16 for Bastinac, but may even slip into the top 10.

Ben Griffiths is a very talented KPP with better footskills than Butcher. He would probably go top 10 if he didn't have the injury problems. Still reckon he'll be around the 10-16 mark with the lack of KP depth.

Brad Sheppard is a solid top 20 pick, with the potential to go 1st round...

Melksham should be rated a bit higher, perhaps around 20-25.

Callum Bartlett could be a bit of a smoky. Missed all of this season through injury but was rated a top 10 prospect at the start of the year. I'm thinking recruiters haven't forgotten about his pace and footskills. Top 25 for him i'd think...

Josh Thomas could be a 1st rounder too. The QLD'er has drawn comparisons to Dayne Beams, and Collingwood might have to part with pick 14 if they want him..

Pretty good effort :thumbsu:

He rejected GC cause he wants to play AFL next year. He's basically been told by at least one other club, namely Collingwood, that he'll be selected if he nominates for the draft, ala Beams last year.

He's an inside midfielder with good pace who uses the ball very well by foot. Not overly tall, but he's rated very highly, and GC are pretty disappointed because he was a required player for them...
