Chris Dawes has has his name bandied around extensively in the Fevloa trade threads as you'll all know.

I strolled over to the buddy board to get some info about the big man and couldn't find all that much.

If this player is going to be used as part of a trade to Fev I'm interested to know, how good is he and what is his potential?

So for those of you that are in the know and follow the VFL more than I do, can you please take some time to give us some info on him? I'd hate to see him tearing us a new one in 2015.

****Please do not turn this into a Fev thead. I'm asking about Dawes' ability not his value as trade bait****

He has been okay in patches at VFL level and AFL level.

I honestly don't rate him. I don't think his style of play suits his body size. Yet there are many on the boards who rate him highly.

I can't really see him having a major influence at Collingwood, but I'm often wrong.

My closest comparison of Dawes is to Tom Hawkins.

At a similar age, Hawkins looked about the same as Dawes, struggling to hold his marks, looking very ordinary at ground level, but showing an ability to use his body in contested situations.

Dawes had what most would say was a disappointing year, only managing 4 games after kicking 3 goals in the first final against Adelaide last year.

He has the physicality to play AFL, but at the moment lacks the determination it seems to take that next level.

The next 2 years will be crucial for Dawes, if he is traded to Carlton, he would play seniors for them straight away, as if he stays at the pies and we get Fev, he may struggle to get a game.

He is a "good" prospect, don't think he will ever be a star though.

He's shown glimpses.

But that's it.

He'd be better served at another side personally. He'd become a better player at another club. Yeah' it may come back to bite us in the ass, but I'd rather see him do well somewhere else and we get a good player for him. Win/win for both.

That nails it. He's essentially a Diet Cloke at this stage.

he's a bit of a spunk. ;]

but yeah, he's a young fey forward, has played some good and bad games at the afl level, his debut game was impressive as was the final against adelaide in 2008. lacks consistency at his young age. he seems like to play a stay at home forward role (imo) and stick to the forward fifty rather than lead up, like cloke.

his kicking is sometimes wayward. he can take a good contested grab and is physically fit and strong. can pinch hit in the ruck at times though isn't overly quick. i think there's alot of potential in dawes. he is also just getting over a pretty big surgery.

Yeah, not nearly physical and aggressive enough at the ball and his opponent. Kicks okay but not a great contested mark it appears (cue ST) 'above his head'.

I don't mind the Hawkins comparison though, Hawkins looked pretty woeful early but there was some spark of promise.

Also love interest of Dave The Man.

I would be disappointed if Dawes got traded, I'd rather see Reid go.

same. i'd like to see dawes stay.

though, in this type of situation, you can't want to keep everything and lose nothing, and i'd be even more shattered to see nathan brown leave. i think dawes is a sacrifice we'd need to make if carlton accepted him.

Big, strong, power forward who has some good mongral in him, hits the contest hard and will not shirk an issue.

Decent kick, reasonably agile for a big solid lad, very good lead up forward who will burst open a pack and create a contest. Not useless at ground level but not exceptional for his size either.

Major weakness is that he is very poor at identifying and protecting the 'ball-drop' area and this sees him often take up poor positions in the marking contest, gets out manouvered and give up easy contested marks/spoils and rebounds. Also, likes to chest mark on the lead which makes him vulnerable to a spoil.

Reid and Brown are very important to our future. Our future back line looks thin without them. Reid will go close to winning the 2's B&F in a position he has only recently started developing in. He'll play 15+ games next year.

Dawes is well back. Let's look at it. Collingwood were keen to have another tall in their forward 50 as illustrated by Rocca's selection in the qualifier, yet Dawes had limited opportunities this year, and I dare say that if Rusling was available to play in the forward 50 he would've been selected over Dawes.

We only used him where Fraser was sidelined basically.

Dawes has currency, probably a lot more than he should. His stocks are probably higher than justified because he is what 21-22 and a huge lump of man. Probably a good time to explore the options on a player who just doesn't seem to have it.

I genuinely hope that if he isn't wearing black & white, he still finds success.

I would be disappointed if Dawes got traded, I'd rather see Reid go.

I'm the exact opposite, Dawes showed very little this year, even at VFL level, while Ben Reid was our best VFL finals player, showing more in his last 5-6 weeks then Dawes has ever shown.

If Ben Reid is traded for a 29 year old alchy, I'll be pissed off.

Chris Dawes at tac level and before he injured his knee was the most feared player. He would crash packs and had a good pair of hands and would suit our forwrd line perfectly, but has not been given a go week in week out.

He was picked at pick 23 in 06 superdraft,Hines swooped because ,he would have in the top 10 if he wasn't injured.

He has shown his worth once he recovered from his knee, with very limited AFL game time.He showed glimpses last year, when he was starring in the reserves, and played well in our finals games last year.

I believe beacuse he was overlooked for senior games this year,he has had a mediocre year in the reserves, but can work very well in tanderm with cloke and Anthony. This is our future not fevola.
It would be ahuge mistake to move this kid on because he shows great potential, but he needs game time week in week out.i would forgoe fevola and stick with dawes as our future.Fev only has two years and by trading dawes who is only 21 doesn't make sense to me,if he was traded,it would smack of malthouse desperation with no gauranntees, plus it would come back to bite us.fORGET FEV .........KEEP DAWES.

Ive seen abit of him and rate him. Hes a big body and looks quite useful. I would prefer to see him stay at the club and develop, but i can also understand why some are saying to let him go and play elsewhere to get more opportunity.

DC watch dawes at VFL level, i dont care what he looked like against kids alf size, but against players with similar body size he just doesnt take contested marks especially above his head

I see potential in him, but whether he will be able to grow while playing for Collingwood, who knows. I reckon another team who allow him to play every game would suit him better.

Let's get one thing straight. Under no circumstances am I changing my user name from MyManDawes to MyManFev! If MyManDawes has to move clubs to retain his username, then so be it!

I've seen a lot of him , and when he's mentally on he is very hard to stop , it's when his confidence isn't there that he struggles more than any other queries.
Agile at ground level and unselfish , maybe too much so. As good as Reid was at VFL level this year , Dawes' best was better.

Probably because he was so much bigger than everyone else during U18s.

I don't follow the VFL much but if the comparisons to Hawkins are a good fit then I would not be against trading him as I don't really rate Hawkins all that highly. I'd be happy for him to prove me wrong but I don't see it happening.
Wasn't Dawes outperformed by Bryan this year in the VFL.

What about the Rus.. If we re-sign him then would you say he is in front of Dawes?

On this, i hope Rusling plays FF next year..

Agreed bucks, the kid has no confidance this year, especially breaking his balls game after game at VFL level and being overlooked by the likes of malthouse's favorites.
If we trade him it'll come back to bite us.Book mark this thread

If we keep him which i hope we do,he will become an strong focal point in attack complimenting, clokey and Anthony with special guest appreances from the Rus.Very versatile forward structure,in time very hard to match up on,by then Buckley will be steering the crew.
