I'd love to see the stuff they edited out. Surely there's some f-bombs in there and some trash talk.

That's a bad look for Beatson. Clarry definitely having the last laugh.Guess we can put a line through Sydney ever having a crack at Clayton Oliver

Disagree, seemed like a real wake up call for ClarryThat's a bad look for Beatson. Clarry definitely having the last laugh.

I'd agree this is likely the angle he was going for but it reads like beatson was bullying him essentiallyDoesn't Oliver actually say that Beatson was just trying to be tough to see if he had the mental toughness to stand up to those sorts of questions? It doesn't suggest Beatson actually thought most of that stuff.

That is shocking from Beatson. He's gotta be better than thatGuess we can put a line through Sydney ever having a crack at Clayton Oliver

I reckon Beetson has been in a few interviews, met a few thousand people surrounding players like teachers, coaches, etc. He would form a view of a player. That is shocking from Beatson. He's gotta be better than that
None of the above justifies calling a kid fat.I reckon Beetson has been in a few interviews, met a few thousand people surrounding players like teachers, coaches, etc. He would form a view of a player.
I reckon players at school level where these draftees come from are mostly high achievers and not necessarily hard workers, They have thrived on talent alone.
Beetson is probably trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Saying things and seeing what the response will be.
17-18 is early days for forming an opinion on what that person will be in a few years.
You ask any teenager what they did that day and the typical response is something like "not much".
I think Beetson was just trying to scratch the surface to find out something he didn't already know, or confirm what he already knew.
These kids are not finished products at these reviews. It would be difficult to know 100% what you want to know to draft a kid at this age.
Shake em up questions at the interview and the corresponding answers may help you confirm some doubts or confirm them as viable draftees.
Teenagers can be difficult to work out especially at the top level deciding between a bunch of high achievers.
Not for either. Oliver admits he dodged the combine because he wasn't fit enough. His response to Beatson, in his own words, was to cry and walk out.Bloody hell. Not the best read
You are going to spend a first rounder on a kid.None of the above justifies calling a kid fat.
You are going to spend a first rounder on a kid.
I reckon you are entitled to say that. The future of your club relies on it.
No, you're not.You are going to spend a first rounder on a kid.
I reckon you are entitled to say that. The future of your club relies on it.
The difference being that Oliver was a 17 year old kid, Beatson a grown man who should know better. Not for either. Oliver admits he dodged the combine because he wasn't fit enough. His response to Beatson, in his own words, was to cry and walk out.
To get taken at pick 4 after this means he must have really picked himself up so maybe Beatson did him a favour, if in a rather unpleasant way.
Agree but also were only hearing one side if the story here that was aired on a podcast. Clayton could have easily been paraphrasing and it may have come out in the wrong manner than intended also. He may not have meant to paint such a poor picture of beatson but did so unintentionally. No, you're not.
You're entitled to ask questions to get the information you want without bullying a kid.
If I want to know why someone might be overweight, I'd ask them about their physical routine, their diet, how they would rate their commitment to their sport, etc.
There's many different ways you could get to the bottom of it. If Beatson as a grown man doesn't have the nous to phrase such questions then it doesn't reflect well on him.
Probably in say 20 years. Yes. But not at the moment because the level of professionalism in AFLW is not the same as AFL atm.what if it's an AFLW player still ok ?
Maybe some of the reason why he became a star is because he got a reality check and changed his ways. There are pivotable moments in peoples lives and this was obviously one in Clayton's. The truth hurts sometimes. But sometimes that is what you need to hear. The difference being that Oliver was a 17 year old kid, Beatson a grown man who should know better.
As for Oliver becoming a star, the credit there goes to Oliver who turned himself and his prospects around, not Beatson, who could just as easily have sent Oliver in the other direction if he weren't as strong mentally.
