You may or maynot have noticed that i didn't highlight O'Donnell.

My question was related to Voss and Hird.

Sorry didn't realise that, my bad

How many out and out champions have been good coaches?

Of the top of my head, Matthews, Blight, Barassi, Roos and Williams not too bad a player, worsfold will be in team of century at wce, fair few flags between them one would think. Stan Alves also good coach who came real close

Sometimes staying at the one club allows you to continue with bad habits unchallenged?

Agreed there, there is always 2 ways of looking at things, thats what makes these discussion threads so good, as an essendon supporter is your glass half full or half empty? mine is half full.:D

umm, we were talking about "out and out champions"

That rules out Roos, who is Williams, surely you don't mean the port coach, Worsfold and Alves.

That leaves Mathews, i agree, Blight, debatable, but i will give you that one and Barassi really never proved that he was a good coach and was from a far less competitive era, and had premierships with clubs that bought them.

My glass is sick and tired of hearing BS being fed to our supporters.
My glass is sick and tired of us overrating our personel, both on and off the field
My glass is sick and tired of our coach molly coddling our players and issuing them with idle threats that are not followed through.
My glass is half empty

Roos played 360 odd games and won countless b & F awards.

Barassi won flags at Carlton, North Melbourne and I think Melbourne.

Williams won few B & F's at both Collingwood and Brisbane

Worsfold would surely have won B & F's and was AA several times

Alves won fair few B & F's and was runner up in a brownlow when missed 7-8 games in the 70's.

Whilst they are not that recent it is hard to find recent stars who have coached with success

2006 - Worsfold
2005 - Roos
2004 - Williams
2003 - Matthews
2002 - Matthews
2001 - Matthews
2000 - Sheedy
1999 - Pagan
1998 - Blight
1997 - Blight
1996 - Pagan
1995 - Parkin
1994 - malthouse
1993 - Sheedy
1992 - Malthouse
1991 - Jeans/Joyce?
1990 - matthews

8 out of the last 10 premiership coaches have all been stars/really good players

I understand how your glass feels but thats what the spin doctors are paid for. If essendon came straight out and said that we are no good, looks like 5-6 years until we develop all youngsters and that we have f*cked up in drafts when we last won a flag some supporters would jump off until we were successful, this would put the club at precarious levels like we now see with kangaroos and others who struggle to improve on memberships.

Now that wallet has said that richmond are no good until X their membership will drop until wins are on the board

Mate you are changing what the discussion was about

You originally stated "out and out champions" which i replied to
Now you watered it down to "stars/really good players"

Barassi never won a flag with Melbourne and he bought them at carlton and Nth

Did you ever see M.Williams play?

If you want to discuss an issue, thats fine, but stick to what we are discussing, not change it each time i reply

Even some of the runners up coaches are fairly good players

daniher may well be the go

like his passion & i reckon a few of the lads may have forgotten what its like to get a full on blast, may just be whats required

If Sheedy was to go, Daniher would be the man I'd back for the job. He fits our mould well in my opinion.

Then again, I'm behind Sheedy to coach us in 2008.

You can keep Wallet to yourselves. Dont need to replace one spin doctor with another :D

IF we replace Sheeds at the end of the current season (and I'm one who believes we should) it certainly won't be for a vain, B.S. artist like Terry Wallace, who's 5 year plan has been pushed back how many years ?

From what i've seen of Wallace this year I actually respect his ability as a coach, They have been hit bad with losses of key personel mainly in their ruck department, their start showed they were no chance at the 8. He then went out and decided he would fine tune his 5 year plan by culling out respected club champions like Gaspar and playing these kids who will benifit greatly from the early exposure and he's not asking them to win every or any game just to get out their, play til they HURT, and earn respect for what they do.

If any of you have watched Richmond play since then you would see the quality of some of the youngsters they have coming through not just Deledio and Tambling but guys like Howat, Raines, Pattison and Hughes.
