Should the Coleman medal be more than just about the most goals kicked by a forward?

Who did you enjoy watching more this year, Curnow or Tex?

The Coleman medal is pretty much as simple as “most goals kicked by a forward in the minor rounds”. With the goals tally being very close this year with Tex (76 goals) and Curnow (78 goals), it’s got me thinking whether there should be some additional criteria or perhaps a fan vote to determine the overall winner? Particular what if..both end up with the exact same amount of goals and behinds?

With respect to Tex and Curnow this year, Tex has the better overall goal average, having played one less game, as well as better kicking accuracy. Curnow having the better goal tally and more scoring shots, but is likely to be the main forward target in the Blues side. While the Crows forward arrays this year have been more evenly spread out and Tex being less of a focus.

With respect to the general forwards discussion, there is much more to a forward’s craft than just his number of goals. The defensive pressure, the hit outs, the miracle snaps, the pack marks etc. Personally, I would prefer to see a forward who kicks 50 goals and 20 pack marks than a forward who kicks 60 goals and all of them from 30-40m out, from boring chest marks.

Curnow receives a lot of 50/50 free kicks.
In the current game, technically you could argue they are there but for the most part, play on.
From the 38 free kicks he received, you could pencil in 30 of them as goals.

On the flip side, Tex only received 18 free kicks and still managed 75 goals.
This analysis was already done, Curnow got something like 18 goals from frees.

Should take away all the goals kicked against the Eagles this season. That puts Larkey top of the Coleman.. after both Curnow and Walker kicked 19 goals each against the Eagles across 2 of the home and away games.
Did Larkey not have that same opportunity to kick goals against West Coast twice this year ?
I'd be questioning the AFL if those 2 sides weren't drawn to play each other twice each year at the moment

So the best forward in a side should be avoiding kicking goals, because that’s what helps get their team into finals? Kicking goals is for selfish personal glory, except when Curnow does it? That’s some epically sound Blues supporter logic

Ummm things like block for team mates, passing off to team mates in a better position, not blindly blaze off to try to kick goals they are unlikely to get......

Basically NOT be a FIGJAM ......

If Curnow gets double the free kicks, the opposition is twice as worried about him.

Heading drew me in.

Saw the poll and the club the OP supports.

Didn't even read anything, will obviously be some whinge.

Ridiculous thread. Reeks of being started by a 12 year old who's a bit upset that his player didn't win. Maybe the grand final could be decided by a supporter vote if the losing team kicks more behinds than the winning team?

But maybe we could bring in a tiebreaker in case of a tie. Anyone that his been suspended by their club for being a racist doesn't win.

Obviously, they should deduct goals scored:
-like a burglar out the back.
-from free kicks.
-from non-contested events.

Additionally:
-goals total should be adjusted to reflect ladder position of oppo at the time of playing them.
-away goals should have a 1.15 loading.
