Can some tell me why all our forwards congregate as a mass at CHF? I would have thought if you going to have a mass of players start them closer to goal so they lead up the ground when we get the centre clearance? The current situation when we do get a win a centre clearance it is kicked to about to the mass of players a CHF?

Haven't watched the game yet but are you sure it was initiated by us or GWS?

I'm not a fan of Sumich as a coach.

I think we are often out coached up forward. It has been our main weakness for a while, I know we have been missing a vital cog up forward, but I wish Freo would try a new forward coach.

We generally do this. All teams generally do it really, to a different extent. You have a couple of guys that will wander into the square on the bounce.

It'd be interesting to try a wider spread but I think it's a pretty normal set up. A bomb out of the centre circle is pretty much always going to be directed to the top of the 50 arc, not wider. And if you get a clean clearance you've got a wider expanse for your deeper KPF(s) to lead into.

The opposition parks 1-2 spares there

They pressure our clearance so we kick it there

We can have a 3 v 1 or 3v2

Or we can have a 6/7v5 to allow support to arrive

It's not that hard to work out - refer Richmond game at Subi, that was the last time our Fwds played deep

It's meant to negate the spare by allowing our forwards to get to the drop of the ball and stream forward if we win it. But it's hardly rocket science stuff. We bunch up our forwards to negate the spare. I'm not sure it's as good as the coaches think, because our forwards are incapable of creating separation between themselves and the forward. It works for teams whose forwards are capable of leading to the pockets but it does give them low percentage shots.

Richmond play an alternative where they put all their forwards deep and hope their midfield and wingers can create overlap run and shoot from the 50 without the forwards becoming involved.

They seem to have abandoned this tactic for 2015. It was quite apparent last year and I thought looked quite good. But I think opposing midfields would handball to the defensive side knowing no pressure was coming from behind. Negating the tactic. And allowing the Richmond opposition really clean clearances.

Is there a word missing in the thread title?

Who else went and reread the title and then went "OHHH that's funny"

I did.

What made it even better was as it was a post from Lach - so I didn't expect it to be funny.

Just a "huddle". One of many forward set ups.

Benefits are there is plenty of space for quick kicks to drop in. Ideal for Walters, Crozier, Hill or any of our speedsters. When breaking to the space you can also use the other players, opposition or teammates, as a way of losing your direct opponent.

Kicking to the mass isn't ideal but can still work since the footy will more than likely be brought to ground or spill over the back.

We have a bad habit of Tabs no idea of how to lead he always gets in the way of Pav !!!! bringing his defender there also :(.
