Same draft. Same TAC club. Similar game style as hard running mids who can win their own ball or play "outside".

Who has had the better career so far and who will go on to have the better career?

Me thinks some opinions on this pole would have gone differently two years ago

I personally think Scully started to hit a seam last year & had some great games in a run with role as well as a normal role. Although Scully was seen along way out because of his extraordinary professionalism his body & game took a while to adjust to the tempo but from now he will be a great player.

Bastinac did not get tagged early in his career & was able to develop a little quicker having not necessarily better games but more consistency. I expect they would be travelling along now at an even keel but one is paid triple the other.

I think Bastinac will have a huge year this year. I also expect Scully to have a big one too.

Bastinac is a tiny bit better than Scully.

If Scully hadn't had the knee issue I think he'd have shown a hell of a lot more than his current output. I still remember him picking up 40 touches against us when we were a top 4 side and almost getting the Dee's over the line.

Scully's worst decision was to leave the Dees for big $$$ and he will always be in the spotlight with people just waiting to jump on him when he has a bad game etc and this is the norm as players rarely get mentioned on BF when they are playing well or in a positive light.

Over the course of their careers to date Bastinac has been better so far but things change quickly in this game and i think Scully has the higher ceiling and more potential but who knows if we will ever see it. Bastinac is also playing in the better team and has little to no pressure on him to perform and pretty much roams free all the time as the other good Mids at North get the attention/shut down roles from the opposition.

I only voted Scully because i think in 5 yrs time he will be better as his team around him improves.

Worth noting that Bastinac turned down cash to stay, where Scully left.

Both inconsequential to their teams fortunes and not worth their pay cheques so let's call it a draw.

Yeah nah, Bastinac very important to North.

Scully for mine.

I'd be curious to know how many people watched him in 2013. I thought he had a great year and was seriously productive. Tapered off a bit at the end of the year, but that's to be expected.

Will his knee hold up?

More pertinently, the addition of Dal Santo to the North midfield means one extra bloke to run a bit "freerer".

A lot of times that will be Basti.

That's dealing with a lot of ifs, but Scully's knee held up fine this year. I see no reason to see why that would not continue into the future. Seems to be managed correctly now.

You could make the same argument that Scully will be 'free-er' when Shiel, Whitfield and Treloar deserve serious attention. Perhaps as soon as next year. At the moment if Scully is used offensively he's sat on pretty heavily. Especially if Ward isn't playing.

Yeah, all fair points. I'm not slagging Scully, I think he could and hopefully will become a fine footballer. Has to overcome injury issues (which he seems to) and the simple unavoidable fact that he got drafted to Melbourne in a period when they couldn't develop a complex.

Bastinac is more of a goal kicker, but he also plays a lot under the roof and is clearly earmarked by Scott as the bloke that runs into the fwd line to get the easy goal.

This bit of play (Basti on the end, watch the whole 33 secs!) sums this up:

Scully's worst decision was to leave the Dees for big $$$ and he will always be in the spotlight with people just waiting to jump on him when he has a bad game etc and this is the norm as players rarely get mentioned on BF when they are playing well or in a positive light.

I disagree, firstly, I doubt Scully cares what bigfooty thinks, and being in Sydney, Scully doesn't have that much pressure on him, what's more, he seemed to get top dollar for his services. In terms of his career and his wallet, he made a good decision.

Scully cant just take it easy when he is on $1,000,000 a year! He isn't paid to just develop and take his time and wait for his team mates to magically become stars one day. You build a massive losing culture, you stay a losing culture. GWS will become a breeding ground for the clubs in major footy states (VIC, SA and WA). Picking up quality kids at massive discounted prices after a few years doesn't bother me.

Ryan Bastinac, really like the way he goes about it.

Pretty even. I don't rate either particularly highly, and expect them both to be remembered at the end of their careers as just "good solid players".

If I had a gun to my head and had to say who will be the better player, I'd say... Bastinac. Just.

Bastinac, without bias.

Yeah, the way I see Bastinac is that not he's not top shelf midfield elite (Wells/Cunningtpn/Harvey for us) but he's a very good player and in today's game, you need to have the depth in the midfield as well as the stars, and Basti in "our 2nd mid rotation" is better than a lot of blokes in other teams 2nd mid rotation.

Basti will play 200+ games (barring injury) and hopefully figure in plenty of finals. That's a good result from a pick 21.

Scully though has the weight of pick 1 round his shoulders.

Not trying to turn this into a bagging of melbournes recruiting but

Scully over Bas

Trengove over cunnington

Watts over Ziebell

Our recruiters would have done the same of course, so it just shows that to a certain degree recruiting involves a lot of luck.

Use the players' proper names, please.

No clever placing of $ in place of 'S' and so on. It's not the Bay.

Bastinac has had the slightly better career to date, but picking who'll have the best career is difficult. For a former number 1 pick Scully has been a disaster. He hasn't progressed whatsoever.

His 5th year is clearly a big one for him.
