Great win Sainters!!!

Hope that Lukey Ball is ok.

That first quarter really hurt us, but your defense was far too good.

Hopefully The Saints can go on with it from here.

Stick it up those croweaters next week fellas!

Thanks Ben.
Ball is OK from what I hear.

How did you like the Maguire match on Hall ?

All the bad press he's received is just that - BAD press. He is a ripper.

I think Hall has helped play Maguire back into form.

Look for a repeat performance (if you make the finals).

oh wat a great win!!!! riewoldt is a true champion, stepping up with a great mark in the last quarter. ball another great, he continues to get head whacks tho.

Saints sink Swans in a slog

St Kilda has brought Sydney's winning run to an end with a thrilling two-point win over the reigning premiers at a slippery SCG on Saturday night.

In what turned out to be a thrilling finale, the Saints held off the fast-finishing Swans to win 7.10 (52) to 7.8 (50) in a result that could put sails in the Saints' season heading into the second-half of the year.

The Saints had looked to be cruising all night as they maintained a comfortable three-goal lead for the majority of the evening.

But the Swans, in a finish reminiscent of last year's famous semi-final win over Geelong, made a late charge.

Leading by 13 points at the last break, Brett Kirk kicked the opening goal of the final term at the 19-minute mark, and when Adam Schneider kicked his third at the 29-minute mark he cut the deficit to just two points.

But that's as close as the home side got. There was to be no fairytale finish this time, as the Saints held firm in the dying minutes despite Sydney throwing everything at them.

The much-anticipated rematch between Matt Maguire and Barry Hall was a lopsided affair, with the Saint enjoying a night out over the unusually quiet Hall. :)

Sam Fisher, Nick Riewoldt and Luke Ball, who copped a heavy knock and was stretchered from the field early in the final term, were other standouts for the winners in a victory that lifted them back into the top eight.

Sydney was best served by Adam Goodes, Brett Kirk and Jude Bolton, while Schneider helped lead the Swans' revival.

Goals were always going to be as precious as diamonds on a night when persistent drizzle made it tough for either side to play the kind of free-flowing footy they are accustomed.

And it was the Saints who acclimatised the better early on in the greasy conditions.

Debutante Michael Rix, one of three ruckman the visitors took into the game despite the weather, posted the game's first goal in the third minute, joining that exclusive club with a major with his first kick in the big time.

Saints star Riewoldt was effective in his role playing a kick behind the play as St Kilda seemed to be matching the home side at ground level, an area in which the Swans had been so dominant the previous six weeks.

It took until the 22nd minute for the term's only other goal. Fraser Gehrig found space to mark and kick truly and when the siren rang, the Saints had kept Sydney goalless for a quarter for the first time since the third term of last year's grand final.

The rain eased slightly in the second term and with it, the Swans looked a better team.

It took them just 14 seconds to register a goal in the second stanza, with Barry Hall slamming one home from the goal square although Brendan Goddard answered for the Saints after a wayward Leo Barry kick out of defence proved costly.

The teams traded goals but Sydney couldn't bridge the quarter time margin.

Gehrig continued to look dangerous and some of his more unheralded teammates - the likes of Fisher and Mark McGough - led an even and committed Saints outfit at ground level.

Regular performers Goodes, 150-gamer Bolton and Kirk were doing plenty of hard stuff around the packs but with the ball like a cake of soap at times, the 14-point deficit at the long change might have seemed double that.

The Saints seemed to have the answers during the third term. Schneider answered Jason Blake's goal but when Leigh Montagna dribbled one through from 30m, St Kilda was back out to a 20-point lead and looking well on its way to the four points.

But Schneider's second goal late in the term reduced the margin to 13 points, giving the home side a sniff and setting up the exciting finale.

The Swans have a week off during the split round before they meet Collingwood in a round 12 blockbuster at Telstra Stadium, while St Kilda faces the in-form Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

Grant Thomas outcoached Roos today.

Even if the umpires had their way and Swans had won, the coaching award would still have to go to Thomas. The Saints were hard and tough and didn't shirk their tasks. Everyone put in manfully.

Exceptional were Matt Maguire who crucifed Hall and Nick Riewoldt who played a very different role superbly. Both performances were absolutely crucial to the win.

I had to chuckle when Thomas in the post-match interview just said "One all" in response to the question of Maguire's game against Hall. Extremely dry response I thought.

The whole team contributed, but I was also impressed with Leigh Fisher's game. I haven't seen that much of him (none of us have, unfortunately) but his surety of delivery and ability to quickly sum up the correct option was very good all night.

That was a season-defining win. Let's hope it continues next week.

This win puts us one game out of the top 4.

If we can win next Friday against Adelaide, that will set our season up.

This post is from Saintsational analysing our draw with respect to opposition recovery time versus ours:
Leo.J said:
I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but anyway despite having 11 games with a 6 day break there are only 6 games where we have less recovery time that our opponents (in red font). There are 9 games (in orange font) where we have more recovery time than our opponents, and 7 games with equal recovery time.

At first glimpse the draw looks bad but with further investigation it may not be too bad. I did this last night so all may not be accurate.

The 2 bad games concerning recovery time are rounds 5 and 15. All bar one interstate trip (rd.15) we have either more or equal recovery than our opponents.

There are some interesting ones also, Geelong play the Lions at the Gabba in rd.18, then play us in rd.19 and we have 2 days more rest. Rd. 2 we play the Lions off a 6 day break but they only have 5 days off.

Recovery time seems to be a big factor these days and as far as this is concerned the draw isn't too bad, as far as who we play twice thats another issue which I'm pretty sure has been done before.

So far we have won three and lost once (Port @ AAMI) against teams who have had a shorter break than us.

We have a 2 - 2 record (Freo and Geelong) against teams who have had a longer break than us.

We have one win and two losses (WCE @ Subi and Melbourne @ MCG) against teams with the same break as us.

Adelaide fits into the latter group, if we win this one we go to 2 - 2 in this group.

After the break we play 5 matches where we have had a longer break than the opposition, 2 matches where our break is shorter, and 3 matches where we have the same break.

There are 5 matches at Telstra Dome, 2 matches at MCG (both on a shorter break), 1 at Aurora, 1 at Subi, and 1 at the Gabba.

Predictions:
If we continue to perform at a similar level to the first half of the season, this is how I see us going:
Win at least 3 of 5 matches where we have the longer break.
Win 2 of 4 of the matches where we have same break.
Win 1 of 2 of the matches where we have lesser break.

Going by this we would win at least 6 more matches - giving us only 12 - 13 wins for the season.
We would barely scrape into the eight on 12 wins, and be somewhere in the bottom half of the eight with 13 wins.

An optimistic scenario would see us win 4 of 5, 3 of 4, and 2 of 2 in the above categories.
This unlikely result would see us win 9 more matches, giving us 15 for the season and a possible crack at a top 4 spot.
