Showdown XI

Well we have started discussing this game on other threads, so I thought it worthy of it own.

Caught a little of the Ch10 News tonight & they reckon Doughty is in doubt (left training early) & Clarke may be dropped. Doughty would be a big loss particularly as the midfield is already lacking Bunji (although we were able to cover Roo for 2.5 games). Goodwin is the guy we need to get a lift from (he is still yet to poll a BOG vote).

Clarke I think needs more game time as he is getting out of touch due to lack of minutes - ie. a whole quarter here & there, rather than playing bits of quarters. I would hate to see Marsh to come in for Clarke, as what has he done to deserve a recall.

As I have mentioned before we really need to curb the influence of 2 Port players IMO. Firstly Francou who has a great record in showdown should get Stinger our best run-with player (who should be fresh after Ayres rested him last week  ). Nick Stevens also needs to be watched, so I would like either Nelson or Shirley to play him close attention. Hopefully Primus won't be 100% & we get some midfield dominance Saturday night.

Also mentioned on another thread that I believe Hewitt should take Perrie spot in the backline to pick up the resting ruckman. Not because Perrie is doing a bad job, but because then we could have 3 tall forwards (ie. Perrie, Stevens & Fitzy) to give us some marking power. Perrie is a smart footballer & combined well with Stevens last year when we were playing our best footy.

Can't wait until Saturday night!

I've been reluctant!

Stevo for Club Champion in 2002!

I have been avoiding this site this week for a couple of reasons, but mainly cause I know that there is port supporters lurking round every corner!

However, I think it is time I come out and give my thoughts on the Showdown.

I heard Mick Doughty left training early tonight, but I wouldn't be too worried about that. I think he will be right! As for dropping Clarke, no way! I think Rhett is doing a great job and Clarke is doing ok, better certainlly than Marsh at this stage.

I have a sneaking suspision. I think we will win this showdown. Everything has been going against us this week and I just think if the boys are half as mad as I am about the McLeod feasco, they will be mighty pumped up and rearing to go. I also think young Matty Bode will be just itching to get out against his old side for the first time!

Go You Crows!!!!

xx

Port are favourites to win the showdown.

It is a two horse race so Crows have a chance.

However things are not going right for Crows. Biglands did not finish training. Bickley has the flu. Clarke is out of form. Bienke is out. McLeod is out. Roo had a shocker last week. No real SANFL standouts to step up - Gags, Massie, Nelson, Marsh all just serviceable at best in SANFL.

Primus is 50/50 but if unavailable then Thurstans is ready to go.

Conclusion has to be: Port are favourites to win the showdown.

Ducks & drakes

Ducks & drakes are a happening.

Surely this is two clubs trying to underpin each other for underdog status.

Is ther a shed "thingy" available that anyone can attend after the game?

I expect the fireworks will be a happening before the game or at half time

You mean French dont you?

Latest news is Doughty is out with the groin strain & Primus is likely to play (but you would question whether he would be near 100%). So we need to make 3 changes this week. Gags should come in for Doughty. Nelson who was unlucky to get dropped will probably come in for Bunji. But who is likely to be the 3rd inclusion for Beinke. Ch10 reckons Marsh or Massie.

Blues_Girl - I don't mind Massie coming in, but Marsh would be a huge mistake. We should have traded him at the end of last season whilst we still had a chance.

I agree about Marsh, I think he's past his best. I saw Massie play a couple weeks ago and he did absolutely nothing to impress me, infact he could barely hold a mark let alone anything else.

I know Primus is in doubt, but I can't see the Power playing Nick Stevens in the ruck. ;) Quickly glossing over the Power's side, I gather the only change is French in for the injured Dew (although there may be another change if Primus doesn't pull up).

I don't think we've done too badly...Nelson is an obvious inclusion, together with Stenglein they could be minding a couple of Port players, in which case Massie can play on a back flank...I think he can even play on a wing....

As for the Marsh-Clarke swap, I'm not too fussed by it either. Clarke needs game time and he'll get it with the Glenelg reserves...as little as we think of Marsh he is a better option around the ground than Matty...let's just hope Rhett stands up for the whole game.

How ironic that Clarke is dropped in the same week as Rehn has been for Hawthorn.

Blues_Girl - If you have seen some Norwood games, are either Gallagher & Hewitt in decent form, or are they struggling like Massie?

Hewitt didn't play in the game that I saw and Gallagher was very undisciplined that day but played better than Massie did.

Do I? Perhpas so. I thought it was Thurstans called in the news report, but it may well have been French. It may even be Primus himself, but not perhaps at 100%.

Any of them better than Marsh I would have thought. At least Biglands can play.

Matchups?

So what are the matchups you would like? For me:

1. Stenglein on Francou (who always plays well against us).
2. Nelson on Nick Stevens (whose influence must be curbed)
3. Smart on Tredrea (Smarty needs to be challenged)
4. Bassett on Cornes
5. Hart on Wanganeen
6. Johncock on the Cocky
7. Marsh on the bench ;)

Will Port play Carr on Johnson or Riccuito? I expect the former, as Sugar has been easily our best player this year. We need our other midfielders - ie. Goody, Bicks, Bode, Edwards & Dogga to also share the load. The midfield & their delivery into the forward line was a major disappointment last week & we needs to get back to like against Sydney.

Johncock on Cocky should be a big one. Those match ups look ok, I like our chances with them, I think Carr will take Roo actually, Nelson on N.Stevens? I hope not, Nelson will not stop Stevens IMO, you reckon Smart can stop Tredrea?Personally I would play Mark Stevens on Tredrea.

My tip for the week:

Biglands will do most of the ruckwork, as he seems to have done lately, however when Marsh is on the field, he will play some very good footy, and be a contributor to the side. He will take some marks, and gain at least 8 possessions around the ground.

ie I am predicting Marsh to play well.

Just remember where you saw this after the game ;)

Other tips:
Welsh to kick 5.
Stevens to take 10 marks.
Goodwin to play very well.
Francou to resort to thumping Stenglein.

While I am at it, sorry for not putting votes in for rd 4. I was up in Scotland, and didn't see/hear the game. Sorry.

Dropping Clarke for Marsh is a bloody disgarce

We all know what happened last time they left Clarke out - we got humiliated by Carlton in a final

Marsh will drop chest marks and generally will be useless. He is not up to it at this level.

Pretty clever dropping Clarke when South have the bye so he has to play SANFL reserves. What a crock of s hit.

I was throwing things at the TV when I saw the changes on the footy show.

This is the worst selection decision since Cornes dropped Scott Lee for one game for some unexplainalbe reason.
