His situation a little worse than Freo letting on.
Has had bad reaction to appendicitis surgery and has been in and out of hospital.
Dockers Doctors giving no guarantee of when he can start training again.
Assuming he can't start for a while, which seems possible, he may struggle to be fit enough until significantly later in the season. Hopefully that's not the case.

Info from as close a source to Schammer as you can get.

Bad luck for the young fella - but it's nothing that hasn't already been reported here.

But he's a tough little bugger - he'll come back and be raring to go before too long. :thumbsu:

Bad luck for Byron. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him pushing for a spot again.

The upside is he wont be greatly missed and it might give the match committee a chance to bring someone off the rookie list.

Don't be so sure. I think our midfield is under huge pressure heading into this season. Crowley is running around with a knee brace. Schammer is probably out of action. Hasleby is still running laps as far as i know.

It leaves a lot of expectation on the older midfield brigade of Bell, Cook and McManus. I know we have Peake, Dodd, M.Carr, J.Carr, Headland, H.Black to fall back on.

But gee, you'd like everyone fit and firing and looking for a spot in the 22. I very much doubt any of the rookies could contribute greatly apart from Rumble. And he definately isn't a midfielder.

Too true.

With Byron though last year wasn't the year that it should have been. He regained a bit of ground later in the season but imo he plateaued when he should have been graphing upwards. He probably knows more then us how far he can go. This bout of illness might be the catalyst that will bring out his best. Not having him available definitely hurts our team's depth but I'm hoping a rookie will step and take over.

Why would a rookie need to come into the side? I think we have plenty of players on the main list that can come in and play AFL.

Anyone who thinks schammer isn't a big loss must be crazy. He is an integral part of our team, and if nothing else he adds great depth. There is absolutely no way any of our rookies could take his place, what it may do is encourage drum, browne, gilly, webster, dunn and ibbotson to train harder and fight it out for probably the only spot available in the team barring injuries.

Haselby has been with the main squad for a few weeks now, I would be surprised if he didn't play a role in the first pre-season game!

For mine Schammer can easily be replaced with Andrew Browne. Browne is probably a better defensive player than Schammer, both are shocking kicks at goal but Browne seems to find more of the ball.

yes my buddy browne is the ideal replacement for schammer. probably not as classy but shows more desperation(sometimes too much)

Browne has averaged 9.4 disposals in his 18 games for Freo. Schammer has averaged 15.3 disposals in his 77 games for Fremantle. Schammer has no problem finding the ball. I'm not knocking Browne. Just saying lets be realistic.

Schammer is an exceptional talent that can't be replaced. In his first few years he couldn't kick over a jam jar. Now that he's kicking longer it was a little inaccurate in 06. He will be a great player for us for 10+ years. Probably be one of the first few to play 300 games at Fremantle if not the first.

In my mind he's the long term replacement for Peter Bell. Once he builds his strength up his endurance is very similar. This is a huge setback in his career, and will be a noted ommission from the best 22. The good thing is, if he gets himself right by mid-year, he could be the X-factor come finals.

In my mind as well rgauci,

I also thought that Browney's main problem apart from spraying it a bit was that he did not get it enough.

I bet you got that from his myspace page.

That's pretty bad news though for all dockers fans.

Could this mean that Drummy gets Schammers spot? Hope so because i think Drum is going to be a very good player.

I would think that Drum is a pretty good chance of starting the season. Obviously the NAB Cup will play a large role in determining the last few spots in the 22. Who knows...maybe Dunn or Browne will set the NAB alight, or maybe the old guard in Cookie and Macca will make it impossible not to pick them. All in all I am loving our depth at the moment.

not a freo supporter, but i know byron and thought i would pass along that the situation is pretty bad (not sure what you are all being told in WA). he was this morning re-admitted to hospital and will again have surgury some time today.

after some on going problems, he went to see a new doctor who discovered he has a blocked bowel. no one is sure at this stage just how bad it is, or if any drastic treatment will be required.

even more concerning for byron is the fact that he has lost nearly 13kg's in the past few weeks. so it appears that even a best case scenario with his health, he is unlikely to play this year.

That's bad news, thanks for the update Bob.

Drum didn't leave the gym yesterday, I'm not sure if he has a problem or if he doesn't do all the sessions as a second year player. Hasleby didn't train yesterday. Browne looked good and was very involved, indicating he will play atleast a couple of NAB cup games.

I have also been led to believe it is much worse than the club are letting on. I no the club aren't painting a pretty picture, but i think they are covering up just how bad it is a little.

As someone who has had their appendix removed, I am well aware of the long recovery time required. One of the first things I noticed on the matter was that they said his appendix actually burst. This is much much worse than the already severe lay off from having them inflamed and removed. Can't be good if they burst. Im hoping round 10.

If that is indeed the diagnosis and surgery is required it may well spell the end of his whole career.

Don't want to sound alarmist but that is serious surgery with a long recovery period. And plenty of possible complications.

I hope I am dead wrong. And wish Byron my very best wishes.

Phfft my buddy scham the man will overcome it(and me picking him as my buddy) and make a impact, guys with his commitment and work ethic have no trouble once they get the all clear.I cant believe your writing him off so easily(at 21) and the some of the rubbish written. Is he ever going to lose the cant kick tag because I.M.O. its rubbish and he is no worse than anyone else, last year in the early rounds most of the problem was his decision making, kicking to a player and so many times a opposition player cut it off easily and dont forget he played in a position he has never played before. He will be missed as was hase and jlo playing below 100%.
