Now i was disappointed that St Kilda couldnt' find a role for banger at moorabin, but it seems to be about as much for Harvey to be somewhere new after spending 2/3 of his life at Moorabbin as St Kilda not finding a slot for him.

Also many st kilda fans were skeptical about SOS's motivation for coming to St Kilda, many blues fans joking thought he was coming to learn how NOT to manage a football club before returning in triumph to Princes Park. SOS was part of one of the most famous defensive units in the mid 90s as well as renowned for his work on and off the ball, psyching his forward, directing them into poor positions to shoot for goal etc.

Also despite loathing Carlton, I've always admired Brett Rattan as a worth opponent, a fair player and if analogies are allowed, carltons equivalent of hard work grunt and courage as our own Nathan Burke.

Carlton's midfield has been laden with talent these past few years but they don't seem to get the wins on the board and often shaded by midfields who you could argue have less talent available than the blues.

Has this been a win win for both clubs? St Kilda's defence and defencive structures seem peerless at THIS time (premierships aren't won in april) after a solid defence in 08 ad 07.

would love to see banger back at the saints, its a bit of a knot in the guts to old fella's like me seeing banger in the navy blue, and Im pretty sure a few blues fans turn their eyes away when they see SOS in the RW&B?

fair trade at this stage?

I have to say that I was a bit unsure about what to expect when SOS joined our coaching panel, mainly because I thought he was utterly useless in giving special comments when commentating. However, he has superpassed expectations to the point where I think he will be seriously considered for the next senior coaching gig when it becomes available ( if he so chooses to apply).

So in relation to Banger vs SOS, we have by far got the better end of the deal at this stage.

Never really understood the angst when Harvs went to Carlton. Couldn't see what he had to offer St Kilda that he hadn't given already. Was best for both parties to get new ideas and fresh blood. Would he be learning or teaching more in his new role? Not sure TBH.

SOS left Carlton in different circumstances and has gone on to forge a career in coaching that probably makes him one of the game's most valuable assistant coaches. His work at three clubs now proves what he can do. Not sure if he'd achieved the same level of respect had he coached at Carlton but their defence could certainly have done with his input in recent years.

It is interesting how they both seemed to have turned out as Assistant coaches (and probably a bit early to call on Harvey).

I must admit, that as much as I loved SOS as a player I just never thought he had the goods to make it as a coach (or commentator). To be honest, I always thought he was a bit of a nuff-nuff and a bit the same with Harvey.

Just goes to show that you don't need to be a huge personality like a Dermie to get your point across. I think Greg Williams proves this as well.

I was a bit poopy to see Banger in Blue, but I also understand that after 20 odd years at the same place a new start was probably just what he needed.
Also, if he was in a coaching area at st kilda he may have been coaching a lot of his former team mates which may not have worked out so well.

I like the idea of players being assistants or coaches atdifferent clubs to what they have played at. They will get to expierence a different way of doing things and get new ideas.

I agree, and although it is weird seeing Harves in a Blues training shirt, I think ultimately it serves him better so see how another club(s) achieves things, both on and off the paddock

It is always better for potential coaches when they retire and start out as assistants, to try and 'learn their craft' at a different club with a different culture and values to the one they played at IE Woosha at Carlton for a couple of years before returing back to WA to coach the Eagles.

Personally I think Buckley should actually coach another side (even as an assitant) before joining Collingwood as the senior coach.
We all know deep down Harvey will always be a Saints man through and through, ditto SOS with Carlton..

true that to some degree but letting go also progresses you.

Danny frawley was held back because he was still a saint IMO.

Lethal was fully collingwood for a decade and the same at the bears for a decade also.

Sheedy is part of Essendon more so than Richmond.

Many consider Lethal amongst the greatest Hawks ever, and yet he is a legendary coach of two other clubs.

who knows what SOS or banger may achieve yet.

Pretty fair trade in my opinion, both SOS and Harvs are legends at their respective clubs and have a wealth of football knowledge. I must admit it was hard to see Harves leave St Kilda but I can understand he probably needed to have a break and a fresh start somewhere else. Hopefully he will return to us some day though.

In any event, it's probably win-win for both clubs. The Saints players would have already learnt a lot from Harves when he was still playing for us and now some of the young Blues midfielders will get the benefit of some of that knowledge now too. Whilst we now have one of the best defenders of all time in Silvagni coaching our young backmen like Fisher, Gilbert and Dawson.

You only have to look at how well our defence has performed in recent times, to see the benefits of having someone like SOS onboard.
