Selwood: Out (in more than one way)

Re: Selwood gets off!

Those calling Selwood a protected species should remember that last year he got FOUR weeks for an incident with Guerra

Well he hasn't learnt his lesson has he? All the more reason to be given some time off.

Re: Selwood gets off!

May well have finished Raines' career.
Only just got back in the team by reinventing himself as a tagger.
The role will be taken by someone else.
Raines' future dependes on their success or failure.

Re: Selwood gets off!

Can't believe Walker just gets a reprimand. If you went near the head like that with a hip and shoulder it'd get weeks, but he can slide in with the knees and it's all okay?

He will miss one week. Give it a rest.

Re: Selwood gets off!

WTF does this mean?

I thought you were all crying about the head high contact? At least be consistent with your sooking. Are you implying he dives?

The force was too minimal to warrant a report ala Ivan Maric a couple of weeks ago.. I didn't see you all jumping up and down when he got off....

Mate he smacked someone in the head so he got smacked back and went down like a sack of spuds and gets cleared, Raines should have got off as well , its pathetic.

Re: Selwood gets off!

A sensible decision and a good day for football.:thumbsu:

Yes, you come under more stupid than biased.

Not shaping up to be such a respectable captain is young glass jaw Selwood.

Seems its ok in the AFL now to instigate on field violence as long as your opponent retaliates and knocks your block off. Disgraceful message sent by the MRP.

Re: Selwood gets off!

Have to love people who are blaming Selwood for the mistakes of others. It's not like Selwood blows the whistle everytime he gets a free kick, nor is he part of the Match Review Panel.

Go off at the people who came to the decision you didn't like. Don't focus all your hatred at the player who had nothing to do with the decision making.

Re: Selwood gets off!

precedent has been set.

seems like the whole any purposeful head high contact will be suspendable macho bullshit line is thrown out the window, depends how hard it is now. alrighty mrp, cant wait for that all to change again in 2-3 weeks.

Re: Selwood gets off!

A bloke wacks a guy and is cleared, a bloke acts in what could be argued as self defense and is given a 3 week holiday based on the bloke he hit going down like a sack of s**t. The MRP are out doing themselves this year!

Other incidents Assessed:
Contact between Carlton’s Jarrad Waite and Fremantle’s Adam McPhee from the second quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Western Bulldogs’ Liam Picken and the GWS Giants’ Israel Folau from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Folau has received the ball and seeking to kick when he is tackled by player Picken around the waist. Folau disposes of the ball and does not brace for contact with the ground as part of the tackle. It was the view of the panel that Picken’s tackle was not unreasonable in the circumstances and the tackle did not have a slinging motion or a double action to drive his opponent into the ground. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Gold Coast Suns’ Karmichael Hunt and North Melbourne’s Andrew Swallow from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is bounced in the middle of the ground and player Swallow is bending to collect the ball as he is tackled by the Suns’ Josh Caddy. Player Hunt is coming to the contest from the side and tries to avoid making contact with the pair of players as they go to the ground. It was the view of the panel that the contact was caused by circumstances outside the control of player Hunt. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Andrew Raines and the Geelong Cats’ Joel Selwood from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. the ball is kicked from the Brisbane defence and is loose. Selwood bends over to pick up the ball while Raines is also coming in to contest possession. Raines has his arm out in front of him in a bid to win the ball, but makes high contact. It was the view of the panel that Raines was attempting to win possession and did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ Joel Selwood and the Brisbane Lions’ Andrew Raines from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The two players are ahead of the ball and running upfield. Selwood makes high contact to Raines with his left hand. After receiving a medical report from the Brisbane Lions Football Club, it was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a report. No further action was taken.

Contact between West Coast’s Beau Waters and Richmond’s Daniel Jackson from the first quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Richmond’s Shane Tuck has the ball on the wing and player Jackson is forward of the ball, calling for possession. Waters steps into Jackson’s path and braces for contact to block him. It was the view of the panel there was no forceful high contact and that Waters’ action was not unreasonable in the circumstances. The panel said the force used was not excessive in the circumstances and Jackson could reasonably expect contact to be made, having regard to his involvement in play. No further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond’s Shane Tuck and West Coast’s Ashton Hams from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. After a marking contest, the ball comes to ground. Hams is moving towards the ball while Tuck is coming from the opposite direction. Tuck turns side-on to contest the ball and has his eyes on the ball. High contact is made to player Hams and a free kick is paid. It was the view of the panel that Tuck was attempting to win possession and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Re: Selwood gets off!

I love Sel to death, but that was just such a shitty decision.

And protected species my ass. One game he escapes suspension, and all of a sudden he's protected? Gtfo. Please.

Re: Selwood gets off!

so raines gets weeks because selwood goes to ground. good on Raines for not going to ground like selwood did to milk a free kick. Selwood going to ground as the norm along with throwing the arms out and the new ducking (dropping the knees)

Both should have got the same, either 3 or nothing. Would have been funny to see selwood get 3 plus his loading.

Ill be interested to see what gerard weatley has to say about this tonight on afl360, his geelong bias will ring true i bet, as always

I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to be angry at a player who constantly snipes behind the play.

You're a moderator, where's your objectivity?

Re: Selwood gets off!

Terrible inconsistent decision.

However people shouldnt be hating on Jelwood here, not his fault the MRP loves him and have him in their DTs, I bet he's just as surprised as us that he got off!

Re: Selwood gets off!

Selwood was the instigator and he gets off its a pathetic outcome. This is another double standard from the muppet review panel...

they should both have been given 2 weeks anything else is bullsh!t

Re: Selwood gets off!

A precedent has now been set that you can punch anyone in the face, as long as you don't punch Joel Selwood.

I would expect the Lions and Raines to contest this charge, what an absolute joke. If anything Selwood should of received 2 weeks.

At least the MRP had some sense on this issue:

In a first quarter incident between Raines and Selwood, the panel found that Raines was trying to win possession of the ball when he came in to contact with Selwood's head, and had no case to answer.
