Scully isn't worth anything like $1.3M a year at this point in time, that's absolute lunacy and surely untrue.

It really doesn't matter what hes worth, they have the cap space and the cash to throw around, and if that means offering a young gun like Scully 1m+ per year to move clubs then they would be stupid not to do it.

Lets be honest here, GWS aren't going to be as attractive as the GCS I can't see them getting to many big names to jump ship, maybe a couple of B/C graders and an A grade player like Scully.

I'm presuming he means $1.3m a year for 5 years and not over 5 years.

If this is true, and I don't believe it for a second, then GWS are screwing themselves. Tying up $1.3m on one player who is effectively a first year player over 5 years would have to be the dumbest move ever by a club.

That salary would instantly put Scully as the no.1 paid player in the league, the pressure on the kid to perform would be enormous as soon as he walked into their rooms. It just doesn't make sense, it's not a rational rumour.

I could imagine the first year being front loaded for $1.3m and then clawing back over the 5 years, that's possible. The other issue I have with the Scully rumour is that I don't believe that Scully fits into their target group. GWS will be after fully matured bodies to assist their group of young stars, even with another pre-season under his belt he doesn't fit into this category.

I call BS
I agree the $1.3m per year being BS, considering we don't have a million dollar player this year.

Disagree on Scully not fitting their target group. It's unusual for a midfielder with his physical development to be a star in their 3rd season. They would want all the quality players they can get their hands on.

So Robert Walls is saying the other day Tom simply lied to us saying he hasnt spoken to them cos (correct me if im wrong) GWS arent allowed to do anything in regard to talking to players until their seasons are over now... or is that just in regard to physically signing a contract?

Pretty sure Gary Ablett Jr will be earning well over $1m for GC this year - perhaps up to $1.5m.

Footy salary inflation has well and truly begun.

BTW - irrespective of whether Scully stays or not, get used to the exact same speculation with Jack Trengove happening this time next year, as GWS get first crack at uncontracted players across 2 years..

always a possibility, but Trengove has made all the right noises about wanting to play at Melbourne now and in the future, don't see a reason to stress just yet.

Not to mention free agency next year as well... Little different for younger players but still an issue...

GWS will be paying over the odds for the first few years, but you gotta crack some eggs to make an omelette. Considering all the salary cap concessions that are available to GWS, it could pay off for them to overpay him now in hope that he lives up to his potential as being a superstar of the competition a few years down the track.

GWS can sign uncontracted players next year as well so paying Scully 1.3mill on a front loaded contract would greatly limit their ability to get another solid player next year.

I would be going for 2 guys instead of throwing everything at Scully.

Not as worried about Trengove because he seems as though he really wants to stay - but if GWS do take Scully, I dont think they can take Trengove because they can only take 1 player from each club.

Don't tell me the obvious comments man is talking through his ass again!
Let it go Robert! It was so 2 weeks ago, just stick to what you know and that's boring people with your obvious comments.

Too many players on that list I don't want to lose. Just look at the way Krakouer, Harbrow, Brown, etc slipped out without a whisper. Morton, Sylvia, Wonna, Gysberts, Maric, Green could do the same. Less worried about Scully to be honest.

+1

He could have a clash with the coaching staff, teammates or hell, maybe even Jim Stynes and think "Sod this, I'm off to GWS kthxbai"

Demon Tom's comments don't mean alot. They are a statement of 'current intent' in circumstances where he has not received an offer to play elsewhere. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out that if there are no other offers on the table that his current intent would be to stay at the club and hope to be a one club player.

I started this thread with a pretty black and white approach and I stand by that approach. Having said that I believe Demon Tom when he says he has not received another offer and that being the case he should play every game this year and receive the full suport of the club, its members and supporters. Go Dees and go Demon Tom :thumbsu:

Dean Bailey's contract is up at the end of the season - should the club sign him NOW or wait and see what happens? If it's good for the club to wait on signing Dean then it's hypocritical to demand that Tom signs now.

The AFLPA are pushing for a big increase in the salary cap - $50M per year from $170M to $220M - that's $3M per club extra. Tom is wise to wait and get his hands on a slice of that extra money - if he signs now it has to be within the existing cap.
