Now that the American people have given clearance for Bush to take a hardline against anyone who displeases him. I am wondering how many of the self satisfied right wingers are going to show thier true support for his crusade and sign up for the American Army. According to Bush there is plently of work to be done. Why they are even giving away US citizenship for any foreigners that do.

If I can hack Military Service I am sure it would be a cakewalk for the tough talking guys and gal on this board.

So lads and gal can you walk the talk?

A Clash fan! The Sandanista album I believe.

good man.

Edit:hmm, come to think of it the line was "it's up to you not to heed the call up"

I think Blue Mark is a little old hat in his thinking.

The enlisting part is right, but it's time to privatise the whole thing and form private Christian militias to sort out Arabs, Jews, Aetheists, people who don't go to church, abortionists, women who've had abortions, Asians, Mike Moore, people who don't go to church often enough, blacks, liberals, people who've seen a Mike Moore film, people who go to the wrong church, trade unionists, conservationists and other people who don't think like you do or look like you.

Starting mine today with a little seed capital from an un-named listed company and a container full of guns from China.

Welcome aboard!

Am I the only one who's sick of this 'Well, you supported the war so why don't you just go sign up NOW!' line of arguement.

If a person supports a particular activity orchestrated by a group of people, that doens't mean that person is obligated to join them.

I'm for more teachers, so I guess I should sign up and become one.

I can't believe I'm typing this...

I'd say the 'why don't you join up' argument is about as valid as the 'well, you support "certain left wing" action/movement. Maybe you should go and help build that village in Laos' argument.

It's as valid as you want it to be.

You must spread some Rep around before giving it to Dry Rot again:D.

Agreed. There is one subtle distinction though. It is a case of supporting a particular activity and then oblidging SOMEONE ELSE to support that activity on your behalf.

Rather like you deciding that you support teachers and then insisting that I become a teacher.

It is certainly true that a disproportiante number of working class kiddies get sent to fight wars which are disproportiately advocated by middle class parents. There is a movement in the US on the left to SUPPORT the idea of a draft as a means of ensuring that middle-class parents share the burden of war casualties.

It is pretty easy for parents in Rose Bay or Toorak to send kids from Parramatta and Dandenong to do their fighting for them. Might be a bit different if their were more Scotch College kids on the front line.

Good post Weaver!

I find it frustrating that voting for a political party implies that your moral / ethical / spiritual stance is somehow flagged when voting.

There'd be a stack of "left wing" voters who'd back wars without question and do literally nothing for the greater "social good" (eg. charity work).

Alternatively there'd be a stack of "right wing" voters who hate the war and do heaps for social equality.

I'm not trying to romanticise or critisise either alternative, just stating that the right wing shouldn't automatically be perceived as a collection of cold heartless individuals.

I do like the sound of re-introducing drafting! Regardless of political persuation, the true social impact would be felt accross all demographics and as such, a more considered approach would be adopted.

I see your point, but I don't think most pro-war supporters insist on other people joining the army other than themselves, but rather, that the people already in the army should be sent to fight.

As for the class thing, I think as time continues, the distribution of army personnel between 'classes' will gradually fade. That's assuming it's made mostly out of lower-income owners anyway (does anyone have any figures?) It's more of a culture thing than how much money is in one's back-pocket, but indeed, the two can be inter-linked.

As for the draft, no one should be forced to enrol if they don't want to, for obvious liberal reasons. Especially in times like these when world conflicts are declining anyway.

It's as valid as you want it to be.

Which is ironic because those villages being built in Laos are more likely to be being built by evangelical christian missionaries and the like, who are routinely tagged to the right.

Yes, soon as I finish uni and get my educ. degree I'm joining the army. If Bush thinks there's plenty of work to be done, I'll be there for him.
