Swann is rubbish with the bat under pressure. I don't have any proof, but I'd day the vast majority of his runs are from slog-a-thon declarations and other meaningless parts of matches. Read his book not long ago, I got the impression that he's not the greatest of team players, seemed to have a pretty selfish attitude towards the game.

Pretty harsh, he is just a tail-ender afterall.

Not many tail-enders are that great at batting under pressure...hence why they bat where they do.

Oh dear me England, so much for that era of dominance you told us you were about to go on.

So England will lose the number 1 ranking if they do not win the next Test I think. Have they actually done anything away from home when they were number 1? India at least drew away series in South Africa, beat Windies and New Zealand from memory in their 18 month reign. I am wondering when the next dominant number one team will come to the front (Australia was the last one). South Africa can barely defeat teams at home and whilst they have a great team they simply do not get the results. Kirsten may change that.

Although rankings don't show it, South Africa are the #1 side in the world in my eyes. They really should have beaten us 2-0 in that test series and although it took them a while to win a series at home, people overlook how they havent lost many test series in quite a while now.

This loss seems a lot worse than the ones in the uae, world number 1 humbled by a very ordinary test team that had won just once in their last 17 tests.

Not really sure it matters who the official number 1 is right now though test cricket is so intriguing because there are so many decent but also flawed teams.

There are certainly no great test teams currently playing, lets go back to say 94-1995 i would rank the west indies australia south africa and pakistan from that era all ahead of any current test team.

England are 0-4 as number 1, with India's drubbing in england that's a combined 0-8 in the last 8 games by the number 1 test team.

Got to say there was some bloody poor cricket all round in this test match. For all the whining from the English commentators on Sky about how England's batsmen threw it away, I can't say much better for the Sri Lankan batsmen. There was just as many stupid shots from them.

Did make for a fun match though.

Sanga is really out of form - not quite at Strauss' level of finding record levels of edges on his bat but not much better.

I was one of the guys gloating about our upcoming period of dominance .

I still think we are a big chance to beat Australia in the next Ashes at home, but that was so dismal.

The Pakistan attack was wonderful in the last series, so as disappointed as I was, I could acknowledge that we had been beaten by a very good side. With respect to Sri Lanka, they are combative, but not great and Herath taking 12 wickets is hard to fathom.

What a thoroughly insipid performance from England.
