I'd love to see the stuff they edited out. Surely there's some f-bombs in there and some trash talk.

That is excellent. Surprised they got it in a real game. Great to hear the comments about it too, especially Bucks endorsing it as the closest he's been to the action since his playing days. Good on the club for finally doing something right by the fans in the media space!

Guess we can put a line through Sydney ever having a crack at Clayton Oliver

That's a bad look for Beatson. Clarry definitely having the last laugh.

Doesn't Oliver actually say that Beatson was just trying to be tough to see if he had the mental toughness to stand up to those sorts of questions? It doesn't suggest Beatson actually thought most of that stuff.

I'd agree this is likely the angle he was going for but it reads like beatson was bullying him essentially

I'm sure a lot of similar conversations happen that if released without context come off pretty horribly for a lot of people associated with footy. Whether that's an argument for or against them is another discussion, but I suspect it's a bit of the 'knowing how the sausage is made'.

That is shocking from Beatson. He's gotta be better than that
I reckon Beetson has been in a few interviews, met a few thousand people surrounding players like teachers, coaches, etc. He would form a view of a player.
I reckon players at school level where these draftees come from are mostly high achievers and not necessarily hard workers, They have thrived on talent alone.
Beetson is probably trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Saying things and seeing what the response will be.
17-18 is early days for forming an opinion on what that person will be in a few years.
You ask any teenager what they did that day and the typical response is something like "not much".
I think Beetson was just trying to scratch the surface to find out something he didn't already know, or confirm what he already knew.
These kids are not finished products at these reviews. It would be difficult to know 100% what you want to know to draft a kid at this age.
Shake em up questions at the interview and the corresponding answers may help you confirm some doubts or confirm them as viable draftees.
Teenagers can be difficult to work out especially at the top level deciding between a bunch of high achievers.

I don't overly care , but if the story said Graeme Wright said that to Clayton Oliver people here would lose their shit

None of the above justifies calling a kid fat.

Bloody hell. Not the best read
Not for either. Oliver admits he dodged the combine because he wasn't fit enough. His response to Beatson, in his own words, was to cry and walk out.
To get taken at pick 4 after this means he must have really picked himself up so maybe Beatson did him a favour, if in a rather unpleasant way.

You are going to spend a first rounder on a kid.
I reckon you are entitled to say that. The future of your club relies on it.

what if it's an AFLW player still ok ?

No, you're not.

You're entitled to ask questions to get the information you want without bullying a kid.

If I want to know why someone might be overweight, I'd ask them about their physical routine, their diet, how they would rate their commitment to their sport, etc.

There's many different ways you could get to the bottom of it. If Beatson as a grown man doesn't have the nous to phrase such questions then it doesn't reflect well on him.

The difference being that Oliver was a 17 year old kid, Beatson a grown man who should know better.

As for Oliver becoming a star, the credit there goes to Oliver who turned himself and his prospects around, not Beatson, who could just as easily have sent Oliver in the other direction if he weren't as strong mentally.

Agree but also were only hearing one side if the story here that was aired on a podcast. Clayton could have easily been paraphrasing and it may have come out in the wrong manner than intended also. He may not have meant to paint such a poor picture of beatson but did so unintentionally.

Probably in say 20 years. Yes. But not at the moment because the level of professionalism in AFLW is not the same as AFL atm.
This is a multi million dollar industry where careers, money, sponsorships, premierships etc are at stake.
Asking him Mickey Milkshake type questions does not cut it. Beetson was obviously interested in him. He knew he had a hold on about 70% of Clayton. He wanted to know whether it was worth drafting him to develop the other 30%.

Maybe some of the reason why he became a star is because he got a reality check and changed his ways. There are pivotable moments in peoples lives and this was obviously one in Clayton's. The truth hurts sometimes. But sometimes that is what you need to hear.

Maybe he should have asked Oliver where he sees himself in 5 years, or what he thinks his biggest weakness is. PMSL. It's a cuthroat industry. As I said above, it's people not liking how the sausage is made, but happy to eat it if they get to turn a blind eye. We all want these players to be at the peak of their fitness and ability but then don't like the methods that are used to get them there.
