Following on from the Meat and Potatoes thread a couple of days ago, another off season thread.

Hypothetically, round 22, 2010, coming up against a team consisting of a spine of:

Scarlett
Bock
Judd
Brown
Fevola

with Cox in the ruck.

What spine would you pick for Freo to match up on this team, assuming we need to win, not just limit the damage! I want each player to be a chance to beat his opponent in the position chosen.

Pavlich - would make a contest everytime and would chase out of defense.
Mayne - as a defensive sort in this role opposed to the VERY dangerous Bock.
Palmer - if we are going head to hear but Ibbo if we wanted to tag.
Tarrant - has shown he is good enough to stop Browny.
McPharlin - has kicked Fevs ass everytime they have played each other i reckon.
Sandilands - beat Cox with a better player.

I remember my older brother having a few signed spy vs spy tour posters. They were big in the eighties, right ?

lol, i think more the 90's.... still get a run in mad magazine :thumbsu::D.... i dont know that from personal experience though

The thing about those lineups is the opp spine is an AA line up and ours matches up to an at least break even situation. As we wont face any line up as strong as that I/ll go back to my original point ,our spine is second to none and gives us a strong positive to build on.With that in mind we will play finals 010

PS If we dont theres always 011 or 012 013 >>>...:o

i agree, it is one of the better spines... the problem is you give one of those guys an injury, and we dont have a ready replacement... or if mcpharlin gets played forward instead of back, then you can bet his form will drop off, or if pavlich plays midfield, then again we lose a lot of our attacking fire power, a lot has to do on variables and harvey\

i will say this... i am a big harvey supporter, but if he refuses to play mcpharlin at CHB/FB this year and continues to play pav predominantly in the midfield... i am going to be off his bandwagon pretty bloody quickly

I still think McPharlin is probably our 2nd best key forward. His last year's form, was pretty patchy at both ends, but I still think in theory he is good enough as a secondary target, assuming Pav is our main target.

Are there any chances of pav playing as CHB and Playin mayne as a key forward. (and of Course Pav would rebound up to the forward line)

cant see that happening at any time. putting pav in the backline would be more than counter productive, our forwardline this year was ordinary because pav didnt play there. we really NEED him there to be competitive/successful

I'd say that with the wallis article in the mcpharlin thread we won't be seeing him forward much. Johnson, Murphy and Bradley are all better targets :)

Based on their demonstrated abilities to kick bags of goals? (In the AFL)

kepler is the best goal scorer out of those three

Yep, but none of them are in McPharlin's class as a forward yet, even if he is a better defender than forward. We really need to pluck a full forward from somewhere. Maybe Des will be proved correct and the SPUD will finally step up. I just hope there is a serious plan B.

oh i agree, but i think bradley if given an extended run at full forward would be good. i dont know why he doesnt get a real go there. he dominated in the VFL at full forward, has shown great signs in the forwardline for us.... dont understand  des would also be a good player there... murphy... well, i'll believe it when i see it. your right though, we need someone to step into that position and do the job

I have to agree, especially given how poor we were forward last year. I also think he can compliment Pavlich quite well, and his mobility may make it more important for defenders to take him seriously (compared to say Murphy).

yep i can imagine the following occuring:

Brian lake- hmmm im on ryan murphy again today, gee cant believe im playing on this chump again, well not untill i retire and go back to playing in the VFA.... anywho.... looks like im in for another high possession game........ shit... i forgot to put myself in my dream team....

or

Brian lake- kepler bradley hey? well everyone makes fun of the guy, he looks like a young hunch back of notre dame.... how good can he be at full forward really, i mean... im brian lake!

3 qtr time

Brian lake- who the hell would have thought that this goofy prick bradley would be so damn quick... and man is he unpredictable, i mean that 4th goal he kicked, it didnt even look like he meant to kick it, bloody hell.... well atleast now i feel like im earning my pay, not like when i play on the usual duds murphy or those west coast losers hansen, lynch, kennedy, lecras, mckinley, brown or that callum wilson chump

With two talls as mobile as Pavlich and Bradley it can cause a bit of havoc. But I'd want them getting a bit of quality time together during the pre-season, which I doubt will happen. Add into that the other forwards who are all livewire in terms of mobility and there is a fair amount of danger about.

Maybe the problem Bradley faces is that if he were to become a serious FF he would need to get his head around where the team wants him to lead, and where the midfielders want him to be, rather than as an enigma FF which seems more his type. Otherwise our midfield is going to kick it to Pavlich every time.
