Sam Mitchell - 300 Games

Dead set legend family man, amazing awareness of the game, sublimely skilled, premiership captain. Gets up after being steamrolled dozens of times every week to lead his teammates. Cuts the angles, releases others with most touches into highly dangerous spots and has notched up over 200 brownlow votes with a tagger up his arse semi-permanently.
His lunging game saving tackle on Shane Tuck (IIRC) all those years ago is said to have almost saved Clarko as coach. For a bloke called 'stump', he is leaving a massive footprint.

67 goals in 299 games for a supposed elite midfielder.....should be better record than that! Maybe if he didn't spend his whole career accumulating easy possessions behind the play, his record might have been better

That's what most call a selfless mentality, he dishes it out to others....its one of the major reasons why he's tripled your football clubs total Premiership count.

He is kind of like the Kobe Bryant of the AFL. Bryant only ever had one MVP in his career and it was one where people argued there were statistically better players that season. You could even say that Bryant never had a season where he was the best in the league that year. Despite that Bryant's pivotal role in many championships and consistency over his career make him one of the greatest players ever.

Mitchell's haul of brownlow votes without a medal(yet...Watson?) and host of premiership medals is a testament to his consistency and pivotal role in an elite team.

Didn't see him looking at the ball or for the ball there. Did see him put an elbow into Duryea's forehead though.

There's a reason he got off, not much in that, free kick and 50 all day. Kneeing someone is pathetic. Like I said, champion player without a doubt, but also a sniper. Hawthorn fan logic is it's not humanly possible for a hawks player to be dirty, just disregard what Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis have done yeah?

Mitchell has been a gun and deserves all the plaudits but I think comments like possibly the greatest hawk of all time, and up there along side Leigh Matthews prove that when in the moment we get carried away.

In 10, 15 or 20 years will Hawk supporters really rate him along side Matthews, Dunstall, Hudson, Platten etc etc.

He will be rated highly but IMO not a patch on some of the names above. Personally I rate Hodge higher and Crawf atleast the equal of Mitchell.

Mitchell>Hodge>Crawf.

Hawthorn top five (no order) IMO.
Lethal - Dunstall - Mitchell - Hudson - Scott.

Matthews will always be No.1. Whether he stacks up against Piggy and Huddo who knows..........comfortably sits amongst the rest.

Well done Sam a fantastic achievement, I can remember watching you in a preseason game when you was first drafted in Tasmania, my son being a Hawks supporter took us along to a after game function where we got the chance to have a quick chat and we as a family have been a fan of yours ever since. Once again well done Sam. Ps Can you have a quiet one Sunday against my beloved Tigers

In 10, 15, 20 years something that might not be in perspective for us now, given the team are still playing and look fallible, is the fact that they have won three flags in a row, and have featured in four consecutive grand finals. Will probably add to that this year.

Current players never look as good as idealised champions of the past. I think that history will provide some perspective - but certainly not in the way you think.

Agreed. Past champions are always rated higher, as their bad games are forgotten.

Mitchell will no doubt be rated a top 5 player in Hawthorn history, now and 10 years time.

Why do hawks fans get mad when I state the obvious? Did he or did he not knee multiple players? Exactly.

I'm not mad, I just dont think this is the thread for it.

If most people have a negative opinion on a player, they are able to keep it out of a 300 game toast thread.

But I guess its a bit fanciful to expect everyone to have self control and tact.
