Very much like Essendon with Hird, club favourite sons seem to have an extended leave pass to stuff things up that other people aren’t afforded. Watching “On the Couch” last night they showed the players from other clubs they have traded in under SOS’s watch and it truly is horrible for any Carlton fan. Anyone else would have been sacked a while ago but SOS gets away with it. The final straw really should have been the decision to trade away their first pick to Adelaide this year, talk about incompetence.

Might have been an ok full back, but he's not a list manager!

Sure thing buddy - so whats your criteria of a good list manager during a rebuild?

I wouldn't have given Adelaide first bite of the cherry pie ;)

I also wouldn't have recruited the second/third/fourth string players from the club I was previously employed at!

This has aged well

Yikes. I wonder if there's an equivalent video of the Adelaide booth falling over themselves to take the deal.

The damning part for me is the way that they keep reassuring themselves, "We rate this kid at pick 6." That's an alarmingly dumb view of market dynamics (or else desperation). Because even if they're geniuses and correctly value Stocker at Pick 6 while no-one else does, while also correctly predicting that the Blues will rise up the ladder and make their 2019 first-rounder less valuable, that still doesn't justify overpaying the market rate.

It's like I have a diamond and I want to swap it for a tomato because I really like tomatoes and don't rate diamonds. I can make that trade and feel like I came out ahead, but the correct move is first to swap my diamond for what other people think it's worth ($$$), then pay what other people think the tomato is worth ($), giving me the tomato + $$ left over.

It’s clear his list management decisions are not based around performing this season. He’s trying to replicate previous premiership sides. Richmond aced the 2006-2009 drafts (08 a bit of a bust), particularly the first and second rounds, and are only just reaping the rewards now.

The plan was to have as much talent in the same age profile ready to compete in 6-8 seasons, and right now they’re all 18-22 and it’s not happening.

Talent identification is a seperate issue, not isolated to SOS. Keen to see how he supplements the kids as that’s where a lot of teams have broken down in the past. Hopefully not too late.
Re-writing history there. Sure you don't become a premiership threat over night, but wouldn't there be an obvious progression if Carlton's recruiting was following in Richmond's footsteps.

Hardwick's first four seasons
2010 - 6 wins
2011 - 8.5 wins
2012 - 10.5 wins
2013 - 15 wins

Maybe SOS knew how this years draft looked like and preferred senior body to another young mid which we have plenty of????

..and we got Stocker.
Even if you didn’t want to take pick 1 to the draft, what do you think you’d be able to extract from another club for the first pick in the draft? Stocker was rated by every other club where Carlton picked him, only Carlton rated him top 10.

Having seen Stocker really close playing out of his prime position as an inside pitbull. He never makes mistakes in the backhalf (playing out of position) and his aggression for a teenager is second to none. I look forward to our next coach playing him in position and develop him the right way.

Being fair re the infamous trade, if this year’s number one is a spud or no better a player than Stocker or whoever Carlton takes this year then Carlton can still win it. We do need to wait and see.

If pick one is a superstar and Stocker and this year’s pick are average then they will rightly be absolutely canned.

If he doesn’t trade the crows first round pick and chooses to draft a youngster with it then would you call it a mistake?

Almost every expert has a glowing endorsement of our list.. Which is why only having 1 win is unacceptable and Bolton had to go.. The list is fine, and every available coach will be lining up to take on the list. What SOS has done has been very good, sure there are some misses but overwhelmingly over the past 3 years we have got them right.

Missing an experienced free agent target like Dylan Shiel is probably SOS only real failure.
