Though they are different types of player they both boast two of the best football resumes ever. Which player had/has the better career?

I am aware it may be unfair to Mitchell as he may have another 2-3 years left. I feel he is already at a level so close to Goodes I struggle to split them.

Mitchell could easily have been a two time Norm Smith medalist had votes gone his way and may already be an unannounced Brownlow medalist. Captained a premiership in 2008(although his worst grand final performance). 4 time premiership player. Likely top 2 all time brownlow medal votes at careers end.

Goodes. Two Brownlows. Two premierships. Co-captain of 2012 premiership. 8th in all time AFL/VFL games played and still put in some stellar performances in his last season.

Sam Mitchell currently is top five best in the game at least. Always had this thought. He's been one of the best for years now and is most certainly one of the unluckiest never to win a Brownlow, considering his output season after season in a very good team. I'd take him over Goodes, Judd, Cousins etc any day.

Well after today's performance easily Mitchell!
At this end of his career would you likely have him as a top 3 all time Hawthorn player? Matthews, Dunstall... cannot think of many more I would put ahead of him.

I would assume most non Hawthorn fans would argue Mitchell>Hodge. Would Hawthorn fans feel the same?

I would certainly.

I've seen many good Hawthorn players during my lifetime and only Matthews and Dunstall are better then Mitchell.

As for this thread, it's hard to split them as Goodes during his prime was the better player but Mitchell in his 30's is playing better with age so he could very well overtake him when he retires.

I think many people have still forgotten just how good Goodes was during his prime in that 2003-2010 period. He was one of the best big men in the league.

Hodge is a favourite over Mitchell, but Mitchell is the better player and yes i would put him in the top 3

Since I've been watching Hawthorn weekly since 1996 Mitchell is the best Hawthorn player I've seen in that time.

I kind of feel like if you were starting a team from scratch you'd go Goodes who just had amazing versatility. If you just wanted a pure inside mid then Mitchell edges Goodes out. Both players had great longevity and performed at a very high level for a long time. Mitchell slightly more consistent, Goodes a bit better at his best.

Overall I think i'll vote Goodes just because having a guy of his height that could actually play really well in so many positions is just too good.

The fact Mitchell played a blinder just yesterday and Goodes is retired is going to distort things. Goodes' best footy is as good as the game as seen.

Great that Sam Mitchell is finally getting his dues as an all-time player though. Would comfortably have him ahead of Hodge, but I'm not in the media, so that's obvious.

I too would have him top 3 (fighting out third with Hudson). Matthews - Dunstall - Mitchell has a great ring to it.

What would be interesting would be if you took this discussion away from Football fanatics (such as those of us spending hours discussing football on an internet forum), and to the general public, where the media influence was more prominent.

I believe you'd have a decidedly different result.

Goodes is so underrated it's unbelievable. He's a top 3 player this century, only behind Ablett, and comfortably better than Mitchell IMO.

Does being a jack of all trades count against Goodes?
Jack of all trades, master of all. No, it makes him even better IMO.

Better for longer and more consistent.
Not sure how long he can go on for but with speed not being his weapon and his skills getting better could have a few years left yet.

Not a master of any. 17 disposals a game, 1 goal a game, he's mediocre on both fronts.
Won a Brownlow as a ruckman and a midfielder. Has kicked 40+ goals in a season on 3 occasions as a forward. Yeah, you're wrong.

Brownlows are irrelevant, show me this alleged elite performance in every position without appealing to awards.
