Injury SJOGHCIU - Offseason Edition

After an encouraging start to 2023 with no significant injuries through preseason, it’s time to dust off the injury thread as normal service has returned with an ankle injury to Jack Darling

Caught in a tackle by Jeremy McGovern in the late stages of a match sim, Darling’s ankle was trapped underneath him

Yep and there it is.

Was waiting for the usual bad injury to one of our players before the season starts. It's happening again.

Going by the last few season we still need another 4 or 5 to go down and everything is back to normal where we play the first half of season with half a list.

He’s on the cusp of 300 games but missing a year could dent that plan

Just for future reference and to get an idea of how we're going currently I've compiled a bit of an injury list/update on the overall health of the list:

Currently injured and doing very little (3):
  • Jack Darling - injured his ankle during match sim on Feb 10 after otherwise a full preseason. Scans in the coming days will reveal the severity of the injury.
  • Rhett Bazzo - on personal leave after the passing of his mother, but it has been mentioned that he's also currently injured. Was also in rehab pre-Christmas and in January before taking leave.
  • Jordyn Baker - Has hardly done any training since the start of February after otherwise completing a full preseason. No information on what the issue is.

Training, but only in the rehab group (2):
  • Luke Edwards - reported on Feb 6 that he suffered a quad injury, reportedly on the minor end of the scale and was only expected to limit him for a few weeks.
  • Jack Petruccelle - injured his ankle during match sim on Feb 3, was also only expected to limit him for a few weeks.

Integrating back into the main group, but sitting out match sim (2):
  • Harry Barnett - was drafted with an ankle injury and after a couple of minor setbacks this preseason which have kept him in the rehab group, he has joined the main group for some drills in the last few sessions.
  • Tyrell Dewar - was drafted with a foot injury and has slowly been increasing his training loads this preseason, also training with the main groups for a few stints.

Integrating back into match sim (3):
  • Jake Waterman - Had off-season knee surgery and has been slowly increasing his training loads this preseason. Played a quarter of match sim on Feb 10 after sitting out the week prior.
  • Liam Duggan - Has been managing his dodgy knees this preseason. Was mostly in full training pre-Christmas but in January began to be pulled back. Now slowly ramping up his training. Also played one quarter of match sim on Feb 10 after sitting out the week prior.
  • Campbell Chesser - Very slowly increasing his training loads after missing the entire 2022 season with an ankle injury. Played one quarter of match sim on Feb 10 - his first taste of a competitive hitout in almost 12 months.

Mostly in full training but being managed out of some drills/match sim (3):
  • Luke Shuey - 32 years old and has been injury prone the last few seasons, so being managed carefully. Sits out some drills occasionally but played the full match sim on Feb 10.
  • Shannon Hurn - 35 years old, is slowly ramping up his training loads in preparation for round 1 but is still being held out of some drills and match sim.
  • Nic Naitanui - 32 years old and had off-season knee surgery but is pretty much in full training now, only being held out of a couple of drills. Played the full match sim on Feb 10.

Previously injured/limited this preseason but now in full training (7):
  • Dom Sheed - Was held out of a few drills earlier this preseason to prevent his stress injury from flaring up again, but he's been in full training this year.
  • Elliot Yeo - Had a minor calf injury in the off-season but after a cautious approach pre-Christmas he is flying now.
  • Oscar Allen - Has sat out of some drills this preseason to prevent overworking his body, but hasn't had any injury hiccups so far. Pretty much in full flight now.
  • Xavier O'Neill - Was in the rehab group pre-Christmas and in early Jan with an unknown issue but in full training now.
  • Tom Cole - Had a full preseason until re-injuring his ankle on Jan 15 - the same one that kept him out for the 2022 season. After a few weeks of training away from the main group, he is fully fit again.
  • Luke Foley - Was in the rehab group pre-Christmas and appeared to be in full training until being pulled back a little in late Jan/early Feb. Participated fully in match sim on Feb 10
  • Tom Barrass - Was in the rehab group pre-Christmas with an unknown issue and sustained a hand injury in the Christmas/New Year's break. Wore a cast and was limited at training for a few weeks, but by Feb he was back into full training.

So right now, we probably can't rule out anyone for round 1, though Darling, Bazzo and Baker would appear unlikely. It's quite hard to tell though because there isn't a huge amount of information currently on those three guys.

Obviously Bazzo will be given as much time as he needs but after a few weeks off training he'll take a while to get going again, especially since he's also apparently injured.

The severity of Darling's ankle injury will probably be revealed in the next few days, but it seems very doubtful he'll be available for round 1.

Nothing has been reported on re Baker but it's not a huge loss even if he misses round 1.

Now we just have to hope Darling's injury isn't the start of a string of severe injuries like we experienced this time last year.
