Seems following the election, Tasmanian Labour will agree to a stadium but not at Macquarie Point - which the AFL insists is not negotiable for a Tasmanian team

Labor should adjust its position on a new Hobart stadium for the fledgling Tasmania Devils Football Club, according to party stalwarts and key unions.

But it is unlikely the party will fully pivot towards the planned build at Macquarie Point, which is part of the signed contract between the state and the AFL

Good to see that they're recognising that the whole "health and housing over stadium" rhetoric is against the party's values.

I'm friends with a senior figure within the party, and he's been pushing them to support Mac Point 2.0, but unfortunately White wouldn't budge.

Bec tried to play both sides of the argument thinking sitting in the middle would give them the best chance of retaining and gaining votes.

This ill thought-out strategy ended up alienating both sides.

It would be nice if Labor, under new leadership just came out and said “that this stadium is going to built anyway, so we will support it to stop the Libs making poor deals with the minor parties to get it over the line”

At the very least it cost them a seat in Franklin, as O'Byrne was elected by traditional Labor voters who had been pushed away by the lack of support for the stadium/team.

You could also make an argument that they could have stolen a seat from the Libs in both Clark and Lyons with support for the stadium.

I doubt it would have affected them negatively in the northern seats as the Libs were well ahead and they already support the stadium.

I think what we'll see (especially if Winter gets the leadership) is Labor pushing hard for either Mac Point 2.0 or an alternative stadium somewhere like Elwick Racecourse.

They will attack the government hard on the cost and management of the Mac Point build, but still vote it through in Parliament, as they won't want to be responsible for killing the team.

[edit] wilkie has questions to answer here .... his attack (made under parliamentary privilege) was a gutless and shameful misrepresentation of a player welfare program that has been around for 20+ years ........ and its based on a story fed to him by a player who is subject to a 4-year ban for illicit drug use ...... supported by the father of said ex-player who is pursuing an un-related compensatory claim against the afl for health reasons

He doesn't care about footy. He's from Sydney ffs. The whole thing was just about trying to discredit the AFL to sway public opinion against the stadium.

Here is the moron from Sydney who is trying to bring down the AFL and the Hobart stadiums email address if people wanna tell him what they think of him. The word gets back to the member if there are multiple emails.

andrew.wilkie.mp@aph.gov.au

* edit: I just sent him an email to him.

Entire wilkie attack is aimed at the Mac Stadium funding because they wont give him a football (soccer) stadium hes been asking for, since the election hasnt gone in the direction that he hoped for

Economic impact stats regarding sports and stadiums are always a bit rubbery, but anyone with a bit of common sense would clearly see that there will be an increase of travelling tourists, in winter (when less tourists go in general), because of AFL support, in a way that a soccer stadium can't. That brings money from outside Tasmania into it. In a way that a soccer stadium won't, because there is nothing that can be played on a soccer field in Hobart that will consistently get tens of thousands of tourists each year every year like away AFL supporters will.

Surely it's the job of a politician, irrespective of their personal beliefs and interests, and ideology, to understand that?

This is where Wilkie’s sharp-eyed political adviser, Rohan Wenn, an investigative journalist and former chief of staff to Nick Xenophon, stepped in. About six months ago, Wenn separately approached Arain and Bartlett to find out what story they had to tell. It took both men many months of convincing to agree to tell Wilkie their stories. Arain now regrets his part in it. Bartlett declined to comment. Pert did not return calls from this masthead.

You could never know why Wilkie and his chief of staff would be so worried about a legal matter involving the afl lol

The more we read on this topic the more anyone with any sense can see that Wilkie and co have woefully misinterpreted the interactions of the AFL Anti Doping Code and Sports Integrity Australias powers. it literally looks like he confused the two.

But thats a subject for another forum,

Wilkie is just desperate for something to show he is effective given his pig stunt with Katter failed so badly.

Weird that Labor went anti stadium as a way to win the election. Surely they knew it was a loud minority of people. If they went pro stadium would they have won

problem with loud minorities is people buy into it BECAUSE they are loud. By the time the dust settles its too late.

See also the News Cycle.

I was saying it was a loud minority before the launch of the club etc, and a few people going "yeh but how do you know its not actually the supporters that are the loud minority?!"

FFS, blind Freddy could see it.

All they needed to say really was thay they supported the Team, and given the current government put them in a position where they have to honor a contract - that they intended to hold stadium expenditure to great scrutiny and to as low a cost to the taxpayer as possible.

These people are so bitter that the afl is the biggest sport in the country, it's a disgrace.

Another reason for Wilkie's afl hatred, his ex wife Simone is an AFL commissioner.

View attachment 1945648A Tasmanian team will only ever be a small club never be competitive in a national competition 😂
Hopefully the joy and excitement of the Jackjumpers victory, will show the AFL Commission and Tassie politicians that an AFL Tasmanian team must occur - otherwise, this Australian Rules heartland will suffer an inevitable slow decline to other codes
