What a spin-out.
  • We start the preseason as the most rubbish side going around.
  • Then, we get into the real stuff and look absolutely unbeatable.
  • The coach gets publicly cocky and starts talking about resting blokes for the finals (I noticeably cringe at this)
  • Having said that, the wheels, drive shaft and sections of the exhaust fall off. The season is in tatters.
  • Somehow, we begin to rebuild and get some momentum going. Some young talent are lifting us over the line. We smash the Dons.
  • Then, once more, the dopey coach opens his mouth with - How dangerous we're gonna' be if (read: when) we make the finals....(again, I cringe)
  • POP. The bubble bursts. Season is over.
  • Coach needs to shut-the-F'k-up.
  • The players need some serious leadership - they are 20 something year old men - they need strong leadership to guide them. This is what good coaching staff provide. Leadership.
Apparently, the world ends this year, so ladies and gentlemen that's it - no more flags for us. Ever.

Drove up from Byron for the game. Was a complete disaster obviously. Presumably the players carried the same mentality into the game as I and, i would assume, most supporters. I was expecting a win until the last few mins and pre-game it was a matter of percentage. Shows just how devastating it can be to not be switched on. Was so ridiculous I almost questioned whether I was dreaming. I feel for Ratts - think the expectations of the current 22 were too high after gutsy wins against tigers, dogs and bombers. Still a very young 22 that we fielded.

There are positives:

- yes casboult kicked 0.5 or whatever it was, but hey, that's 5 shots on goal from a KPF in his 6th or 7th game. Is taking great marks and though I doubt he'll ever be a great kick, I would expect enough improvement that he'll nail more than he misses. Best mark in the side already.

- Bell made some shocking decisions but a few of those were not his fault. Was a lack of options for him to go to. The only one that was a real howler was his indecision and consequent tackle and free kick against in defensive 50. But boy, the kid is a gun at the clearances and will be invaluable as he gains more experience.

It was one of those days where nothing went right. This might sound 'out there' but our intensity was WAY off and I reckon every one of us that expected an easy win and were thinking about percentage can take some of the blame. That energy spreads throughout society, the media and obviously the club.

It's a loss that I believe will hold us in good stead. A lesson that we'll never forget.
Mostly a quality post but sorry, I ain't copping blame for expecting a win. Ridiculous suggestion.

Rounds 7-12 we played 6 games in 31 days, and lost 5 of them, with 2 interstate games, totally took all the momentum out of our season.

That lack of recovery time eventually took its toll, and I am certain played a part in our demise.

The players have let down the supporters, the club and Brett Ratten.
They are the reason Ratten is going to get sacked. How can we be so accurate one week and then be so bad the next.
Its all well and good for players to come out in the media and say that they back Ratts 100% but if you need to back that up with good performances
I feel bad for Ratten but I think his time is up.

You're not alone. I'm guessing the review is on in earnest now. Last night makes it hard to mask any problems we have. It might be the catalyst for necessary change, playing, coaching or administrative.

They were saying on MMM that we have too many board members. Something like 11 people. That has to change

Yeah they were already going to change that. We pretty much sold spots on the board when we were broke. Fundraising and personal donations was a big part of it.

Did I read somewhere recently that Sticks made mention of the current board size and indicated it would be reduced, butby natural attrition as opposed to direct changes ?

That's good.

In hindsight I guess we can see this loss as a blessing in disguise. Just have to wait and see how we react next year..

Yes, can't remember how they intended to reduce it but it was on the agenda.

Why does Gibbs cop the wrath and the soft call after he played hard footy in the middle last week?

Look at the missed tackles by Duigan and Garlett on Lynch and May that didn't stop them getting it forward for a goal. Or Murphy's missed tackle on Ablett...

Bashing Gibbs is almost as bad as blaming Judd whilst pumping up Murphy for leadership. It was Judd who stepped up again and hit the scoreboard when we needed a boost. Marc shouldn't have been in the best players. I guess the writers just look at Murphy's possessions count and his name before giving their best players.

Looking forward to Gieschen's explanations of these umpiring decisions...

Interesting the first link is the terrible effort by gibbs to not get the ball out of bounds, goes to ground and then barely puts pressure on the kick at goal. So that undoes all your defense on gibbs in your argument.

And the second link wasnt an issue, kreuzer didnt mark it when he should have.

Is Thornton injured?, didn't even play VFL yesterday and wasn't an emergancy

Take your pick. Apparently it's already been decided he's delisted at the end of the season, or Thornton has already decided he's leaving.

What a difference 24 hours makes. Freo made last night's result irrelevant.

Is Ratts still sacked?
I see the humour in this but in seriousness what freo did today is irrelevent. It is what Carlton did last night that may factor in that decision.

This thread has been hilarious.

So much chicken little going on in here.

Thanks for the read.
And you're oblivious to the emotion of supporting an AFL club how...?

I hope that in no way that the players or Club let Freo's result take any responsibilty away from the dismal performance last night.

In a lot of ways I think the loss to The Suns will actually be quite positive as it has exposed our deficiencies in the most illuminating fashion and hopefully it is now clear to everyone that there is MUCH work to do before we become the force we all want the team to be.

Their is a simple answer. unfortunately the coach must go. why because it is his job to motivate his players to play at a certain level every week. especially in a week that had so much on the line. he didnt. with a new coach will hopefully come new coaching staff. john barker hasnt been reappointed in any of his previous clubs and should not at this one. Players will also be moved on. I.E a change in coach means a change in club. Change is whats needed.

Like your humility in coming over to this forum to gloat?
West Coast and Hawks supporters, probably the worst gloaters in the AFL. Bombers would be, but they're just too far down right now.;)

I dont see where you got any gloating from in my post. The ratten speak is quite topical and im just giving my opinion on another supporters comments

And the second link wasnt an issue, kreuzer didnt mark it when he should have.
The problem with this is Kreuzer's arm was pulled down by the Suns player, which ultimately prevented him from completing the mark. An obvious free kick. In fact a lot more obvious than some of the alleged arm chop free kicks paid by some umpires.

SO.. I have been away skiing for 3 days with no internet/TV. SO can someone please explain to me WHAT THE **** HAPPENED??!!
Neil Armstrong died.
